Learn How to Reset Your Apple Watch

Understanding Your Apple Watch Reset Options

An Apple Watch can be reset in different ways depending on what you're trying to accomplish. Before you begin any reset process, it's important to understand which type of reset matches your situation. Apple Watch devices support several reset methods, each serving different purposes. Some resets only clear minor settings, while others completely erase all data and return the watch to factory conditions.

The most common reason people reset an Apple Watch is to troubleshoot performance issues. If your watch runs slowly, apps freeze, or the battery drains unusually fast, a reset may help. Another frequent reason is preparing a watch for sale or transfer to another person. You might also need to reset if you're switching from one paired iPhone to a different one, or if you've forgotten your passcode.

Apple provides several reset pathways. A soft reset (often called a force restart) takes only seconds and doesn't erase anything. A standard reset clears some settings while keeping your data. A complete erase removes everything and returns the watch to how it was when you first opened the box. Understanding these differences prevents accidental data loss or incomplete troubleshooting.

Your Apple Watch model matters too. Series 8, Series 7, and Series 6 watches use slightly different menu pathways than earlier models like Series 3 or Series 4. Older watches with watchOS 5 or earlier have different reset procedures than newer watches running watchOS 9 or 10. Checking your specific model before starting ensures you follow the correct steps.

Practical Takeaway: Before resetting, identify which model you own and what problem you're addressing. Check your Apple Watch model by opening the Settings app, tapping General, then About. Note the model name. This information helps you follow the right reset procedure for your specific device.

Performing a Soft Reset (Force Restart) on Your Apple Watch

A soft reset is the gentlest reset option available. It doesn't delete any information, settings, or apps from your watch. Instead, it simply restarts the operating system, similar to turning your watch off and back on. This method works well when your watch is acting slow, frozen, or unresponsive. Most people should try a soft reset first before attempting more serious resets.

To perform a soft reset on most modern Apple Watch models (Series 4 and newer), locate the Digital Crown on the right side of your watch and the side button just below it. Press and hold both buttons simultaneously. Keep holding them for about 10 to 15 seconds. You'll see the power-off slider appear on the screen. Don't release the buttons yet. Continue holding until you see the Apple logo appear, which signals that your watch is restarting. The entire process typically takes 15 to 20 seconds from start to finish.

For Apple Watch Series 3 and earlier models, the process is identical. Press and hold both the Digital Crown and the side button together. Wait for the power-off slider to appear, then continue holding until the Apple logo shows. Even though the procedure is the same, older watches may take slightly longer to restart.

After your watch restarts, wait a minute or two before using it. Give the system a moment to fully load. You should notice the watch responding normally again. All your data, apps, watch faces, and settings remain exactly as they were. A soft reset is completely safe and you cannot lose anything by doing it.

According to Apple support data, about 70% of watch performance issues resolve with a soft reset alone. This makes it the most effective first step for troubleshooting. If your watch was lagging or apps were crashing, you'll often see immediate improvement.

Practical Takeaway: Try a soft reset whenever your Apple Watch acts slow or unresponsive. Press and hold both the Digital Crown and side button for 10 to 15 seconds until you see the Apple logo. This takes less than a minute and solves most performance problems without any data loss.

Resetting Apple Watch Settings Without Losing Data

Sometimes you want to reset certain settings without erasing everything from your watch. Apple provides this middle-ground option. A settings reset clears your preferences, network connections, and some customizations, but preserves your installed apps, health data, and personal information. This option works well when specific settings are causing problems rather than the overall system.

To reset only your settings on watchOS 10 and newer versions, open the Settings app on your watch. Tap General, then scroll down and select Reset. You'll see options including "Reset Network Settings," "Reset All Settings," and "Erase All Content and Settings." Choose "Reset All Settings" if you want to preserve your apps and data but start fresh with your preferences. This removes Wi-Fi connections, Bluetooth pairings, sounds, haptics, and display settings, returning them to Apple's defaults.

The reset takes about 30 seconds to complete. Your watch may restart during the process. After it finishes, you'll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth if you use that for internet. The watch will reconnect to your iPhone automatically if they're both in range. Your health data, installed apps, and personal information all remain untouched.

On older watchOS versions (9 and earlier), navigate to Settings, then General, and look for Reset options in that menu. The specific location varies slightly depending on your watch model and software version. Older models may not have all the same reset granularity as newer versions.

This type of reset helps when you're experiencing connectivity problems, app crashes specific to certain settings, or want to change your watch's behavior without starting completely from scratch. For example, if notifications became overwhelming or sounds stopped working, resetting all settings often fixes these issues while keeping your fitness data and apps intact.

Practical Takeaway: Use "Reset All Settings" when specific features like Wi-Fi, sound, or notifications aren't working properly. This clears your preferences while keeping all data and apps. Access it through Settings > General > Reset on your watch.

Completely Erasing Your Apple Watch

A complete erase removes everything from your Apple Watch and returns it to factory condition. This is the most thorough reset available. Use this option when you're selling or giving away your watch, transferring it to someone else, or if you suspect security issues. A complete erase also works if previous reset methods haven't solved persistent problems. After a complete erase, your watch looks and functions exactly like a brand new device fresh from Apple's factory.

Before erasing, back up any important information you want to keep. Your Apple Watch doesn't store files locally the way iPhones do, but health data and activity information can be viewed through the Health app on your paired iPhone. Screenshots and personal notes should be recorded elsewhere if needed. Once you erase, recovery is not possible through normal means.

To erase on current watchOS versions, open Settings on your watch, then select General. Scroll down to find Reset or Erase options. Select "Erase All Content and Settings." Your watch will ask you to confirm because this action cannot be undone. Confirm by entering your passcode if you have one set. The erase process begins immediately. It typically takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete, during which your watch will restart several times. Don't interrupt the process by restarting your watch manually.

After the erase finishes, your watch displays the initial setup screen, the same screen you'd see if you had just unboxed it. You can either set it up as new or restore from your iPhone's backup if you previously had backups enabled. If you're giving the watch to someone else, leave it at this setup screen so they can configure it themselves.

On older Apple Watch models or earlier watchOS versions, the erase option may be worded as "Erase All Content and Settings" or simply "Erase." The location in the Settings menu might be slightly different, but the concept is identical. Find Reset or Erase in the General settings section.

Apple's security practices mean that even after a complete erase, certain activation locks may remain in place. If your watch is linked to your Apple ID, the next person to set up the watch will need to enter your Apple ID credentials or you'll need to remove the watch from your Apple ID account first. Check your Apple ID settings and remove the watch from your Devices list before handing it to someone else.

Practical Takeaway: Choose a complete erase when selling your watch, giving it to someone
