Learn How to Replace a Garage Door Spring

Understanding Garage Door Spring Systems

Garage door springs are the components that counterbalance the weight of your garage door, making it possible to open and close without excessive effort. Most residential garage doors weigh between 300 and 500 pounds, depending on the material and size. Without springs, you would need to manually lift this substantial weight every time you wanted to open the door. There are two main types of spring systems found in residential garages: torsion springs and extension springs.

Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the garage door opening, running along a metal shaft. These springs work by twisting and storing mechanical energy as the door closes, then releasing that energy to help lift the door open. Extension springs, by contrast, are mounted on either side of the door opening and stretch and contract as the door moves up and down. According to industry data, torsion springs typically last between 7 and 12 years with regular use, while extension springs may last 5 to 10 years. The lifespan depends on how frequently the door is used—a door that opens and closes 4 to 8 times daily will experience faster wear than one used less frequently.

Understanding which type of spring system your garage door uses is the first step before attempting any replacement work. Torsion and extension springs require different replacement procedures, tools, and safety considerations. Additionally, springs are under tremendous tension and pose serious safety risks if mishandled. A spring that breaks or is improperly installed can cause severe injuries or property damage. Many garage door professionals recommend that homeowners understand the basics of their spring system even if they ultimately decide to hire a professional for the actual replacement.

Practical Takeaway: Inspect your garage door system to identify whether you have torsion springs (mounted horizontally above the door) or extension springs (mounted on the sides). Count how many springs are present and note any visible damage, rust, or signs of wear. Take photos for reference when researching replacement options or consulting with professionals.

Recognizing Signs of a Broken or Failing Spring

A broken garage door spring often produces obvious signs that alert homeowners to the problem. The most common indicator is an unusual sound—a loud bang or crack that occurs when the spring suddenly breaks under tension. Some homeowners report hearing this noise from inside their home, even when they're not near the garage. If you hear such a sound, inspect the spring area immediately, as a broken spring means the door's counterbalance mechanism is no longer functional.

Another key sign is difficulty opening the garage door manually or with the automatic opener. When a spring fails, the garage door opener motor must work significantly harder to lift the full weight of the door without spring assistance. Many garage door openers have safety limits that prevent them from opening the door if springs are broken, to avoid damage to the opener mechanism itself. You may notice the door gets stuck partway up, moves very slowly, or doesn't open at all. Some homeowners push the remote button repeatedly, unaware that a broken spring is preventing operation rather than a malfunctioning opener.

Visual inspection can reveal additional problems. Look for rust or corrosion on the springs, which weakens the metal and increases break risk. Gaps or separation in the coils of a torsion spring indicate failure. For extension springs, look for stretched or misaligned coils. Springs may also show visible cracks or breaks. If you notice one spring is broken, the other spring on the opposite side is likely approaching failure as well, since springs typically age at similar rates. Many professionals recommend replacing both springs simultaneously to maintain balanced door operation and prevent the remaining spring from breaking soon after one replacement.

Practical Takeaway: Create a maintenance log for your garage door. Note any unusual sounds, slower operation, or difficulty opening the door. Document when springs were last replaced or serviced. If you suspect a broken spring, avoid operating the door repeatedly and mark the garage door as "out of service" to prevent damage to the automatic opener or injury from attempting to force the door open.

Tools and Safety Equipment You'll Need

Replacing a garage door spring requires specific tools and safety precautions. Before beginning any work, gather the necessary equipment and understand how to use each item properly. The tools needed vary slightly depending on whether you're working with torsion or extension springs, but several items are essential for either type.

For torsion spring replacement, you'll need an adjustable wrench or socket set to fit the bolts on the spring mounting brackets, a ladder or step stool for safe access, a center punch and hammer for marking positions, vice grips or locking pliers to secure the shaft, and a spring winding tool (a specialized tool that looks like a heavy steel rod with handles). You'll also need the replacement spring itself, which should match the specifications of the original spring including diameter, length, and spring constant (measured in pounds-per-inch or PSI). Extension spring replacement requires an adjustable wrench, a ladder, safety cables (which should already be installed on extension springs), the replacement springs, and possibly new pulleys if the originals show wear.

Safety equipment is equally important. Safety glasses protect your eyes from metal debris or spring recoil. Heavy-duty work gloves protect against sharp edges and provide grip security. A sturdy ladder rated for your weight is essential, as you'll be working at or above shoulder height. Most importantly, you need to understand proper spring tension release procedures. A spring under tension can cause serious injuries if it suddenly releases, causing the spring to snap with tremendous force. Never work on a garage door spring without understanding the specific risks and safety procedures for your spring type.

Many homeowners choose to rent spring winding tools from equipment rental shops rather than purchase them, since these specialized tools are used infrequently. Rental costs typically range from $15 to $40 per day. Hardware stores and home improvement centers stock replacement springs, though you'll need to know your door's specifications. Some online retailers offer springs at competitive prices, but shipping costs can be significant due to weight.

Practical Takeaway: Before purchasing or renting tools, consult your garage door's documentation or contact the manufacturer to determine exact spring specifications. Take measurements of the existing springs, including diameter, length, and any markings indicating spring strength. Create a detailed list of required tools and verify you have everything before beginning work. Set aside a full afternoon or day for the project, as rushing increases the risk of mistakes or injuries.

Step-by-Step Process for Replacing Torsion Springs

Torsion spring replacement involves several critical steps that must be performed in the correct sequence. First, disconnect the garage door opener by unplugging it from the electrical outlet. This prevents accidental activation while you're working. Close the garage door completely and place a ladder under the springs to ensure safe access. Using vice grips or locking pliers, secure the torsion shaft on both sides of the center bracket. This prevents the shaft from rotating suddenly if tension isn't properly maintained.

Next, you'll need to reduce tension on the spring. Torsion springs have adjustable brackets at each end that control spring tension. Loosen the set screws on these brackets gradually and evenly on both sides, turning each bolt approximately one-quarter turn at a time. Use your spring winding tool to support the shaft and control tension as you work. This step requires careful attention because improper tension release can allow the spring to unwind rapidly and violently. After releasing tension sufficiently, mark the position of the adjustment bracket on the shaft with a center punch and hammer—this mark helps you return to the correct tension when installing the new spring.

Once tension is released, remove the bolts securing the spring to the shaft and carefully slide the old spring off the shaft. Inspect the shaft for damage or wear. Slide the new spring onto the shaft, aligning it in the same position as the original. The spring should fit snugly without forcing. Install the bolts through the spring's mounting holes and the bracket, but don't tighten them fully yet. Using your winding tool, gradually increase tension by turning the adjustment brackets. The correct tension should allow you to lift the garage door by hand about halfway up with moderate effort—it shouldn't open on its own or require excessive force.

After achieving proper tension, tighten all mounting bolts securely. Slowly release the vice grips securing the shaft, monitoring for any unexpected movement. Test the door operation by opening and closing it manually several times before reconnecting the automatic opener. Listen for any unusual sounds and verify that the door moves smoothly and stops at the correct positions at top and bottom. If the door doesn't operate smoothly or tension seems incorrect, stop and reassess rather than continuing with automatic opener connection.
