Learn How to Make a Beautiful Ribbon Wreath

Understanding Ribbon Wreath Basics and Materials

A ribbon wreath is a decorative circular arrangement made primarily from ribbons, often combined with other materials like foam bases, branches, or floral elements. These wreaths work well for decorating doors, walls, and windows throughout your home. The beauty of ribbon wreaths lies in their versatility—you can create designs for any season or occasion by simply changing the ribbon colors and styles.

The foundation of most ribbon wreaths starts with a base, typically made from foam, wire, or cardboard. Foam bases are popular because they hold materials firmly and come in various sizes, ranging from 12 inches to 24 inches in diameter. You can purchase these bases at craft stores, garden centers, or online retailers for between $3 and $15 depending on size and material quality.

Ribbon selection makes a significant difference in your final result. Several ribbon types work well for wreath-making:

• Satin ribbons offer a smooth, shiny finish and come in countless colors
• Burlap ribbons provide a rustic, natural appearance
• Grosgrain ribbons have a textured finish and hold their shape well
• Mesh ribbon creates an airy, dimensional look
• Wired ribbon allows you to shape loops and bows precisely

Most ribbon wreaths require 15 to 40 yards of ribbon total, depending on your base size and desired fullness. A standard 12-inch wreath typically uses about 20 yards of ribbon. When purchasing ribbon, look for widths between 1.5 and 3 inches for best visual impact.

Beyond ribbon and base, gather these additional materials: floral wire or hot glue gun with glue sticks, scissors, and optional embellishments like artificial flowers, berries, ornaments, or branches. Floral wire tends to be more secure than hot glue for heavy materials, while hot glue works faster for lighter decorations.

Practical takeaway: Start with a 12-inch foam base and purchase 20 yards of ribbon in your chosen colors. Budget approximately $15 to $30 for a basic wreath project before adding decorative elements.

Preparing Your Work Space and Gathering Tools

Creating a ribbon wreath requires an organized workspace where you can spread out materials and work comfortably for one to three hours. Choose a clean, flat surface like a dining table, craft table, or kitchen counter. Make sure you have adequate lighting—natural daylight combined with a desk lamp or overhead light helps you see ribbon colors and weaving patterns accurately.

Protect your work surface from potential damage. If using a hot glue gun, place a protective mat or old towel underneath to catch any stray glue. If you're using floral wire with wire cutters, cover the surface with newspaper to contain any small debris.

Essential tools for ribbon wreath making include:

• Sharp scissors or craft scissors for clean ribbon cuts
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks (or floral wire as an alternative)
• Wire cutters if using floral wire
• Ruler or measuring tape for consistent ribbon lengths
• Pencil or marker for marking measurements on ribbon
• Straight pins or floral pins to temporarily hold pieces in place
• Small bowl of water and paper towels for cleaning hands

If you're using a hot glue gun, test it on scrap material first to understand how much glue comes out and how long it takes to set. Most hot glue guns heat up in 3 to 5 minutes and create a strong bond within 30 seconds. Always allow the gun to cool completely before putting it away.

Organization matters when working with multiple ribbon types and colors. Lay ribbons out in the order you plan to use them, or wind them around cardboard spools to prevent tangling. Keep your foam base visible in the center of your workspace so you can reference it as you work.

Some crafters find it helpful to sketch their design on paper first—showing where each ribbon color or type will go on the wreath. This planning step takes only 5 minutes but can reduce mistakes and create a more cohesive final design.

Practical takeaway: Set up your workspace at least 30 minutes before starting. Test your hot glue gun on scrap material, lay out all ribbons in order, and keep your foam base visible as a reference point throughout the project.

Creating the Foundation Layer Using Basic Wrapping Technique

The foundation layer is the base covering that gives your wreath its structure and hides the foam. This layer typically uses one or two coordinating ribbon colors and covers the entire foam base. The wrapping technique is straightforward and suitable for beginners.

Start by cutting your ribbon into manageable lengths—approximately 2 to 3 feet per piece. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the foam base, press the ribbon end into it, and hold for 3 to 5 seconds until the glue sets. Begin wrapping the ribbon around the foam in a spiral pattern, working from the outside edge toward the inside.

As you wrap, overlap each ribbon layer slightly—about one-half inch of overlap works well. This overlap hides the foam and previous ribbon layers beneath. Apply a small glue dot every 4 to 6 inches along the spiral to keep the ribbon secure and prevent it from shifting.

The wrapping pattern you choose affects the final appearance. Three common patterns include:

• Spiral wrapping: Wrap around the foam continuously from outer edge to center, creating a swirled effect
• Vertical wrapping: Wrap up and down the wreath like longitude lines on a globe
• Horizontal wrapping: Wrap around the wreath in circular bands from top to bottom

Most crafters find spiral wrapping easiest for their first wreath. It requires less measuring and creates a natural-looking result. Each 12-inch wreath takes approximately 15 to 20 yards of ribbon using this method.

When you reach the center of the wreath, cut the ribbon and glue the end securely. Don't worry if small foam patches show through—you'll cover these with decorative elements later. This foundation layer typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

If your glue gun is not providing enough hold, consider using floral wire instead. Thread a needle or small tool through the ribbon, loop the wire around it, and twist the wire ends together at the back of the foam. This method takes longer but creates an extremely secure hold suitable for heavy wreaths or outdoor hanging.

Practical takeaway: Use spiral wrapping for your foundation layer, applying hot glue dots every 4 to 6 inches. Expect to spend 30 to 45 minutes on this stage, which covers the foam base and creates structure for your decorative elements.

Adding Loops and Bows for Dimension and Visual Interest

Loops and bows transform a flat ribbon wreath into a three-dimensional creation with depth and visual appeal. Loops create the characteristic full, abundant appearance that defines beautiful ribbon wreaths. These decorative elements stand out from the foundation and catch light, making your wreath more noticeable from a distance.

The basic loop technique involves folding ribbon into loops and securing them to the wreath base. Wired ribbon is ideal for loops because the wire holds the shape, but non-wired ribbon works too. Cut ribbon pieces approximately 6 to 8 inches long for standard loops, though you can vary sizes for visual interest.

To create a loop, follow these steps:

• Fold the ribbon piece in half to form a loop shape
• Bring the two ends together at the base of the loop
• Apply hot glue to the ends and press firmly into the foam base
• Hold for 5 seconds until secure

Create multiple loops—typically 20 to 40 loops depending on your wreath size and desired fullness. Distribute loops
