Learn How to Renew Your Texas Driver's License

Understanding Texas Driver's License Renewal Requirements

A Texas driver's license is an official identification document issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). This license allows you to operate a motor vehicle on public roads and serves as a form of identification in many situations. Understanding when and how to renew your license is important because driving with an expired license can result in traffic citations and legal consequences.

Texas driver's licenses expire on your birthday. The expiration date depends on your age when you received the license. If you were under 85 years old when you got your license, it will expire on your birthday five years later. For example, if you received a license on January 15, 2020, at age 30, that license would expire on January 15, 2025. If you are 85 years old or older, your license expires every two years instead of five.

The state of Texas issues different types of driver's licenses based on your needs. A standard Class C license is what most people use for driving personal vehicles. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders must renew following different rules because they operate larger or specialized vehicles. Motorcycle endorsements also have specific renewal information. This guide focuses on standard Class C licenses, which account for the majority of Texas drivers.

You can renew your license up to one year before it expires. This means if your birthday is in June, you could renew your license starting in June of the previous year. However, you cannot renew after your license has expired. Driving with an expired license is illegal in Texas, even if you have already started the renewal process.

Practical Takeaway: Check your driver's license now to find your expiration date. Mark your calendar at least two months before that date to give yourself time to complete the renewal process. Knowing your expiration date helps you plan ahead and avoid driving with an expired license.

Renewal Methods Available in Texas

Texas offers multiple ways to renew your driver's license, giving you options based on your situation and preferences. Each method has different requirements and timeframes. Understanding these options helps you choose the approach that works best for you.

Online renewal through the Texas DPS website (texas.gov/dps) is available for many drivers. To use online renewal, your license must not be expired for more than two years, you must be a U.S. citizen, you must be between 18 and 84 years old, and you must not have certain medical conditions that require a vision test or in-person review. The online process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and costs $16 for a five-year renewal. Your new license will arrive by mail within 7 to 10 business days after approval. This method is convenient because you can complete it from home at any time of day.

By-mail renewal is another option for drivers meeting specific criteria. You must request a renewal form from the Texas DPS. You fill out the form, include payment, and mail everything to the DPS office. This process takes longer than online renewal, typically 4 to 6 weeks from when the DPS receives your materials. By-mail renewal costs $16 for a five-year license. Not all drivers can renew by mail. You cannot use this method if your license has been suspended, if you have certain medical conditions, or if you need to update your address.

In-person renewal at a Texas DPS Driver's License Office is available to all drivers, regardless of age or citizenship status. You visit a local DPS office, bring required documents, take a new photo, pass a vision test, and pay the renewal fee. In-person renewal costs $16 for a five-year license or $32 for a ten-year license if you are 85 or older (this longer option is only available in person). The new license is typically issued on the same day you visit. DPS offices throughout Texas handle in-person renewals, with locations in every county.

Practical Takeaway: Determine which renewal method fits your situation. If you meet the requirements for online renewal and your license is not expired, this is the quickest option. If you prefer in-person renewal or your situation does not meet online requirements, find your nearest DPS office and check their hours before visiting.

Documents and Information You Will Need

Gathering the correct documents before you begin the renewal process saves time and prevents delays. The documents required depend on which renewal method you choose and your specific circumstances.

For online renewal, you need your current driver's license number, your Social Security number, and your date of birth. You must have a valid email address to receive updates about your renewal status. You also need to confirm your current address, which should match the address on file with the Texas DPS. If you have moved recently, you may need to update your address, which may require in-person renewal instead. Online renewal asks you to review and confirm information already on file, rather than providing new documents.

For by-mail renewal, you need to complete the DL-43 form (Renewal Application for Driver's License or Non-Commercial License). You can obtain this form by contacting the Texas DPS or visiting their website. The form asks for your current license number, your full name, date of birth, and current address. You must include a check or money order for $16 payable to the State of Texas. If your address has changed, you may need additional documentation showing your new residence, such as a utility bill or lease agreement dated within the last 90 days.

For in-person renewal at a DPS office, bring your current driver's license as your primary form of identification. You also need to provide proof of your Social Security number. This can be your original Social Security card, a W-2 form, a tax return, or a 1099 form. You need proof of residency showing your current Texas address. Documents that work include a utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, or government mail dated within the last 90 days. If you have changed your name since your last license was issued, bring a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the name change. If you wear corrective lenses, bring your glasses or contacts to the DPS office for the vision test.

Practical Takeaway: Create a simple checklist based on your chosen renewal method and gather all documents before starting the process. For in-person renewal, take photos of documents like utility bills before visiting the DPS office. This prevents the frustration of discovering you lack a required document after arriving at the office.

Step-by-Step Online Renewal Process

Online renewal offers the most convenient option for eligible drivers. The process is straightforward when you follow each step carefully.

Start by visiting the Texas DPS website at texas.gov/dps. Look for the Driver's License section and find the link for online renewal. The website asks you to confirm that you meet the requirements for online renewal. You must verify that your license has not expired for more than two years, that you are between 18 and 84 years old, that you are a U.S. citizen, and that you do not have certain medical conditions. If you do not meet these requirements, you will be directed to other renewal options.

Once you confirm your eligibility, you will be asked to enter your driver's license number and date of birth. The Texas DPS system will search its records for your file. This step typically takes just a few seconds. If the system cannot find your record, an error message will appear, and you will need to try again or choose a different renewal method. If your information is found, the system will display your current information on file.

Review all the information carefully before proceeding. The system shows your name, date of birth, address, eye color, height, and other details from your current license. If any information is incorrect, you cannot fix it through online renewal. You will need to visit a DPS office in person to make corrections. If everything is correct, you can confirm that you want to renew your license.

Next, you will be asked to select a payment method. Texas DPS accepts credit cards and debit cards for online renewal. The cost is $16 for a five-year renewal. Some credit card companies may charge a small processing fee in addition to the renewal cost. Enter your card information carefully, as billing errors can delay your renewal. After payment is processed, the system will show a confirmation number. Write this number down or take a screenshot for your records.

You will receive a confirmation email at the address associated with your online account. This email contains your confirmation number and explains that your renewal is being processed. Your new license will be mailed to the
