Learn How to Prepare for the ACT

Understanding the ACT: Test Structure and Content Overview

The ACT is a standardized test that measures college readiness across four main subjects. Unlike the SAT, which focuses on reasoning and problem-solving, the ACT emphasizes what students have learned in high school courses. Understanding the basic structure helps you know what to expect on test day and where to focus your preparation efforts.

The test contains four required sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each section has a specific number of questions and time limit. The English section includes 75 questions answered in 45 minutes and covers grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. The Mathematics section has 60 questions in 60 minutes, testing algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and precalculus concepts typically learned by the end of junior year. The Reading section presents four passages with 40 questions to answer in 35 minutes, covering prose fiction, humanities, social studies, and natural sciences. The Science section includes 40 questions in 35 minutes, but contrary to popular belief, it doesn't require advanced science knowledge—it tests your ability to interpret data, graphs, and scientific reasoning.

Many students also take the optional Writing section, which is a 40-minute essay. Colleges vary in their requirements for this section, so check specific school websites to determine if you need it. Your composite score ranges from 1 to 36 and represents the average of all four section scores.

Practical takeaway: Visit the official ACT website to download practice tests and review the exact question types in each section. Spending one hour reviewing sample questions before beginning formal preparation helps you understand what the test actually measures versus misconceptions you might have heard from peers.

Creating a Study Timeline and Setting Realistic Goals

Most students benefit from preparing for the ACT over several months rather than cramming a few weeks before the test. The amount of time you need depends on your current academic performance, target score, and learning pace. Creating a structured timeline prevents overwhelming study sessions and allows time for the material to settle into your long-term memory.

A typical preparation timeline spans 3 to 6 months. If you're currently scoring at or near your goal, you might need only 2 to 3 months. If there's a significant gap between your current performance and your target, consider starting 6 months in advance. Your target score should reflect colleges you're interested in attending. Many schools publish the middle 50 percent range of admitted students' ACT scores—aiming for the upper end of that range strengthens your application. However, scores below that range don't disqualify you, and other factors like GPA, essays, and extracurriculars matter too.

When planning your timeline, identify which sections need the most work. Many students struggle with Science and Reading because these sections require faster reading and interpretation skills than typical classroom work. Others find Math challenging depending on which topics they've studied recently. Take a full practice test to establish a baseline, then weight your study time accordingly. If Math is your strongest section and Reading your weakest, spend 40 percent of study time on Reading, 30 percent on Science, 20 percent on English, and 10 percent on Math maintenance.

Practical takeaway: Work backward from your test date. If you're testing in October and it's currently April, you have 6 months. Divide this into phases: Month 1 focuses on diagnostic testing and identifying weak areas; Months 2-4 involve targeted skill-building in each section; Month 5 emphasizes full-length practice tests under timed conditions; Month 6 covers review and refining test-taking strategy.

Mastering English and Reading Sections Through Targeted Practice

The English section tests your understanding of grammar rules, stylistic choices, and essay construction. While many students feel they can "just know" grammar intuitively, the ACT tests specific rules consistently. Success requires learning these rules explicitly, then practicing until application becomes automatic. Common topics include comma usage, subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference, verb tense consistency, and sentence structure.

Start by reviewing a grammar reference guide or textbook to understand the rules being tested. Rather than trying to memorize a comprehensive list, focus on patterns you see in practice tests. After answering 20 or 30 English questions, review your wrong answers and look for themes. You might notice you frequently miss questions about commas before conjunctions or struggle identifying sentence fragments. Once you identify patterns, study those specific rules with targeted materials. Many students improve dramatically by mastering 5 to 7 rule categories that appear repeatedly on practice tests.

The Reading section challenges many students because it requires both speed and comprehension. Unlike English class where you might spend weeks analyzing one novel, ACT Reading presents four unfamiliar passages and asks you to find specific information quickly. The key is developing a reading strategy that works for your brain. Some students read the passage first, then answer questions. Others skim the passage and refer back to it for each question. Neither approach is universally "correct"—the right strategy is whichever helps you answer more questions accurately within the time limit.

Practice tests reveal which questions cause you the most difficulty. Question types include finding main ideas, locating specific details, understanding vocabulary in context, interpreting author's tone, and making inferences. Spend extra time on inference questions since these trip up many students—you must base your answer on information in the passage, not outside knowledge. When practicing Reading, time yourself strictly and track which passages and question types slow you down most. Perhaps historical passages confuse you more than fiction, or you struggle with paired questions about scientific studies.

Practical takeaway: Choose one grammar rule to master this week. Find 15 to 20 practice questions covering that rule, work through them, and review every wrong answer to understand why the correct answer is right. Next week, move to a different rule. By dedicating focused time to one concept at a time rather than studying everything at once, you'll build genuine understanding instead of surface-level familiarity.

Developing Math Skills and Problem-Solving Strategies

ACT Math covers a broad range of topics spanning several years of high school courses. The test assumes you've completed geometry and algebra II. If you haven't taken these courses yet, preparation should begin by learning fundamental concepts in those areas. For students who have completed this coursework, ACT Math preparation focuses on applying these skills to problems presented in formats slightly different from typical textbooks.

The Math section includes questions in two formats: standard multiple-choice questions and grid-in questions where you bubble your answer into a grid. Grid-in questions are worth the same as multiple-choice and appear in a separate section of about 10 questions. Unlike multiple-choice where you can sometimes guess between remaining options, grid-in questions require you to produce the correct answer. This means careless errors become more costly on grid-in questions because there's no second chance from guessing among options.

Math performance improves through solving problems repeatedly across different topics and difficulty levels. The ACT progresses from easier to harder questions within each math section. Early questions might take 30 seconds to solve, while later questions require 2 to 3 minutes of work. A common strategy mistake is spending too much time on difficult problems and running out of time for later questions. A better approach: work through the section at a steady pace, completing all problems you find straightforward, then returning to harder problems if time permits. On your first pass, problems 1-30 might take 40 minutes, leaving 20 minutes for problems 31-60.

Certain problem types appear frequently on every ACT: systems of equations, quadratic equations, functions, geometry formulas, and word problems requiring translation to equations. Spend most of your practice time on these high-frequency topics rather than obscure material you might encounter once every few years. When practicing Math, track not just which problems you miss, but why you missed them. Did you make a calculation error? Misread the problem? Use the wrong formula? Mis-copy numbers? Each error type requires different corrective action.

Practical takeaway: Select one math topic you find challenging—perhaps quadratic equations or trigonometry. Find 20 practice problems on that topic, solve them without time pressure, and review your work carefully. Once you understand the underlying concepts, redo these same problems under timed conditions. The combination of understanding plus speed practice builds genuine competence in that area.

Conquering the Science Section and Timed Test-Taking

The Science section intimidates many students, but it measures data interpretation and reasoning skills more than science content knowledge. You might encounter passages about biology
