Learn How to Report a Death to Social Security

Understanding When to Report a Death to Social Security

When a person dies, notifying Social Security Administration (SSA) is an important step that affects several critical matters. The SSA maintains records on millions of Americans, and these records must be updated when someone passes away. This update affects not only the deceased person's record but also potential benefits that family members may receive, such as survivor benefits for children, spouses, or parents depending on the deceased person's work history.

According to SSA data, approximately 2.8 million deaths are reported to the agency each year. The death report serves multiple purposes: it stops any ongoing benefit payments to the deceased person, prevents identity theft through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security disability programs, and ensures that family members who may be entitled to survivor benefits are processed correctly. The timing of this report matters because benefit payments to the deceased person must cease, and any overpayments must eventually be addressed.

The responsibility for reporting typically falls on several parties. In many cases, the funeral home will report the death to SSA as part of their standard procedures. However, family members should not assume this has been done. If the deceased person was receiving Social Security benefits, their spouse, adult child, or parent may also need to report the death. Similarly, if the person was not receiving benefits but had sufficient work history to potentially provide survivor benefits to family members, reporting becomes important for those relatives to receive what they may be entitled to.

Different situations call for reporting at different times. If someone was receiving retirement benefits, disability benefits, or SSI payments, the death should be reported as soon as possible—ideally within the month of death. If the person was not receiving benefits but worked long enough to build up credits, family members should report the death if they believe they might qualify for survivor benefits based on that work history. Understanding these scenarios helps determine whether reporting is necessary in your specific situation.

Practical takeaway: Identify whether the deceased person was receiving Social Security benefits or had sufficient work history to potentially provide survivor benefits. This determines whether reporting to SSA is necessary and how soon it should be done.

Who Can Report a Death to Social Security

Several people can contact Social Security to report someone's death, and SSA accepts death reports from multiple sources. The funeral home is often the first entity to report, as funeral directors have legal obligations in many states to provide death information to SSA as part of the vital statistics reporting process. However, funeral homes don't report all deaths automatically—this typically happens when someone applies for benefits or when family members specifically request it during funeral arrangements.

Family members can also report directly to SSA. A spouse, adult child, parent, or other relative of the deceased can call the SSA toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. There's no legal requirement limiting who can report—anyone with knowledge of the death can contact SSA. Some people choose to have the funeral home handle it, while others prefer to report directly to ensure the information reaches SSA quickly and accurately. If the deceased person lived in a nursing home or other facility, staff members may report the death, though family members should verify this happened.

If the deceased person was receiving benefits, SSA must be notified by someone. If you're the surviving spouse, you have a direct interest in reporting because you may be entitled to survivor benefits or may need to address any overpayments. Adult children and parents of the deceased may also report, particularly if they believe they're entitled to survivor benefits based on the deceased's work record. In cases where the deceased had no close family, friends, or anyone with personal knowledge can report, though it's less common.

Representatives can also report on behalf of families. If you've hired a lawyer, financial advisor, or other representative to handle estate or benefits matters, they can report the death to SSA on your behalf. Some people work with Social Security representatives at local SSA field offices, and these representatives can note the death in their systems as well. In all cases, SSA may request verification of the death through a death certificate or obituary.

Practical takeaway: Identify which person in your situation is best positioned to report the death—whether that's the funeral home, a family member, or a representative. Verify that the report actually reaches SSA rather than assuming someone else has handled it.

The Step-by-Step Process for Reporting a Death

Reporting a death to Social Security follows a straightforward process, though the specific steps depend on how you choose to report and your relationship to the deceased. The most direct method is calling SSA's toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. This line operates Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time. When you call, you'll reach an SSA representative who can take the death information and update their records. Be prepared to provide the deceased person's full name, Social Security number, date of birth, and date of death.

When calling, have a death certificate or an obituary available, though you don't necessarily need it in hand during the call. SSA may ask you to send a copy afterward if they don't have enough information to confirm the death. The representative will ask basic questions about the deceased person's family, whether they were receiving benefits, and whether surviving family members might be entitled to benefits. This is purely informational—providing this information doesn't constitute filing for benefits on behalf of anyone else, though it may start the process of identifying potential survivor beneficiaries.

Another option is to report the death in person at a local Social Security field office. You can find the nearest office using the office locator tool on the SSA website at ssa.gov. Visiting in person allows you to provide original or certified copies of the death certificate and discuss any concerns directly with an SSA representative. This method takes longer than calling but may be preferable if you want to address multiple matters at once, such as understanding survivor benefit options for family members. Field office hours vary by location, so check ahead before visiting.

You can also request a representative at your local field office report the death through an online message account on my Social Security (ssa.gov/myaccount) if you have one set up. However, this method is slower than calling or visiting in person. The funeral home may also handle reporting. When making funeral arrangements, ask the funeral director specifically whether they will report the death to Social Security and request confirmation once it's done. Some funeral homes report automatically for all deaths; others only report when family members request it.

After reporting, SSA will update their records within a certain timeframe. If the deceased was receiving benefits, their monthly payment will stop. SSA will typically send a letter to the household confirming the death has been recorded. If survivors may be entitled to benefits, SSA may contact family members about those possibilities. Keep the confirmation letter for your records as proof that you reported the death.

Practical takeaway: Choose the reporting method that works best for your situation—phone (fastest), in-person (most detailed), or through a funeral home. Regardless of method, have the deceased person's Social Security number and date of death ready, and request written confirmation of the report.

What Information You'll Need to Report a Death

Having the right information readily available makes reporting a death straightforward and prevents delays or errors in SSA's records. The most critical piece of information is the deceased person's Social Security number (SSN). This nine-digit number uniquely identifies them in SSA's system and ensures the report reaches the correct record. If you don't know the number, you may have it on family documents, bank statements, tax returns, or the Social Security card itself if it's still available. Without the SSN, SSA can still identify the person, but it requires additional information.

You'll also need the deceased person's full legal name as it appears on their Social Security record. This includes their first name, middle name (if any), and last name. If the person had legally changed their name at any point, knowing both the previous and current names is helpful because SSA records may reflect the name used when they applied for the Social Security number. The date of birth is another essential piece of information—provide it in the format the representative requests, typically month, day, and year. The date of death is equally important; this is the calendar date the person passed away.

Additional information that helps SSA process the report accurately includes the deceased person's address (where they lived at the time of death), marital status, and whether they were receiving Social Security benefits at the time they died. If they were receiving benefits, knowing which type (retirement, disability, SSI, or survivor benefits) helps SSA locate the correct case file. If you have the death certificate or obitu
