Learn How to Make Bird Feeders at Home

Understanding Different Types of Bird Feeders

Bird feeders come in many shapes and sizes, each designed to attract different bird species and hold various types of food. Before you start building, it helps to understand what's available so you can choose a design that works for your yard and the birds you want to see.

Tube feeders are cylindrical containers with multiple small ports where birds perch and eat. These feeders work well for holding nyjer seed, sunflower seeds, or mixed seed. They typically have a capacity of 1 to 2 pounds of seed and can be made from clear plastic tubing, PVC pipe, or recycled plastic bottles. Tube feeders protect seeds from weather and allow you to see when refilling is needed.

Platform feeders are flat trays that hold seed in an open design. These feeders attract a wide variety of birds, including cardinals, jays, and finches. You can build platform feeders from wood or recycled materials, and they can range from small individual feeders to large trays that hold several pounds of seed. The open design makes them easy to fill and clean, though seeds can scatter in wind.

Suet feeders hold high-fat cakes that provide energy, especially important during cold months. These feeders can be made from wire cages, mesh bags, or wooden frames. Suet attracts woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, and other insect-eating birds. Homemade suet feeders are among the simplest to construct.

Hummingbird feeders store sugar water and have small ports for birds to drink from. These feeders require more frequent cleaning and refilling than seed feeders but attract hummingbirds and orioles. You can make effective hummingbird feeders from glass bottles, test tubes, or small containers with proper feeding ports.

Practical takeaway: Before building, decide which birds you want to attract and what food types they prefer. Research native bird species in your area—your local Audubon Society or birding group can provide lists of which birds are common and what they eat.

Gathering Materials and Tools

One advantage of making bird feeders at home is that you can use materials you already have or find inexpensively. Most homemade feeders require only basic tools and common household items. You don't need expensive equipment or specialized skills to create functional feeders.

Common materials for basic feeders include untreated wood (pine, cedar, or scrap wood), plastic bottles and containers, PVC pipe, wire mesh, recycled tin cans, and natural materials like pinecones and tree branches. Wood should be untreated to avoid toxins that could harm birds. Avoid pressure-treated wood and wood with varnish or stain, as these coatings contain chemicals.

For materials that hold food directly, use food-grade containers or natural items that won't break down and contaminate food. Plastic yogurt containers, milk jugs, and takeout containers work well. Glass bottles are excellent for hummingbird feeders because they're transparent, durable, and easy to clean.

Essential tools for most projects include a drill with bits, saw, sandpaper, measuring tape, pencil, scissors, and basic screwdrivers. Many feeders can be made with just a utility knife and drill. If you don't own these tools, you might borrow from friends or use community workshops where tools are available.

Fastening materials include stainless steel or galvanized screws and nails (which won't rust), wood glue, and wire. Avoid regular steel fasteners that rust and create stains on wood. Small hinges, carabiners, and rope are useful for hanging feeders and accessing seed compartments.

Practical takeaway: Before buying anything, take inventory of materials you have at home. Collect plastic bottles, containers, and wood scraps. This approach saves money and gives old materials new purpose.

Building a Simple Wooden Platform Feeder

A platform feeder is an excellent starting project because it requires minimal materials and basic construction skills. This style of feeder attracts diverse bird species and works well in yards of any size. A basic platform feeder can be built in an afternoon with just a few pieces of wood.

Start with untreated wood pieces: one board for the base (about 8 inches by 10 inches), four pieces for the frame sides (1 inch by 2 inches, about 8-10 inches long), and one or two pieces for roof supports if you want weather protection. Assemble the base frame by attaching the side pieces to the base board using wood glue and stainless steel screws. Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.

Add drainage holes in the base by drilling several 3/8-inch holes near the corners. These holes prevent water from pooling and rotting the wood. Space holes about 1 inch from edges. If rain concerns you, build a simple roof by attaching two slanted boards above the platform. The roof protects seed from precipitation while allowing air circulation.

For hanging hardware, install eye hooks or screw hangers at the top center of your feeder or drill holes through the side boards to pass rope or wire. Use galvanized or stainless steel hardware that won't rust. Test that your mounting hardware can support the weight of full seed plus rain-soaked wood.

Sand all wood surfaces smooth to prevent splinters. Paint is optional—natural wood works fine. If you paint, use outdoor, non-toxic paint. Many people prefer leaving wood unpainted so birds and wildlife aren't exposed to paint fumes or peeling chips.

Practical takeaway: Start with this basic design, then modify it based on what you learn. You might add a second platform above the first, create a roof, or adjust dimensions based on your available space.

Creating a Bottle-Based Tube Feeder

Bottle feeders are among the easiest and least expensive feeders to make. An empty plastic bottle transforms into a functional feeder that holds seed for weeks. This design works particularly well for small seeds like nyjer or finch mix, though you can modify it for other seed types.

Begin with a clean plastic bottle (2-liter soda bottles work well) and two wooden dowels or branches about the diameter of a pencil. Drill holes through opposite sides of the bottle about 1 inch from the bottom, inserting dowels through to create perches. The dowels should stick out 1-2 inches on each side. Birds land on the dowels and eat from ports above.

Create feeding ports by drilling small holes (approximately 3/16 inch diameter) just above each perch. Make four to six ports around the bottle, spacing them evenly. Larger holes (1/4 inch) work for sunflower seeds; smaller holes prevent larger seeds from falling out. You can alternatively use a sharp utility knife to cut small X-shaped slits instead of drilling.

Fill the bottle with seed through the open top. As birds eat, more seed flows down to the ports due to gravity. Hang your feeder from a tree branch or shepherd's hook using string, twine, or a hook through the bottle's handle or cap. Position the feeder 5-6 feet high where birds can see approaching predators.

These feeders require minimal maintenance—simply refill with fresh seed when empty and rinse the bottle periodically. If interior mold develops, create a cleaning solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, pour into the bottle, shake vigorously, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Practical takeaway: Make several bottle feeders at once. Rotate them between your yard and your cleaning/storage area so birds always have access while you maintain supplies.

Making Suet and Fat Feeders

Suet feeders attract woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, and other birds that eat insects. You can buy ready-made suet cakes or make your own, but even store-bought suet needs a proper feeder for hanging and serving. Homemade suet feeders are simple to construct and quite durable.

A basic wire cage feeder can be made from hardware cloth or wire mesh. Cut a piece of mesh approximately 6 inches by 8 inches, fold it into a tube shape, and fasten the edges by twisting wire together or using small
