Learn How to Send Money to Inmate Accounts

Understanding Inmate Account Systems and How They Work

Most correctional facilities in the United States operate inmate account systems that allow family members and friends to send money to people in custody. These accounts function like simplified bank accounts within the prison or jail system. When you send money to an inmate's account, the funds are deposited into their personal account number, which they can use to purchase items from the commissary, pay for phone calls, and cover other approved expenses within the facility.

The inmate account system exists because most facilities do not allow cash to be brought into the prison. Instead, money must be sent through official channels. Each inmate receives a unique account number, typically assigned when they arrive at the facility. This number serves as their identifier within the system and appears on their paperwork and any information you receive from the facility.

Different types of facilities operate different systems. State prisons, federal prisons, county jails, and private correctional facilities may all have separate procedures for receiving money. The Federal Bureau of Prisons uses one system, while state prison systems each manage their own. County jails often use different vendors than state systems. This means the process for sending money to someone in a federal facility differs from sending money to someone in a county jail.

The commissary is the primary place where inmates use their account funds. Items available typically include snacks, hygiene products, writing supplies, and clothing. Phone call time is another major expense. A fifteen-minute phone call might cost $3 to $5 depending on the facility and whether the call is local or long-distance. Some facilities also charge fees for video visitation, legal copying services, or other programs.

Understanding how these systems work helps you send money efficiently and avoid common mistakes. Take time to learn which specific facility holds the person you want to support and what system that facility uses before attempting to send funds.

Finding the Correct Facility and Account Information

Before you can send money to an inmate, you must locate the correct facility and obtain their account number. This step is crucial because sending money to the wrong facility or using an incorrect account number can cause serious delays. The inmate may not receive the funds for weeks, and you may have difficulty retrieving the money if it goes to the wrong place.

The first place to look for facility information is the correctional system's official website. For federal inmates, visit the Federal Bureau of Prisons website at bop.gov. This site has a searchable database where you can enter an inmate's name and find their current location, release date, and other basic information. For state inmates, visit your state's department of corrections website. You can search for "North Carolina Department of Corrections inmate search" or use whatever state applies to find the official government portal.

County jail websites often have inmate search functions as well, though they vary significantly in quality and accessibility. Some counties provide detailed online systems while others require you to call. Start by searching the county name plus "inmate search" or "jail inmate lookup." When contacting jails by phone, have the inmate's full name and date of birth ready.

Once you locate the facility, look for specific information about their money transfer system. This information should be posted on the facility's website or visiting information page. Look for these details:

• The name of the money transfer company they use (Common companies include JPay, Securus, Global Tel Link, and others)
• The inmate's account number
• Instructions for online or phone transfers
• Any fees associated with transfers
• How long transfers typically take to appear in the account
• Maximum amounts you can send at one time

If the facility website doesn't clearly list this information, call the facility directly. Ask for the inmate services department or commissary office. Staff there can confirm the account number and explain the money transfer process. Keep notes of what facility staff tell you, including the date and time you called and the name of the person who helped you.

Practical takeaway: Write down the facility name, inmate account number, the name of the money transfer company, and the facility's phone number in a safe location you can reference whenever you send money.

The Major Money Transfer Companies and Their Processes

Several national companies operate the inmate money transfer systems used by most facilities. Understanding how each company works helps you choose the fastest and most economical option. The largest providers include JPay, Securus, Global Tel Link (GTL), and others. Each company has slightly different procedures, fees, and technology.

JPay operates in facilities across numerous states and the federal system. JPay offers online transfers through their website and mobile app, phone transfers by calling their customer service line, and in-person payments at retail locations. Online transfers through JPay typically cost between $1.95 and $2.95 depending on the amount sent. Phone transfers may cost slightly more. Transfers sent online usually appear in the inmate's account within one to two hours, though this varies by facility.

Securus operates in facilities nationwide and also offers multiple payment methods. You can send money through their website, mobile app, or by calling their customer service line. Securus charges between $1.95 and $2.95 per transfer. The company also partners with various retail locations where you can pay in cash if you do not have a debit or credit card. Transfers sent online may appear in accounts within hours at some facilities or may take one to two business days at others.

Global Tel Link (GTL) provides services in some states and facilities. GTL's process is similar to the other major companies, with online, phone, and retail payment options. Fees typically range from $1.95 to $2.95. Processing times vary by facility.

Each company's website allows you to create an account where you can set up the inmate's information and make future transfers more quickly. Most systems let you save payment information, making repeat transfers faster. Some systems allow you to set up automatic recurring deposits if you plan to send money regularly.

When using any of these services, have the following information ready: the inmate's full name, date of birth, facility name, and account number. Double-check all information before confirming any transfer. A small mistake in the account number could cause the money to go to the wrong person.

Practical takeaway: Visit the website of the money transfer company used by your inmate's facility and create an account before your first transfer. This allows you to understand their interface and save time for future transfers.

Payment Methods and Understanding Transfer Fees

When sending money to an inmate account, you have several payment options. The most common methods are debit cards, credit cards, bank transfers, and cash payments at retail locations. Understanding these options and their associated fees helps you choose the most economical approach for your situation.

Online payment using debit or credit cards is the fastest method available. When you use a debit or credit card through JPay, Securus, or another provider's website or app, the transfer typically processes within hours. These transfers usually cost $1.95 to $2.95 per transaction, regardless of the amount sent. This makes online transfers economical even for small amounts. The main limitation is that you need a debit or credit card with available funds.

Phone payments allow you to speak with a representative while making your transfer. You call the company's customer service number and provide payment information verbally. This method is helpful if you have questions during the transfer or prefer human interaction. Phone transfers typically cost the same as online transfers, around $1.95 to $2.95. Processing time may be slightly longer than online transfers.

Cash payments at retail locations provide an option for people who do not have access to debit or credit cards. Many money transfer companies partner with convenience stores, supermarkets, and other retail locations where you can pay cash to load funds into an inmate's account. You visit the retail location, provide the inmate's information, pay the amount you wish to send, and the retailer processes the transfer. Fees for retail payments may be slightly higher, sometimes $2.95 to $3.95, to cover the retailer's processing costs. These transfers typically take several hours or one business day to appear in the account.

Bank transfers or checks are not typically used for inmate accounts anymore, as most facilities have switched to electronic systems. However, some older or smaller facilities may still accept checks sent directly to the facility's business office. If considering this method, contact the facility first to confirm they accept checks and
