Learn How to Send Text Messages on iPhone

Understanding iPhone Text Messaging Basics

Text messaging on an iPhone uses the Messages app, which comes built into every iPhone model. This app allows you to send Short Message Service (SMS) texts to other phone users, as well as iMessages to other Apple device users. Understanding the difference between these two types of messages is important because they function differently and have different features.

SMS text messages are the traditional form of texting that work on any phone with a cellular plan, regardless of whether it's an iPhone, Android device, or older phone. These messages are limited to 160 characters and are sent through your cellular network. When you send an SMS message, your carrier processes it, and you may be charged according to your phone plan's text messaging allowance.

iMessages, on the other hand, are Apple's proprietary messaging system that works only between Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. iMessages use your internet connection rather than your cellular network, which means they can include photos, videos, and longer text without the 160-character limit. iMessages appear in blue bubbles in your conversation threads, while SMS messages appear in green bubbles. This visual distinction helps you know which type of message you're sending.

The Messages app automatically determines which type of message to send based on the recipient's device. If you're messaging another iPhone user, it will attempt to send an iMessage first. If that fails or if you're messaging a non-Apple device, it will fall back to sending an SMS text message instead. This automatic switching means you don't need to manually choose which messaging type to use in most situations.

Practical takeaway: Familiarize yourself with the Messages app icon on your home screen—it looks like a speech bubble. Knowing the difference between blue iMessages and green SMS texts helps you understand how your messages are being delivered and whether they require an internet connection.

Accessing and Opening the Messages App

To send text messages on your iPhone, you first need to locate and open the Messages app. On most iPhones, this app is located on the home screen and appears as a green icon with a white speech bubble. If you cannot find it on your main home screen, you can swipe down from the top of the screen or swipe left on your home screen to access the search function, then type "Messages" to locate it quickly.

Once you tap the Messages app, it will open to show your message threads—these are conversations with individual people or groups. At the top of the screen, you'll see a "Compose" button that looks like a pencil and paper icon. This button is located in the upper right corner of the Messages screen. Tapping this button starts the process of creating a new text message.

If you already have an ongoing conversation with someone, you can simply tap on their name in your messages list to open that conversation thread and continue messaging. The conversation view shows your previous messages with that person in chronological order, with the oldest messages at the top and your most recent messages at the bottom. This makes it easy to follow the flow of your conversation.

The bottom of the Messages screen contains the text input area. This is where you type your message and where you'll find additional options like attaching photos, sending audio messages, or using special effects. Understanding this layout helps you navigate the app efficiently and find the features you need without confusion.

Each conversation thread displays important information about your contact. At the top of the thread, you'll see the person's name or phone number. Below that, you might see information about when they were last active or their online status, though this depends on your settings and whether the other person has shared this information.

Practical takeaway: Spend a few minutes exploring the Messages app to get comfortable with its layout. Open a conversation with someone you know and examine the different parts of the screen so you understand where to tap to reply, compose new messages, or access additional features.

Composing and Sending Your First Text Message

To compose a new text message, tap the Compose button (pencil and paper icon) in the upper right corner of the Messages app. This opens a new message composition screen where you can enter recipient information and type your message.

The first field you'll see is labeled "To:" with a search box below it. This is where you enter the phone number or name of the person you want to message. You can type a phone number directly, or you can type the person's name if they're saved in your Contacts. As you type, the iPhone will suggest matching contacts from your address book. Tap on the suggested contact to add them as the recipient. You can add multiple recipients by tapping the plus sign or by continuing to type additional names or numbers separated by commas.

Once you've selected your recipient or recipients, you move to the main message composition area. This is the larger text field at the bottom of the screen where you type your actual message. Simply tap in this field and begin typing. Your iPhone's keyboard will appear at the bottom of the screen. You can type your message using standard keyboard functions—the letters, numbers, and punctuation marks work just like on any other device.

As you type, you'll notice that the predictive text feature may suggest words that complete what you're typing. You can tap these suggestions to accept them and speed up your typing. If the suggestion isn't what you want, simply continue typing to dismiss it and enter your own text.

Once you've finished typing your message, you send it by tapping the Send button. This button appears on the right side of the message composition area and looks like an arrow pointing upward or to the right, depending on your iPhone model. Tap this button, and your message will be sent immediately to the recipient.

After you send a message, it appears in the conversation thread with a timestamp showing when it was sent. If you're sending an iMessage to another Apple device user, the message will appear in a blue bubble. If you're sending an SMS text message, it will appear in a green bubble. The recipient's responses will appear below your messages in the same conversation thread.

Practical takeaway: Practice sending a test message to a friend or family member to become comfortable with the composition process. Start with a simple message to get the feel for typing, selecting recipients, and sending before attempting more complex messages with photos or formatting.

Working with Conversation Threads and Message Organization

After you send your first text message, it begins a conversation thread with that contact. A conversation thread is the ongoing record of all messages you've exchanged with a particular person or group. Every time that person replies to your message, their response appears in the same thread, making it easy to follow the entire conversation history without searching through multiple separate messages.

When you return to the main Messages screen, you'll see your conversation threads listed in order, with the most recently active conversations appearing at the top. Each thread shows the contact's name, a preview of the last message exchanged, and the time of that last message. This makes it easy to see at a glance which conversations are ongoing and which may need your attention.

If you want to find an older conversation thread, you can scroll through your message list to locate it. The iPhone keeps all your message threads unless you manually delete them. You can also use the search function at the top of the Messages screen to search for specific conversations by typing a contact's name or keywords from messages within that conversation.

To delete a conversation thread, you can swipe left on the conversation in your messages list and tap the delete button (usually a trash can icon). Be aware that deleting a conversation thread removes all the messages within it, so only do this if you're certain you don't need to reference those messages again. The iPhone does provide an "Edit" mode that allows you to select multiple conversations and delete them all at once if needed.

Within an active conversation thread, you can see all the messages you've exchanged with that person. Messages you sent appear on the right side of the screen, typically in blue (for iMessages) or green (for SMS). Messages the other person sent appear on the left side in gray. This layout makes it clear who said what in the conversation, even if you're reviewing messages from weeks or months earlier.

You can scroll up within a conversation thread to view older messages. This is helpful if you need to remember something discussed earlier in the conversation or if you need to find specific information that was shared through text. The iPhone stores message history indefinitely unless you manually delete conversations or adjust your message retention settings in the Settings app.

Practical takeaway: Keep your most important conversation threads easily accessible by pinning them to the top of your Messages list. To do this, swipe left on a conversation and
