Learn How to Send Messages and Make Calls

Understanding Your Communication Options

Modern communication has evolved significantly over the past two decades. People today can reach each other through multiple methods, each with different features, costs, and reliability levels. Understanding these options helps you choose what works best for your situation and budget.

Traditional phone calls over cellular networks remain one of the most widely used communication methods. When you make a call on a cell phone, your voice travels through radio waves to the nearest cell tower, then through telephone networks to reach the recipient's phone. This technology has existed for decades and continues to be reliable for most people.

Text messaging, or SMS (Short Message Service), allows you to send written messages through cellular networks. Unlike calls, texts don't require both people to be available at the same time. You can send a message and the recipient reads it whenever they're ready. Text messages are limited to about 160 characters per message, though most phones automatically split longer messages into multiple texts.

Internet-based messaging and calling services have grown dramatically since the mid-2000s. These services use data connections (WiFi or mobile data) instead of traditional phone networks. Examples include messaging apps, video call platforms, and voice-over-internet services. These often cost less than traditional calls, especially for long-distance or international communication.

Each communication method has trade-offs. Traditional calls and texts work almost everywhere you have cellular signal. Internet-based services require a data connection but often provide additional features like video, group messaging, and file sharing. Understanding these differences helps you pick the right tool for each situation.

Practical takeaway: List the devices and internet options you have available. This determines which communication methods will work for you in your daily life.

How to Make Phone Calls on Your Device

Making a phone call on a mobile phone is straightforward once you understand the basic steps. Whether you use an iPhone, Android phone, or another smartphone, the process follows similar principles.

First, locate the Phone app on your device. On most phones, this appears as a green icon (on iPhones) or a simple phone symbol. Open the app by tapping it. You'll see several tabs or options: typically "Favorites," "Recents," "Contacts," or a keypad. To make a call, you can either dial the number directly using the keypad or select a contact from your list.

To dial directly, tap the keypad tab and use your finger to press the numbers. You'll see the digits appear on your screen as you type. Once you've entered the complete phone number, look for a green button or circle with a phone symbol and press it. Your phone will begin connecting the call. You'll see information on the screen showing the number being called, the duration of the call, and options to add another call, put the current call on speaker, or access other features.

Using your contacts makes calling even simpler. If the person's number is already saved in your phone, you can find their name by scrolling through your contacts list or using the search function. Tap their name, and you'll see their contact card appear. Press the phone number you want to call, and the phone will begin dialing.

During a call, you have several options available on your screen. The speaker button lets you hear the call through your phone's speaker instead of holding it to your ear. The mute button prevents the other person from hearing you temporarily. The keypad button lets you enter numbers during the call, which is useful for navigating automated systems. To end the call, press the red button or "End Call" option.

If you need to talk to someone who doesn't speak your language, some phones and calling services offer real-time translation features, though the quality can vary. Many people keep pen and paper nearby when making important calls to jot down information.

Practical takeaway: Save frequently called numbers in your contacts with clear names so you can reach them quickly without having to remember or look up numbers.

Sending Text Messages and Written Communication

Text messaging is one of the most convenient ways to send quick written messages. Unlike phone calls, texts don't require both people to be available at the same time, making them useful when someone might be busy or in a situation where they can't talk.

To send a text message, open your Messages app (usually a speech bubble icon). Look for an option to create a new message or conversation. You'll need to enter the recipient's phone number or select their name from your contacts. Type your message in the text field that appears at the bottom of the screen. Your message can be as short as one word or several sentences. Once you're satisfied with what you've written, look for a "Send" button and tap it.

Text messages travel through cellular networks. They don't require an internet connection, which makes them reliable in areas with weak data coverage. However, they do require an active phone plan with texting included. Many plans today include unlimited texting, while older plans sometimes charge per message.

When you receive a text, you'll typically see a notification on your phone's screen. You can read it immediately or check it later in your Messages app. Replying works the same way: open the conversation, type your response, and send it.

Group texting lets you send one message to multiple people. When you create a new message, you can add several phone numbers or contacts instead of just one. Everyone in the group receives your message, and depending on how group messaging works on your phone, you may see replies from all participants.

For longer conversations or sharing files like photos and documents, internet-based messaging services often work better than traditional text messages. Apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or iMessage (on Apple devices) allow you to send longer messages, photos, videos, and files. These services require an internet connection but often provide more features than SMS texting.

When texting important information like addresses, account numbers, or sensitive details, consider whether text is truly the safest method. Some information might be better communicated through a phone call or in person.

Practical takeaway: Keep text messages brief and clear. Long, complicated information is often better communicated by phone or in person to reduce misunderstandings.

Using Internet-Based Messaging and Calling Apps

Internet-based communication services have become increasingly popular because they offer more features than traditional phone calls and texts, often at lower cost. These services use your phone's data connection rather than cellular networks, so they work wherever you have WiFi or mobile data.

To use an internet-based messaging app, you first need to download and install it on your phone. Most apps are free to download from your phone's app store (Google Play Store for Android, App Store for iPhones). Once installed, you typically need to create an account or sign in. Some apps ask for your phone number, others ask you to create a username or use an existing account from another service.

Common messaging apps include WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, and Signal. Each works similarly: you find contacts, start conversations, and send messages. The main differences are in features and security. WhatsApp and Signal, for example, emphasize privacy and encrypt messages so only the sender and recipient can read them. Messenger integrates with Facebook and allows video calls and group chats. Most offer free messaging as long as you have an internet connection.

Video calling through apps has become standard. Services like Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, and Skype let you see and hear the other person during a call. To make a video call, you typically find the contact in the app and select the video call option. The person receives a notification that you're calling, and they can accept or decline. Video calling requires a decent internet connection, ideally WiFi, since video uses more data than regular calls or messages.

Group messaging and calling is simpler through these apps than through traditional texting. You can create a group, add multiple people, and send messages or start a call with everyone simultaneously. Many people use group messaging for work teams, family updates, or friend groups. Some apps show when people are typing, have read your message, or are currently online.

Voice calling through apps works similarly to regular calls. Your voice travels through the internet instead of phone networks. Call quality depends on your internet connection. WiFi connections usually provide better quality than mobile data. Many apps allow you to make calls to people outside the service if you pay for credits, but calling other users within the app is usually free.

Practical takeaway: Choose one or two messaging apps that your most frequent contacts use. Having everyone on
