Learn How to Pay Your Indiana Power and Light Bill

Understanding Indiana Power and Light Company Services

Indiana Power and Light Company, commonly called IPL, is one of the largest electric utilities serving Indiana. The company provides electricity to approximately 490,000 customers across central and southern Indiana, covering areas including Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Kokomo. IPL operates as a subsidiary of Duke Energy, one of the largest utility companies in the United States.

IPL delivers power through an extensive network of transmission lines, distribution poles, and underground cables. The company maintains responsibility for meter reading, billing, customer service, and maintaining the electrical infrastructure that brings power to homes and businesses. Understanding how IPL operates helps customers recognize what services they provide and how billing works.

The company offers several rate structures depending on customer type. Residential customers typically pay based on a tiered rate system that may vary by season and time of use. Commercial and industrial customers have different rate structures designed around their specific usage patterns. IPL publishes its current rates on its website, and these rates change periodically with regulatory approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

IPL bills customers monthly, though the specific billing date varies based on when your meter is scheduled for reading. Most customers receive bills between the 1st and 25th of each month. Your bill shows your current charges, previous balance information, and payment options. Understanding the components of your bill—such as generation charges, delivery charges, and taxes—helps explain why amounts fluctuate monthly.

Practical Takeaway: Review your first bill from IPL carefully to understand the different charges included. Contact IPL's customer service at 1-800-339-1737 if any line items on your bill seem unclear.

Payment Methods Available for IPL Customers

IPL provides multiple payment methods to give customers flexibility in how they pay their bills. Understanding these options helps you choose the method that works best for your situation and financial preferences.

Online payment represents one of the most convenient options for many customers. Through IPL's website at www.iplpower.com, you can log into your account and pay your bill using a debit card, credit card, or bank account. Online payments typically process within one business day, though the company recommends submitting payments at least three business days before the due date to avoid late fees. This method is available 24/7 and requires no phone call or in-person visit.

Automatic payment arrangements, also called autopay or recurring payments, allow you to authorize IPL to withdraw your bill amount directly from your bank account each billing cycle. Setting up autopay typically requires providing your bank account information once through the website or by phone. This method eliminates the need to remember your due date each month and prevents accidental late payments. You can modify or cancel autopay at any time, and you receive email confirmation of each automatic withdrawal.

Phone payment is another option for customers who prefer speaking with someone or who lack online access. By calling IPL's automated payment line at 1-800-339-1737, you can pay using a debit card or credit card over the phone. A representative can also help if you need to discuss your bill or set up payment arrangements. Phone payments also typically process within one business day.

Mail payment remains available for customers who prefer sending a check or money order. Address your payment to the address shown on your bill, and include your account number on the check. Mail payments take longer to process than online or phone payments—typically 7-10 business days depending on postal service. Write the payment in the envelope before the due date shown on your bill to avoid late fees, since processing time is measured from when IPL receives the payment, not when you mail it.

In-person payment at authorized payment locations provides another option. IPL has payment kiosks and partner locations throughout its service area where you can pay in person using cash, check, or card. These locations vary by region, and you can find local payment centers through IPL's website or by calling customer service.

Practical Takeaway: Set up autopay if you want to avoid remembering due dates. If you prefer to pay manually, set a phone reminder three business days before your due date to mail your payment or pay online, ensuring it reaches IPL on time.

Understanding Your Bill and Payment Due Dates

Your IPL bill contains several important pieces of information beyond just the amount due. Learning to read your bill helps you track your usage, understand your charges, and identify any unusual activity on your account.

The bill header displays your account number, billing address, and service address. Your account number appears on every piece of correspondence from IPL and should be referenced with any questions or when making payments. The service address is where you actually receive electricity, which may differ from your billing address if you have mail sent elsewhere.

The bill shows your current billing period dates and the meter reading dates. IPL reads most meters monthly, though some areas use estimated readings. Your bill displays the previous meter reading, current meter reading, and the kilowatt-hours (kWh) you used during that period. One kWh equals 1,000 watt-hours of electricity. Comparing your usage month-to-month helps identify unusual spikes that might indicate an appliance problem or changed usage habits.

Charges on your bill break down into several categories. Generation and fuel charges represent the cost of producing the electricity you used. Delivery charges cover the cost of maintaining the transmission and distribution system that brings power to your home. Public benefits surcharges support low-income assistance programs and energy efficiency initiatives. Taxes are calculated on the total charges. All these components combine to create your total amount due.

The due date appears prominently on your bill, typically 21-25 days after the bill date. Payment is considered on time if received by this date. IPL charges a late fee if payment arrives after the due date, typically around $15-20 depending on your bill amount. The due date gives you several weeks to arrange payment, so planning ahead prevents unnecessary fees.

Some bills include notices about budget billing or other special programs. Budget billing averages your annual costs and charges you the same amount each month, eliminating the high bills of summer or winter. This program may be noted on your bill if you have enrolled.

Your bill also contains contact information for questions and a breakdown of how to interpret different sections. The back of the bill typically includes resources and information about payment options, budget billing, and customer service contact numbers.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your bills for at least 12 months to track seasonal usage patterns. If your usage suddenly spikes, compare it to the previous year's same month to determine if the increase is typical or unusual.

IPL offers payment arrangements for customers who cannot pay their full bill by the due date. These arrangements allow you to pay your bill over several weeks or months rather than in one lump sum. To set up a payment arrangement, contact IPL's customer service department at 1-800-339-1737 and speak with a representative about your situation. Payment arrangements typically require you to pay a portion of your bill by a specific date and the remainder by another date. IPL generally does not charge additional fees for payment arrangements, though you should confirm the terms before agreeing.

Customers experiencing financial hardship may have information about programs designed to help with utility bills. Indiana has several programs, including the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides bill payment assistance to qualifying households. While this guide does not provide information about program criteria, you can contact your local Community Action Agency or 211 Indiana (dial 211 from any phone) for information about these programs. IPL's customer service representatives can also provide referrals to community resources.

Shutoff protection is an important right for Indiana utility customers. Indiana law requires utility companies to follow specific procedures before disconnecting service. IPL must provide written notice of potential disconnection at least 10 days in advance, except in cases of theft or tampering. If you receive a shutoff notice, contacting IPL immediately to discuss a payment arrangement or other options may prevent service interruption.

Customers with medical conditions or dependent family members should inform IPL if disconnection would create a hardship. While this does not prevent disconnection indefinitely, it may extend the time available to arrange payment or connect with assistance programs. IPL has a medical certification process for customers whose health conditions
