Learn How to Pay Your Broward County Water Bill

Understanding Broward County Water Billing Basics

Broward County residents receive water service through the Broward County Water and Wastewater Services Department, which serves over 1.6 million people across the county. Your water bill includes charges for potable water (drinking water), wastewater treatment, and stormwater management. These three components work together to provide safe drinking water to your home and remove used water through treatment facilities.

Water bills in Broward County are typically issued monthly, with bills arriving either by mail or through electronic notification, depending on your account setup. The bill displays your meter reading, which measures how much water your household used during the billing period. Your meter is usually located in a box in your front yard or near your property line. Understanding how these readings are taken and calculated helps you comprehend why your bill amounts change from month to month.

Most Broward County water bills follow a tiered rate structure, meaning you pay different rates depending on how much water you use. The more water you consume, the higher your per-unit rate becomes. This structure encourages conservation while ensuring that essential water needs remain affordable for all residents. A typical household in South Florida uses between 6,000 to 8,000 gallons per month, though usage varies based on family size, outdoor irrigation, and seasonal changes.

Your bill also may include additional charges or credits. These might consist of fees for services like reconnection after a payment interruption, credits for water main breaks that affected your property, or charges for permits related to water usage. Reading through your entire bill helps you identify all components of your charges and spot any unusual fees that warrant investigation.

Practical Takeaway: Gather a recent water bill and locate the meter reading section. This number shows how many gallons of water were used during your billing period. Keep at least one bill as a reference document so you can compare future bills and notice any significant changes in your usage or charges.

Online Payment Options Through Broward County

The primary way to pay your Broward County water bill online is through the official Broward County website. The Water and Wastewater Services Department operates a customer portal where you can create an account, view your billing history, and submit payments electronically. To access this portal, visit the Broward County website and look for the water utility section. You will need your account number, which appears on your water bill, to set up your online account.

Once you create an online account, you can pay your bill using several methods. Most residents use a bank account (checking or savings) to pay through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) system, which is secure and typically processes within one to two business days. Credit and debit card payments are also accepted, though the county charges a convenience fee for this option—usually between 2 to 3 percent of your payment amount. This fee covers the cost that payment processors charge the county to handle card transactions.

The online payment system allows you to schedule future payments in advance. This feature is particularly useful if you want to ensure your bill is paid by a specific date without having to remember to pay each month. You can set up a one-time payment or recurring automatic payments. If you choose automatic payments, your account will be charged on the same date each month, so your bill never goes unpaid due to forgetfulness.

The online portal also provides detailed information about your account. You can view your current balance, review previous bills going back several years, and check your payment history. This information is valuable if you need documentation of payments for legal or personal reasons. The system typically shows payments within 24 hours of processing, though some delays may occur depending on your bank or the payment method used.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the Broward County Water and Wastewater Services website today to explore the online payment portal. Note your account number from your latest bill, and spend 10 minutes creating an online account. Bookmarking this portal in your browser makes future payments quicker.

Mail and Phone Payment Methods

Many Broward County residents prefer traditional payment methods like mailing a check. To pay by mail, write a check payable to "Broward County" and mail it to the address printed on your water bill. This address appears in the bottom section of your bill, usually labeled as the payment mailing address. Include your account number on the check to ensure your payment is credited correctly. The U.S. Postal Service typically takes 5 to 7 business days to deliver mail, so plan ahead to avoid late payment fees if your bill's due date is approaching.

Payment by phone is another option for residents who prefer speaking with a customer service representative. You can call the Broward County Water and Wastewater Services Department phone line to make a payment over the telephone. A representative will guide you through the process and accept payment information directly. The phone number for customer service appears on your water bill. This method is convenient for those without internet access or who have questions about their bill that they want answered while paying.

When paying by phone or mail, you have fewer immediate transaction confirmations compared to online payments. For phone payments, ask the representative for a confirmation number before ending the call. For mailed checks, keep a photo or copy of your check for your records. Some people use online banking to mail payments directly from their bank account, which provides a tracking number showing when the payment was sent and received.

Both mail and phone payments may take longer to process than online payments. It can take 7 to 10 business days for a mailed check to clear your account after the post office delivers it. During this waiting period, your payment status may show as pending rather than completed. If your due date is soon, paying online or by phone produces faster confirmation of payment and reduces the risk of late fees.

Practical Takeaway: If you prefer not to pay online, locate the payment mailing address on your current bill and write it down or bookmark it. Keep that information in a file with your other household bills so you can reference it quickly each month.

In-Person Payment Locations and Walk-In Options

Broward County residents may pay their water bills in person at several locations throughout the county. The main office for Water and Wastewater Services is located in Fort Lauderdale and accepts walk-in payments during regular business hours. This office is open Monday through Friday, typically from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Payment locations may also exist at other county service centers or partner locations, though specific addresses and hours vary. Check the Broward County website or call customer service to confirm current in-person payment locations near your home.

Walk-in payment offices accept payment by cash, check, and debit card. Some locations may also accept credit cards, though again, a convenience fee typically applies. If you pay in cash, request a receipt immediately. The receipt shows the date, amount paid, and your account number, serving as proof of payment. Many residents prefer in-person payment when they have large balances or irregular payment schedules because they receive immediate confirmation.

In-person payment locations also provide an opportunity to discuss questions about your bill with a representative face-to-face. If you notice unusual charges, have questions about your water usage, or need information about payment arrangements, visiting an office allows you to speak with staff who can explain your bill and explore solutions. Some situations, such as requesting a payment plan due to financial hardship, may require speaking with an account manager in person.

If you live or work near a payment location, in-person payments can be quick and convenient. However, for those without nearby offices or limited business hours availability, online or phone payment options may be more practical. Additionally, during busy times like end-of-month periods, walk-in offices may have longer wait times, so consider this when planning your visit.

Practical Takeaway: Search online for "Broward County Water payment locations near me" to find the closest office to your home or workplace. Note the hours of operation and plan to visit when it is convenient for your schedule. Keep the office address and phone number with your other bill payment information.

Understanding Due Dates, Late Fees, and Payment Plans

Broward County water bills have a specific due date, printed on each bill statement. This date is typically 20 to 25 days after the bill is issued. Paying by the due date keeps your account in good standing and avoids penalties. If payment is not received by the due date, the county charges a late fee. Late fees in Broward County are typically a percentage of your bill amount or a flat fee, wh
