Learn How to Replace a Bathroom Vanity

Understanding Bathroom Vanity Basics and Why Replacement Matters

A bathroom vanity is the cabinet structure that sits beneath your sink, combining storage space with a countertop surface. Most vanities house plumbing connections, drawers, and cabinet doors that hold everyday bathroom items. Understanding the basics of your current vanity will help you determine what type of replacement best suits your needs.

Bathroom vanities typically range from 24 inches to 72 inches in width, though custom sizes exist. The height is generally 30 to 36 inches from floor to countertop, though comfort heights of 36 inches are becoming more common in modern bathrooms. Depth usually measures 21 to 22 inches, though pedestal sinks and floating vanities may differ. The material composition varies widely—some vanities use solid wood, while others use plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), or particle board covered with veneer.

Reasons to replace a vanity include water damage from leaks, outdated appearance, insufficient storage, plumbing issues, or desire for a bathroom upgrade. Water damage often appears as soft spots, discoloration, or separation of materials. A vanity may also need replacement if the countertop cracks, the plumbing deteriorates, or the cabinet no longer meets your household needs.

Before starting your project, measure your current vanity's width, height, and depth. Take note of your sink type—whether it's a drop-in sink (sits on top of the vanity), an undermount sink (attached from below), or an integral sink (part of the vanity countertop). Photograph your current plumbing setup, including the location of water supply lines and the drain configuration. This information will guide your selection of a replacement vanity.

Practical Takeaway: Measure your space accurately and photograph your existing plumbing before shopping for a replacement. Most bathroom vanities follow standard dimensions, but knowing your exact measurements prevents costly mistakes during installation.

Selecting the Right Vanity for Your Space and Needs

Choosing a replacement vanity involves evaluating several factors: the space available in your bathroom, your storage requirements, your budget, and your design preferences. Start by understanding what you need from your new vanity. Do you require more drawer space? Do you want a larger countertop? Are you looking for a specific style to match your bathroom's aesthetic?

Vanities come in various styles and price ranges. Budget-friendly options start around $150 to $300 and typically feature particle board construction with laminate finishes. Mid-range vanities, priced between $300 and $800, usually incorporate plywood cabinets with better hardware and more durable finishes. High-end vanities, costing $800 and above, often feature solid wood construction, premium countertops, and specialized hardware. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, bathroom renovations represent a significant home investment, with vanity and sink replacement being one of the most common updates homeowners undertake.

Consider the layout of your bathroom when selecting a vanity. In a small bathroom, a 24-inch or 30-inch vanity with vertical storage may work better than a wider unit. In larger bathrooms, you might opt for double-sink vanities that range from 48 to 72 inches, providing convenience for multiple users. Measure doorways and hallways to ensure your new vanity can physically enter your home and fit through your bathroom door—many homeowners overlook this critical step.

Material selection affects both appearance and durability. Solid wood vanities offer longevity and can be refinished, though they require moisture protection. Plywood vanities provide better water resistance than particle board at a moderate price point. Some vanities feature soft-close drawer hinges and undermount drawer systems that enhance functionality. Countertop materials include laminate, solid surface, quartz, granite, and marble—each with different durability and maintenance requirements.

Practical Takeaway: List your specific needs (storage, width, style) and measure your bathroom doorway and hallways before selecting a vanity. This ensures your choice fits both your space and your functional requirements.

Gathering Tools and Materials for Vanity Replacement

Successfully replacing a bathroom vanity requires proper tools and materials. Having everything on hand before starting prevents interruptions and reduces project time. Most homeowners can complete this project in four to six hours, though plumbing complications may extend the timeline.

Essential tools include an adjustable wrench, a Phillips head screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver, a utility knife, a tape measure, a level, and a bucket or towels to catch water during disconnection. Many people also benefit from having a reciprocating saw or oscillating multi-tool for cutting caulk, though these aren't strictly necessary. A caulk gun, silicone caulk, and paintable caulk help seal gaps between the vanity and wall. A flashlight or headlamp improves visibility in the often-dark space under a sink.

Materials you'll need include plumber's putty or silicone sealant for sealing connections. If you're installing a new faucet with your vanity, you may need faucet-specific materials like supply line connectors and aerator screens. P-trap assemblies and tailpieces may be necessary if your new vanity has different drain configurations. Some vanities come with a pre-installed faucet, while others require separate purchase and installation of this component.

Safety equipment matters when working on this project. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and rough materials. Safety glasses protect your eyes from dust and debris, particularly when cutting or sanding. Old clothing that you don't mind getting wet is practical, as water will likely drip during plumbing disconnection. A dust mask is useful if you're sanding or cutting materials.

Before purchasing your replacement vanity, verify what comes included. Some vanities include the countertop, sink, and faucet, while others sell components separately. Confirm that your new vanity includes mounting hardware and any necessary brackets. If the vanity doesn't include a faucet, purchase one that matches your sink type and has supply line connections compatible with your existing plumbing.

Practical Takeaway: Gather all tools before starting—this prevents mid-project delays. Most of these tools are standard household items; you may already own many of them.

Removing Your Old Vanity Safely and Properly

Removing the existing vanity is the first major step in replacement. This process involves turning off water supply, disconnecting plumbing, removing caulk, and detaching the cabinet from the wall. Taking time with this phase prevents water damage and ensures you have a clean surface for your new vanity.

Begin by locating the water shut-off valves beneath your sink. Turn these valves clockwise to stop water flow. If your bathroom has no individual shut-off valves, you'll need to turn off the main water supply for your home. Open the faucet to release any remaining water pressure in the lines. Place towels or a bucket beneath the sink to catch any remaining water.

Next, disconnect the supply lines (also called angle stops or supply tubes) from the shutoff valves. Use your adjustable wrench to loosen the nut connecting the supply line to the valve, turning counterclockwise. Some water will likely remain in these lines, so have towels ready. After removing supply lines, locate where the drain connects to the P-trap—the U-shaped pipe beneath the sink. Loosen the slip nuts on both ends of the P-trap by hand or with your wrench, then carefully remove it and let any remaining water drain into your bucket.

With plumbing disconnected, examine how the vanity is attached to the wall. Most vanities are screwed or bolted to wall studs from behind the cabinet. Look inside the cabinet for these fastening points. You may need to use a reciprocating saw or multi-tool to cut caulk along the wall where the vanity meets the wall surface and where the backsplash connects. This caulk acts like adhesive and must be cut before the vanity can be removed. Carefully cut around the edges with your utility knife or multi-tool to loosen the seal.

Once caulk is removed and plumbing is disconnected, you can remove wall fasteners. Have a helper support the vanity as you remove the last fasteners, as the cabinet may be heavy and could
