Learn How to Make a Shirley Temple Drink

What Is a Shirley Temple and Its History

A Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic cocktail that has been a popular choice for children and non-drinkers since the 1930s. The drink is named after the famous child actress Shirley Temple, who was a major Hollywood star during that era. While there is some debate about the drink's exact origins, most beverage historians credit the creation of the Shirley Temple to bartenders working in restaurants and hotels during the early 20th century who wanted to create special drinks for young patrons and those who did not consume alcohol.

The classic Shirley Temple consists of a refreshing combination of grenadine syrup, ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, and a splash of orange juice, garnished with a maraschino cherry and often a slice of orange. The drink's popularity grew significantly during Prohibition in the United States (1920-1933), when bartenders needed to create appealing non-alcoholic options for customers. The name became officially associated with the drink during the 1930s when Shirley Temple was at the height of her acting career.

Today, the Shirley Temple remains a standard offering on children's menus and in bars around the world. The drink has inspired numerous variations and adaptations, with different regions and establishments adding their own twists to the original recipe. Some versions include fresh fruit juices, while others incorporate different soda options or additional garnishes. The drink's enduring popularity speaks to its appeal across generations, with many people who grew up enjoying Shirley Temples continuing to order them as adults.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the history and background of the Shirley Temple helps you appreciate why this drink remains a beloved classic. The drink's simplicity and versatility make it easy to recreate at home or order with confidence when dining out.

Gathering Your Ingredients and Tools

Making a Shirley Temple requires only a few basic ingredients that you likely already have at home or can find easily at any grocery store. The primary ingredients include grenadine syrup, ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, orange juice, and a maraschino cherry for garnish. Some recipes also call for a slice of orange or lemon. The beauty of this drink lies in its simplicity—you do not need any specialized or difficult-to-find ingredients to make a delicious version.

Grenadine syrup is the key ingredient that gives the Shirley Temple its distinctive red color and sweet flavor. This ingredient is made from pomegranate juice and sugar and can be found in the beverage section or bar supplies area of most grocery stores. If you cannot find grenadine, you can make a simple homemade version by combining pomegranate juice with sugar, though store-bought versions work perfectly well for most home bartenders.

For the soda component, you have options. Traditional recipes call for ginger ale, which provides a slightly spicy flavor, but lemon-lime soda like Sprite or 7UP works equally well and creates a slightly different taste profile. Some people prefer using club soda with a splash of lemon or lime juice for a less sweet version. Orange juice adds brightness and helps balance the sweetness of the grenadine. Fresh-squeezed orange juice will provide better flavor than concentrate, but either option works.

In terms of tools, you will need a basic cocktail glass or highball glass, a jigger or measuring cup for accurate portions, a long spoon for stirring, and optionally a cocktail shaker if you prefer to mix the drink in a shaker before pouring. A cutting board and knife for preparing orange slices are helpful if you want fresh fruit garnishes.

Practical Takeaway: Before you start making your Shirley Temple, do a quick inventory of what you have at home. Most households already possess the basic ingredients needed, making this drink one of the most affordable and accessible cocktails to prepare.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making a Classic Shirley Temple

Making a Shirley Temple follows a straightforward process that takes just a few minutes from start to finish. Begin by filling a highball glass or cocktail glass with ice cubes. You want enough ice to fill approximately three-quarters of the glass. The ice serves two purposes: it chills the drink and helps dilute the ingredients slightly as it melts, creating a more balanced flavor.

Next, pour approximately 0.5 ounces of grenadine syrup into the glass with the ice. If you do not have a jigger, a small shot glass or even a tablespoon works as a measuring tool—0.5 ounces is roughly equivalent to one tablespoon. The grenadine will sink to the bottom of the glass and create the drink's signature red color. This step is important because the layering effect of the grenadine creates the visual appeal of the drink.

Add 2 ounces of orange juice to the glass. You can pour this directly from a container or measure it with your jigger. The orange juice will begin to mix with the grenadine but will remain somewhat distinct due to the ice. Pour approximately 4 to 6 ounces of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda into the glass. The exact amount depends on the size of your glass and how strong you want the flavors to be—more soda creates a lighter, less sweet drink, while less soda keeps the flavors more concentrated.

Stir the drink gently with a long spoon to combine the ingredients. You do not need to stir vigorously, as this is not a drink that requires thorough mixing. A gentle stir for about 5 to 10 seconds allows the flavors to combine while maintaining some of the visual layering effect.

Finally, garnish your drink with a maraschino cherry and optionally an orange slice. Place the cherry at the bottom of a cocktail pick or simply drop it into the glass. If using an orange slice, cut a thin slice and place it on the rim of the glass or float it in the drink. Some people prefer to serve the drink with a straw.

Practical Takeaway: The entire process takes less than five minutes. Follow these steps in order, and you will create a drink that tastes professional and looks visually appealing, making it suitable for serving to guests or enjoying as a personal treat.

Understanding Flavor Variations and Customizations

While the classic Shirley Temple recipe is wonderful, you can explore numerous variations that maintain the drink's essential character while offering different flavor experiences. One popular variation is the Roy Rogers, which is essentially a Shirley Temple made with cola instead of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. This version provides a deeper, more robust flavor and creates a slightly different visual appearance due to the darker color of cola.

Another variation involves adding fresh fruit juices to customize the flavor profile. Some people add a splash of cranberry juice, which creates a deeper red color and adds a tart note to the drink. Pineapple juice can be substituted for or added to the orange juice, creating a tropical variation. Pomegranate juice is sometimes used instead of grenadine syrup, though this requires adding simple syrup separately to maintain proper sweetness.

For those who prefer less sweetness, you can reduce the amount of grenadine and increase the proportion of soda and orange juice. Conversely, if you enjoy sweeter drinks, you can add slightly more grenadine or incorporate a splash of simple syrup. Some bartenders add a small amount of lime juice to create a more complex flavor profile.

Fresh fruit can be used creatively as garnish and flavoring. Instead of just a maraschino cherry, you can add strawberries, raspberries, or pineapple chunks. Citrus slices—whether orange, lemon, or lime—can be cut into wheels or wedges and either floated in the drink or placed on the rim. Some recipes include a sprig of mint or other herbs for added aroma and flavor.

Temperature variations also matter. Some people prefer their Shirley Temple served over crushed ice instead of cubes, which creates a slightly different texture and allows for more dilution. Others freeze some of the orange juice into ice cubes beforehand, so the drink stays cold longer without becoming overly diluted.

Practical Takeaway: Do not feel restricted to the original recipe. Experiment with different soda options, juice combinations, and garnishes to discover variations that
