Learn How to Pay Tolls in Colorado

Understanding Colorado's Toll Road System

Colorado operates several toll roads managed by different agencies and private companies. The most well-known toll road is Interstate 25 through Denver, which features express lanes that charge variable tolls depending on traffic conditions. Other major toll roads include U.S. Highway 36 between Boulder and Denver, Interstate 270, and Colorado Highway 470. Each road has its own toll structure and payment methods, so understanding which roads require tolls in your area is the first step to paying them correctly.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) oversees most state toll roads, while some corridors are managed through public-private partnerships. The E-470 toll road, which forms a northeastern loop around the Denver metro area, operates independently and has its own payment system. Understanding which agency manages the toll road you'll be using helps you know where to get payment information and which tag or account system to use.

Toll amounts in Colorado vary based on several factors. On express lanes like those on I-25, tolls change throughout the day—they're higher during peak traffic times (typically 6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays) and lower during off-peak hours. Standard toll roads like E-470 charge fixed rates based on your vehicle type and the distance traveled. A single trip on E-470 might cost between $1.50 and $5.00 depending on your entry and exit points.

Practical takeaway: Before traveling on Colorado toll roads, identify which specific roads you'll use and check the managing agency's website for current toll rates and payment options. This preparation prevents surprises at toll plazas.

Setting Up a Prepaid Toll Account

The most convenient way to pay tolls in Colorado is through a prepaid account system. For CDOT toll roads and express lanes, you can open an account through the myRCTD online portal (myRCTD.com). This system allows you to preload money onto your account, which is then deducted as you drive through toll points. For E-470 roads, you'll set up a separate account through the E-470 Public Highway Authority website (e-470.org).

Opening a prepaid account typically requires basic information: your name, address, email address, and phone number. You'll also need to provide vehicle information, including your license plate number and vehicle type (car, truck, motorcycle, etc). The system uses cameras to read your license plate as you pass through toll points, automatically deducting the toll from your account. Most systems take 24 to 48 hours to activate after you've created your account.

You can fund your account through several methods: credit card, debit card, or bank account transfer. Most Colorado toll operators recommend maintaining a balance of at least $25 to $50 in your account to ensure you don't accidentally incur violations for insufficient funds. When your balance drops below a certain threshold (usually $10), the system sends you an email notification asking you to add more money. You can set up automatic replenishment, so funds are added to your account when the balance drops below your chosen amount.

If you're visiting Colorado temporarily or renting a vehicle, you don't necessarily need to set up an account before driving on toll roads. However, if you don't pay tolls within a certain timeframe (typically 30 to 45 days), you may receive a violation notice in the mail. Setting up an account before your trip ensures smooth travel and avoids potential fees.

Practical takeaway: Create your toll account online at least two days before you plan to use toll roads. This gives the system time to activate and link your vehicle to the account.

Using Toll Tags and Transponders

In addition to prepaid accounts, Colorado offers physical toll tags that you mount on your vehicle's windshield or dashboard. These tags are small electronic devices that communicate with toll collection equipment as you pass through toll points. The myRCTD system offers a tag called the "myRCTD Tag" that works on all CDOT toll roads and express lanes across Colorado. E-470 also provides its own tag system for vehicles regularly using their toll roads.

Toll tags provide several advantages over license plate-based payment systems. First, they're recognized more reliably by toll collection equipment, reducing the chance of missed or incorrect toll readings. Second, some tag systems offer discounts compared to paying tolls through license plate recognition alone. Third, tags allow faster processing at toll plazas with dedicated tag lanes, which can be helpful when tolls are collected at physical booths rather than electronically.

To obtain a toll tag, you'll order it through the same account portal where you set up your prepaid account. Most tags cost between $5 and $15 and are mailed to you within 5 to 10 business days. Once you receive the tag, you'll mount it according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically placing it on your front windshield in a specific location where cameras can read it. Many toll operators recommend placing the tag behind your rearview mirror to minimize sun glare interference.

If you have multiple vehicles, you can register all of them to a single account or create separate accounts for each vehicle. Some people prefer to use tags on their primary vehicle and license plate payment on their secondary vehicle. Tags can be transferred between vehicles if needed, and you can order replacement tags if one becomes damaged or stops working.

Practical takeaway: If you regularly use Colorado toll roads, purchasing a toll tag reduces transaction issues and may save money through tag discounts. Order your tag when you open your prepaid account to have it ready for your first trip.

Understanding Toll Collection Technology and Methods

Colorado's toll collection systems use several technologies depending on the road and payment method. All-electronic toll collection, also called open-road tolling, allows drivers to pass through toll collection points at full highway speeds without stopping. Overhead gantries—frame structures spanning the highway—are equipped with cameras and electronic readers that capture information about your vehicle as you pass underneath.

License plate recognition technology reads your vehicle's plate number, and that information is matched against your prepaid account or toll tag. The system captures images from multiple angles to ensure accurate reading even if your plate is partially obscured. If your account is active and has sufficient funds, the toll is deducted immediately and your vehicle is allowed to proceed. This technology works in all weather conditions, including heavy snow and rain, though extremely poor visibility may occasionally require manual processing.

Toll tag readers operate on radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology. When you drive through a toll point with an active tag, the overhead reader communicates with your tag and instantly identifies your account. This method has a higher success rate than license plate recognition because tags are specifically designed for toll collection and have minimal interference issues. Some toll operators report 99.5% read accuracy with tag systems compared to 95-97% for license plate recognition alone.

E-470 uses a hybrid system that reads both license plates and toll tags. The system prioritizes tag reads when both are present, meaning if you have an E-470 tag, the system will charge your tag account first. If a tag isn't present, the license plate is read and the toll is charged to any associated prepaid account.

Practical takeaway: Understand which technology your toll system uses so you can maintain your account and vehicle registration accordingly. Keep your account active and funded to prevent toll violations even when using license plate recognition.

Handling Toll Violations and Disputes

Despite the efficiency of Colorado's toll systems, violations can occur. A toll violation happens when you drive through a toll point without an active prepaid account, sufficient account balance, or a working toll tag. When a violation is detected, your vehicle information is recorded, and a notice is typically mailed to the vehicle's registered owner within 30 to 45 days.

Toll violation notices include the toll amount owed plus an administrative penalty, typically ranging from $15 to $25 depending on the toll operator. If you receive a violation notice, you have options for resolving it. You can pay the toll and penalty through the toll operator's website or by mail. You can also dispute the violation if you believe an error occurred—for example, if your prepaid account was active when you passed through the toll point, or if the vehicle was misidentified.

To dispute a violation, contact the toll operator within the timeframe specified in the violation notice (usually 30 days). Provide documentation showing your account was active, your tag was properly installed, or that
