Learn How to Make Beetroot Juice at Home

Understanding Beetroot and Its Nutritional Profile

Beetroot, also known as beet, is a root vegetable that has been used for centuries in cooking and traditional wellness practices. The vegetable is deep red or purple in color due to a natural pigment called betalain. When you make beetroot juice at home, you extract these nutrients in concentrated form, making them easier for your body to absorb quickly.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a cup of raw beetroot contains approximately 58 calories, 13 grams of carbohydrates, and 2.2 grams of fiber. Beetroot also contains folate, which plays a role in cell function and DNA synthesis. One medium beetroot (about 100 grams) provides roughly 20 percent of the daily recommended value of folate. The vegetable also contains manganese, potassium, and vitamin C.

The betalain pigments in beetroot have been studied by researchers interested in plant compounds. Studies published in journals like Nutrients have explored how these compounds may interact with various body systems. Beetroot juice contains nitrates, which are naturally occurring compounds that your body converts to nitric oxide. This conversion process happens in your digestive system and blood vessels.

Beyond the nutritional content, beetroot has a distinctive earthy flavor that some people enjoy and others find strong. When you juice beetroot at home, you can control the flavor intensity and combine it with other ingredients to create a taste that works for you. Understanding what's in beetroot helps you decide whether homemade beetroot juice fits into your dietary preferences.

Practical takeaway: Familiarize yourself with beetroot's basic nutrition profile before juicing. This knowledge helps you understand what nutrients you're consuming and how much juice might fit into your daily routine.

Selecting and Preparing Beetroot for Juicing

The quality of your beetroot juice starts with choosing the right beets. When shopping, look for beetroots that are firm and feel heavy for their size. A good beetroot should have minimal soft spots, wrinkles, or blemishes. Smaller to medium-sized beets tend to be more tender than very large ones. The skin should be relatively smooth, though some surface irregularities are normal. You can find fresh beetroot in the produce section of most grocery stores year-round, though they're most abundant from June through October in North America.

When you get home, store whole, unwashed beetroots in the refrigerator crisper drawer. They can last two to three weeks when stored this way. If your beetroots have greens attached, you can remove them before storage, as the greens will draw moisture from the root. Don't throw away the greens—they're edible and nutritious if you want to use them in salads or other dishes.

Before juicing, wash your beetroots under cool running water. Use a vegetable brush to scrub away any dirt clinging to the skin. Pat them dry with a clean towel. Next, trim off both the top and bottom ends using a sharp knife. You can peel the beetroot before or after juicing, depending on your juicer type and personal preference. If you peel beforehand, use a vegetable peeler or knife to remove the thin outer skin. Note that beetroot juice stains easily, so wear an apron or old clothes during this process, and be careful not to get the juice on light-colored surfaces or fabrics.

Cut your prepared beetroots into chunks that fit into your juicer's feeding chute. The size depends on your specific juicer model—check your appliance's manual for recommended piece dimensions. Smaller chunks generally feed more smoothly through most juicers.

Practical takeaway: Purchase firm beetroots without major blemishes and store them in the refrigerator. Wash and trim them carefully before juicing, and wear protective clothing since beetroot stains.

Choosing the Right Juicer and Juicing Methods

Several types of juicers work for beetroot juice, and each has different characteristics. Centrifugal juicers are the fastest and least expensive option. They work by spinning at high speeds to separate juice from pulp. Models like the Hamilton Beach or Breville spin at speeds between 10,000 and 15,000 RPM. These juicers produce results in seconds, making them convenient for quick juice preparation. However, the high-speed spinning can introduce air, which may cause oxidation and affect how long the juice stays fresh.

Masticating juicers, also called cold-press or slow juicers, operate at much lower speeds—typically between 40 and 100 RPM. They work by crushing and pressing vegetables rather than spinning them. This method extracts juice more slowly but produces juice with less oxidation and longer shelf life. Brands like Hurom and Omega make popular masticating juicers. These machines typically cost more than centrifugal models but may yield more juice from the same amount of produce.

Twin-gear juicers represent another cold-press option. They use two interlocking gears that rotate slowly to crush vegetables. These juicers are highly effective for leafy greens but also work well with beetroot. They're often considered the most durable long-term investment but also tend to be the most expensive option.

If you don't own a juicer, you can still make beetroot juice using alternative methods. A high-powered blender can pulverize beetroot into a liquid that you then strain through cheesecloth, a fine-mesh strainer, or a nut milk bag. This method requires more hands-on work but produces results. Some people use a food processor followed by manual pressing through cloth. Another option is to grate beetroot finely and press it through cheesecloth by hand or with a spoon.

For your first time making beetroot juice, consider what equipment you already own and how much time you want to spend. A centrifugal juicer requires the least preparation and cleanup but produces juice best consumed immediately. A masticating juicer takes longer but produces juice that lasts several days refrigerated.

Practical takeaway: Match your juicer choice to your lifestyle. If speed matters most, choose a centrifugal juicer. If you prefer juice that lasts longer, invest in a cold-press model. Both produce nutritious beetroot juice.

Step-by-Step Juicing Process and Techniques

Once you have your equipment ready, the juicing process itself is straightforward. Start by setting up your juicer according to its manual instructions. Place a container or glass under the juice spout to catch the juice. If your juicer has a pulp container, make sure it's properly installed. Some models work better with a bowl placed underneath to catch both juice and pulp.

Begin with one small beetroot to learn how your specific juicer handles it. Feed the beetroot chunks slowly into the feeding chute, using the pusher tool if your juicer provides one. Never force beetroot through—let the juicer do the work at its own pace. If you're using a centrifugal juicer, you'll hear the motor speed up as the vegetable enters. Continue feeding beetroot chunks at a steady, even pace. A typical medium beetroot produces roughly one-third to one-half cup of juice, depending on juicer type and beetroot water content.

If you want to combine beetroot with other ingredients, add them as you go. Many people juice beetroot with carrots, apples, or ginger. If you're using a combination, alternate between ingredients or follow a pattern that works for your juicer. For example, you might feed one beetroot chunk, then one apple chunk, then another beetroot chunk. This alternation can help push ingredients through more smoothly, particularly with masticating juicers.

Once you've finished juicing all your beetroot, turn off the machine and wait a moment for any juice to drip from the spout. If your juicer produced a lot of pulp, you can sometimes run the pulp back through the machine for additional juice extraction, though results vary by machine type.

For blender or food processor methods, blend your beetroot chunks with a small amount of water—about one-quarter cup per beetroot—until completely smooth. Then pour the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine strainer, pressing gently with a spoon to extract the liquid. This manual method takes
