Learn How to Run DISM Restore Health Command

Understanding DISM and System File Checker Basics

DISM stands for Deployment Image Servicing and Management. It is a command-line tool built into Windows operating systems that works alongside another tool called System File Checker (SFC). Both tools serve to maintain the health of your Windows installation by identifying and repairing corrupted system files.

Windows contains thousands of system files that control how your computer operates. These files can become corrupted due to various reasons: unexpected shutdowns, malware infections, incomplete Windows updates, or hardware failures. When system files become damaged, you may experience problems like slow performance, frequent crashes, blue screen errors, or applications that refuse to launch.

DISM differs from SFC in important ways. The System File Checker tool scans your computer and repairs corrupted files using a local cache of known-good files stored on your system. DISM, by contrast, can connect to Windows Update servers to retrieve replacement files directly from Microsoft when the local cache contains corrupted versions. This makes DISM particularly valuable when your system's internal backup files are also damaged.

The "Restore Health" command specifically tells DISM to scan for problems and attempt repairs. It does not delete files or change your personal data. Instead, it replaces damaged system components with verified copies. According to Windows documentation, running DISM Restore Health can resolve issues in roughly 40-60% of cases where system file corruption is the root cause.

Understanding this distinction matters because it helps you know what to expect. DISM Restore Health is not a quick fix for all computer problems. It specifically targets system file corruption. If your computer has malware, hardware failures, driver issues, or other problems unrelated to corrupted Windows files, DISM will not resolve those issues. This foundational knowledge helps you determine whether running this command is appropriate for your situation.

Practical takeaway: Before running DISM, identify whether your symptoms suggest file corruption (crashes, error messages about missing files, update failures) or other problems. This helps you set realistic expectations about whether DISM will solve your issue.

When to Use DISM Restore Health Command

Recognizing the right situations to use DISM Restore Health helps you troubleshoot problems more effectively. Certain symptoms indicate that corrupted system files may be the cause. The most common signs include Windows Update failures, where the system repeatedly attempts to install updates but the process stops partway through or reverts changes. You might see error codes like 0x800F0900 or 0x80070570, which Microsoft documentation specifically associates with system file corruption.

Another indicator is the appearance of error messages mentioning missing DLL files or system components. For example, if you see messages stating "svchost.exe error" or "critical system file missing," your system files may be damaged. Blue screen errors (also called stop errors or crash dumps) sometimes result from corrupted system files, though they can also stem from hardware or driver problems. Programs that suddenly stop working without explanation may indicate corrupted system libraries they depend on.

Slow startup times and general system sluggishness, when not caused by malware or hard drive failure, sometimes relate to corrupted system files. Similarly, if your computer frequently restarts unexpectedly or shuts down abruptly, corrupted system files could be responsible. Windows Defender or other security software performing slower scans than usual may signal that system integrity is compromised.

You should run DISM Restore Health after failed Windows Update attempts, especially if the updates fail multiple times with the same error. It is also recommended after recovering from a malware infection, as malware sometimes damages system files during its removal process. Some advanced troubleshooting steps in Microsoft support articles specifically recommend DISM as a prerequisite before taking other actions.

However, DISM is not appropriate for all problems. Hardware failures like bad hard drive sectors, damaged RAM, or failing power supplies require physical component replacement. Malware that persists despite antivirus removal needs professional security services. Driver conflicts require driver updates or uninstallation. Using DISM when these other issues are present wastes time and delays addressing the actual problem.

Practical takeaway: Run DISM Restore Health when you experience Windows Update failures, missing system file error messages, or unexplained system crashes. Skip it if you suspect hardware failure or active malware, as those require different solutions.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Running DISM Restore Health

Running DISM Restore Health requires accessing the command prompt with administrator permissions. The process differs slightly depending on your Windows version, but the fundamental steps remain consistent across Windows 10 and Windows 11.

First, save any open files and close all running applications. Open the Start menu and type "Command Prompt" into the search box. When Command Prompt appears in the results, right-click it and select "Run as Administrator." Windows will display a user account control prompt asking whether you want to allow this program to make changes to your device. Click "Yes" to proceed. You should now see a command prompt window with administrator privileges, indicated by the word "Administrator" in the title bar.

In the command prompt window, type the following command exactly as shown: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Then press Enter. Note that there are spaces between each forward slash and the text. If you type this incorrectly, the command will not execute properly. The forward slashes are different from backslashes.

After you press Enter, DISM will begin scanning your system. This process typically takes between 15 to 60 minutes depending on your system's speed and the extent of any corruption. During scanning, you will see a progress percentage displayed. The command prompt window will show "Searching for packageable items" and similar status messages. Do not close the command prompt window during this time, as interrupting the process may leave your system in an unstable state.

When the scan completes, you will see a final status message. Common outcomes include "The restore operation completed successfully," which means DISM found and repaired corrupted files, or "The image is already healthy," which means no corruption was detected. Less commonly, you might see an error message stating that the operation could not complete. If this occurs, you can try running the command again, or you may need to use additional troubleshooting steps.

After DISM completes, restart your computer. Many system file repairs require a restart to take effect. After restarting, observe whether your previous symptoms have improved. If problems persist, you may need to run System File Checker next, or seek additional technical support.

Practical takeaway: Allow 30-90 minutes for the command to complete, do not interrupt it, and restart your computer afterward. Document any error messages you see so you can reference them if problems continue.

Understanding DISM Output Messages and Results

When DISM completes its scan, the final message tells you what was found and what actions were taken. Learning to interpret these messages helps you understand your system's condition and whether further action is needed.

"The restore operation completed successfully" indicates that DISM found corrupted system files and successfully replaced them using copies from Windows Update. This outcome is positive and means the tool did its job. After seeing this message, restart your computer and observe whether the symptoms that prompted you to run DISM have decreased or disappeared.

"The image is already healthy" means DISM scanned your system but found no corrupted system files. This does not mean your computer is problem-free—it means system file corruption is not the issue. If you continue experiencing the problems that prompted you to run DISM, the cause likely lies elsewhere. You might need to check for malware, update drivers, test your hard drive, or address other hardware concerns.

Error messages indicate that the restore operation did not complete successfully. "The operation could not be completed due to pending operations" means your system has unfinished Windows updates in the queue. Restart your computer and wait for updates to complete, then try DISM again. "Error 0x80070070" often means insufficient disk space. You need at least 2-3 gigabytes of free space for DISM to work properly. Delete temporary files or unneeded programs to free space.

Some error codes suggest that the system file cache itself is corrupted beyond repair. If you see "The DISM log file can be found at" followed by a file path, you can open that log file to read detailed information about what D
