Learn How To Set Up Your GoFundMe Account

Understanding GoFundMe: What It Is and How It Works

GoFundMe is an online fundraising platform where people create campaigns to raise money for personal causes, medical expenses, education, business ventures, community projects, and emergencies. Founded in 2010, the platform has facilitated over $2 billion in donations across millions of campaigns worldwide. Unlike traditional loans or government assistance programs, GoFundMe operates as a peer-to-peer giving platform where individuals donate voluntarily to causes they choose to support.

The platform functions as a middleman that connects people who need funds with potential donors. When you create a campaign, you tell your story through a campaign page that includes text, photos, and videos. People who read your campaign can then choose to donate money directly to you. GoFundMe processes these donations and transfers the funds to your bank account. The platform charges processing fees on each donation, typically around 2.2% plus payment processing fees, but these costs are paid by donors if they choose—you can set your fundraising goal without worrying about platform fees reducing what you receive.

GoFundMe operates in over 19 countries and supports fundraising for various needs: medical bills, funeral expenses, educational costs, small business startup funds, travel expenses, home repairs, pet medical care, disaster relief, and community initiatives. The platform is not a government program, does not provide matching funds or grants, and does not determine who receives money. Instead, it provides the infrastructure for donors to find causes and contribute voluntarily.

Practical takeaway: Before setting up your account, understand that GoFundMe is a donation-based platform. Your success depends on how effectively you communicate your story and reach potential donors, not on meeting specific criteria set by the platform.

Step-by-Step Account Creation Process

Creating a GoFundMe account involves several straightforward steps. First, visit the GoFundMe website or download the mobile app available for iOS and Android devices. You'll see an option to start a fundraiser or sign in if you already have an account. Click "Start a GoFundMe" to begin the registration process.

GoFundMe allows you to create an account using several methods: your email address, Facebook account, Google account, or Apple ID. Choose whichever method you prefer. If using your email, enter a valid email address you check regularly, then create a secure password. Your password should be at least eight characters long and include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. If you use social media login options, GoFundMe will access basic information from your social profile to help populate your account details.

After choosing your login method, you'll provide basic personal information including your first and last name, phone number, and address. This information is necessary for fund transfers and compliance purposes. GoFundMe verifies your identity before processing withdrawals, so providing accurate details is important. You can choose to make some profile information public or keep it private—your preference depends on how comfortable you are with people knowing personal details.

Once your account is created, you can immediately start building your campaign, but you won't receive funds until you verify your identity and add a payment method. This verification typically takes a few minutes to complete. The platform uses this information to comply with financial regulations and prevent fraud.

Practical takeaway: Use a password manager to create and store a strong, unique password for your GoFundMe account. This protects your account from unauthorized access and ensures you can retrieve your password if needed.

Verifying Your Identity and Setting Up Payment Methods

GoFundMe requires identity verification before transferring any funds to your bank account. This is a standard practice for financial platforms and helps prevent fraud and money laundering. The verification process typically involves confirming personal information, a phone number, and your address. You may be asked to provide additional documentation such as a government-issued ID or passport photo.

To verify your identity, GoFundMe may request information like your Social Security number (the last four digits), date of birth, or answers to security questions. The platform uses secure encryption to protect this sensitive information. For some users, the verification is immediate, while others may require additional review that takes 24 to 48 hours. This delay is not unusual and does not indicate a problem with your account.

After identity verification, you need to add a payment method to receive your funds. GoFundMe transfers money to your bank account using the information you provide. You'll need your bank account number, routing number, and the name on the account. Most U.S. banks provide this information on checks or through online banking portals. If you use a payment service like PayPal, Square Cash, or another financial app, you can sometimes use those accounts as well, though direct bank transfers are most common.

The platform may request additional documentation if your campaign raises funds quickly or if the campaign involves certain categories like medical treatments, disaster relief, or charities. This additional verification protects both donors and fundraisers. You can upload documents directly through your account dashboard. Keep copies of any documents you submit and note the dates for your records.

Practical takeaway: Verify your identity and add your payment method before promoting your campaign. This ensures no delays in receiving donations and prevents potential holds on your funds while verification processes complete.

Creating Your Campaign Page: Structure and Best Practices

After your account is set up, you'll create your individual campaign page. This is where you tell potential donors your story and explain why you need funds. The campaign creation process guides you through several sections: choosing a fundraising category, setting your fundraising goal, creating a headline, writing a detailed description, and adding photos or videos.

Start by selecting the appropriate category for your campaign. Categories include Medical, Memorial, Education, Nonprofit, Community, Business, Travel, Personal, Pets, and Emergencies. Choosing the correct category helps the right donors find your campaign. When setting your fundraising goal, be realistic. Research similar campaigns or calculate your actual expenses carefully. A goal of $5,000 for a specific medical procedure is more convincing than a vague goal of $10,000 for "health expenses."

Your headline should be clear and specific. Instead of "Help Me," try "Help Sarah Pay for Knee Surgery Recovery" or "Community Garden Project in Downtown Lincoln." Strong headlines grab attention and quickly convey what your campaign is about. Your description should tell your complete story: what you need, why you need it, and how funds will be used. Share relevant details—names, dates, specific challenges, and personal touches make your story relatable. A description that's 500 to 800 words typically performs better than very brief descriptions, as it gives donors sufficient context to make giving decisions.

Photos and videos significantly impact campaign performance. Include clear images that relate to your cause: family photos for personal campaigns, documentation of need (like home damage), or images of the project or community being supported. Videos don't need to be professionally produced—authentic, personal videos where you explain your situation often perform better than highly polished content. Videos should be two to three minutes long and focus on your story rather than technical quality.

Practical takeaway: Write your campaign description as if explaining your situation to a caring friend—be honest, specific, and personal. Avoid exaggeration or emotional manipulation, as donors respond to authentic stories backed by concrete details.

Promoting Your Campaign and Reaching Potential Donors

Creating a campaign page is just the beginning. Most campaign success depends on actively promoting your fundraiser to reach potential donors. GoFundMe itself does not promote campaigns or guarantee visibility. You are responsible for sharing your campaign with your networks and communities that might support your cause.

Start by sharing your campaign link directly with people you know: family members, friends, coworkers, and members of groups you belong to (churches, schools, clubs, professional organizations). Personal networks typically account for 60 to 80 percent of funds raised on GoFundMe. Send personalized messages to people explaining your situation, rather than generic mass messages. A text to your aunt that says "I'm fundraising for medical expenses and would greatly appreciate your support" is more effective than posting a link with no context.

Share your campaign on social media platforms where you have accounts: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and others. Each platform serves different audiences, so customize your message. On Facebook, you might share longer stories and photos. On Twitter or Instagram, use compelling short descriptions and hashtags related to your cause. On TikTok or YouTube, consider creating short videos explaining your fundraiser. Include your campaign link in the bio section of social media accounts and in comments when relevant.
