Learn How to Plant a Clover Lawn

Understanding Clover as a Lawn Alternative

Clover has become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to create a different kind of lawn. Unlike traditional grass lawns that require significant maintenance, clover offers several practical advantages worth considering. Clover is a legume, meaning it naturally fixes nitrogen from the air into the soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. This characteristic makes clover lawns particularly interesting for people concerned about chemical use on their property.

There are several types of clover suitable for lawns, with white clover and red clover being the most common. White clover (Trifolium repens) grows low to the ground, typically reaching 4 to 8 inches in height, making it ideal for lawn applications. Red clover (Trifolium pratense) grows slightly taller and is often used in pasture settings, though it can work in lawn mixes. Microclover, a newer variety, offers smaller leaves and a more manicured appearance that some homeowners prefer over traditional white clover.

The benefits of a clover lawn extend beyond nitrogen fixation. Clover requires less water than grass, making it suitable for dry climates or drought-prone regions. It tolerates shade better than many grass varieties and can grow in soil that might be too poor for traditional lawns. Research from the University of Minnesota indicates that clover lawns can reduce overall lawn maintenance time by approximately 40 percent compared to conventional grass lawns, primarily due to reduced fertilizer and pesticide needs.

Practical takeaway: Spend time researching which clover varieties grow well in your specific region and climate zone. Contact your local cooperative extension office, which provides region-specific information about plant varieties, or review gardening resources specific to your area to make an informed choice about which clover type suits your lawn goals.

Preparing Your Lawn for Clover Planting

Successful clover establishment begins with proper site preparation. Before planting clover, you need to assess your current lawn conditions and soil quality. Start by testing your soil, which reveals crucial information about pH levels, nutrient content, and soil texture. Most clover varieties prefer soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, though they can tolerate slightly acidic conditions. You can obtain soil testing through your local cooperative extension service, typically for a small fee, or purchase a soil testing kit from a garden center.

Once you understand your soil composition, the next step involves reducing or removing existing grass and weeds. For small areas, you can manually pull existing vegetation or use a garden fork to loosen soil and remove grass clumps. For larger spaces, you have several options: you can scalp the lawn by mowing very short and vigorously raking to expose soil, you can apply a non-selective herbicide following label directions several weeks before planting, or you can remove turf using a sod cutter. If using herbicides, ensure you follow safety instructions and wait the recommended time before planting clover.

Soil preparation also involves addressing compaction. Walking on soil repeatedly compacts it, reducing the ability of clover seeds to make contact with soil particles—a requirement for germination. Use a garden fork or aerator to break up compacted areas. In severely compacted soil, you may need to add compost or other organic matter to improve soil structure. A typical application rate is 1 to 2 inches of compost worked into the top few inches of soil.

Practical takeaway: Schedule soil testing at least two months before your planned planting date. This provides time to adjust pH or add necessary nutrients based on test results. If your soil pH is too low, you may need to add lime; if it's too high, sulfur can lower it. Follow application rates provided with your soil test results or from your extension office.

Selecting and Obtaining Quality Clover Seed

The quality of seed you purchase directly impacts your success with a clover lawn. Not all clover seed is equal—seed quality is measured by germination rate, purity, and the percentage of viable seeds. When purchasing clover seed, look for information on the package that indicates germination percentage, which typically ranges from 80 to 95 percent for quality seed. A higher germination rate means more seeds will sprout, reducing the amount of seed you need to purchase. Purity ratings indicate the percentage of seed that is actually clover rather than other plant seeds or inert material.

You'll find clover seed available from several sources: traditional garden centers, online seed companies, agricultural supply stores, and native plant nurseries. Prices vary based on seed quality and the variety selected. White clover seed typically costs between $8 and $15 per pound, while microclover, being more specialized, may cost $20 to $30 per pound. A typical lawn application requires 4 to 6 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet when planting clover alone, or 2 to 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet if overseed-mixing clover with existing grass.

Some homeowners choose to purchase seed blends that combine clover with grass species, which can ease the transition from a traditional lawn. These blends typically contain 20 to 50 percent clover by weight. When purchasing pre-made blends, verify that the grass varieties included are suited to your region and are not invasive species. Reading the seed package label carefully provides information about the specific cultivars, germination rates, and recommended planting rates.

Practical takeaway: Before purchasing seed, calculate your lawn area in square feet by multiplying length by width. Purchase seed with a germination rate of at least 85 percent, and buy from suppliers that store seed in cool conditions, as stored seed quality decreases over time. Purchase only the amount you plan to plant within the current growing season, as seed viability declines during storage.

Planting Clover Seed Successfully

Timing matters significantly when planting clover. The best planting windows are spring (after the last frost and when soil is workable) and fall (6 to 8 weeks before the first frost). Spring planting works well in most regions, giving clover several months to establish strong roots before summer heat. Fall planting offers advantages in areas with hot summers, as clover establishes during cooler temperatures. Avoid planting during summer heat or when soil is frozen or waterlogged.

The actual planting process involves several steps. First, rake the prepared seedbed to create a level surface with good seed-to-soil contact. Clover seeds are small and need direct contact with soil to germinate—they should not be buried deeply. Spread seed evenly across your lawn using a broadcast spreader (similar to a fertilizer spreader) for large areas, or by hand for small spaces. After spreading seed, lightly rake the area to work seeds into the top quarter-inch of soil. Don't bury clover seed deeper than this, as it won't germinate properly.

After planting, water the area gently but thoroughly. Keep the seedbed consistently moist for the first 2 to 3 weeks while seeds germinate and seedlings establish. During dry periods, you may need to water lightly every 1 to 2 days. Once seedlings have several true leaves and the plants appear established (typically 3 to 4 weeks after planting), you can reduce watering frequency. At this point, clover's drought tolerance becomes an advantage—established plants need water only during extended dry periods.

Practical takeaway: Mark your calendar for the ideal planting window in your region. Prepare your seedbed the day before planting to allow soil to settle slightly. If weather forecasts show rain within a few days of your planned planting date, delay planting slightly—rain will handle initial watering better than you can. Avoid walking on the newly seeded area for at least the first month to prevent compaction that disrupts seed-to-soil contact.

Managing Your New Clover Lawn

The first-year management of a clover lawn differs somewhat from established lawn care. Young clover plants are sensitive to competition from weeds and existing grass, so regular monitoring during the establishment period is important. If you notice significant weed growth or surviving grass species taking over areas, you may need to manually remove weeds or spot-treat with herbicide following label directions. Most clover-specific herbicides are selective, meaning they target broad-leaved weeds without harming clover. Always read labels carefully and follow safety instructions.
