Learn How to Lock Photos on Your iPhone

Understanding iPhone Photo Lock Features

Apple's iPhone offers several built-in methods to protect photos from unauthorized viewing. These features work by restricting access to specific images or entire albums, requiring authentication before someone can view them. The lock mechanisms available on iPhones include the standard Photos app's Hide feature, the Locked Album function (available on iOS 16.1 and later), and third-party apps designed specifically for photo protection.

The Hide feature has existed for several years and allows you to remove photos from your main photo library and place them in a separate, hidden area. This method works across most iPhone models and iOS versions. The newer Locked Album feature provides an additional layer of security by requiring Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to view the hidden photos. Understanding the differences between these options helps you choose the method that best suits your privacy needs.

Apple designed these features recognizing that phones contain personal moments many people prefer to keep private. Whether you want to hide photos from family members, roommates, or simply organize your library differently, these tools provide straightforward solutions. The security level depends on which method you use and how strong your device authentication is set up.

Practical takeaway: Before locking photos, check your iOS version by going to Settings > General > About. This determines which photo-locking methods are available to you. iPhones running iOS 16.1 or later have more options than older versions.

Using the Hide Feature in the Photos App

The Hide feature is the most basic way to remove photos from your main library. When you hide a photo, it moves to a dedicated Hidden album that doesn't appear in your standard photo views, search results, or on your lock screen as a memory or featured photo. This method works on virtually all iPhone models and older iOS versions, making it widely accessible.

To hide a photo using this method, open the Photos app and locate the image you want to hide. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, then select "Hide" from the options that appear. The photo immediately disappears from your main library. You can hide multiple photos at once by tapping "Select," choosing multiple images, and then tapping the trash icon followed by "Hide Photo."

The hidden photos don't disappear from your iPhone entirely. They move to the Hidden album, which you can find at the bottom of your Albums tab in the Photos app. However, the Hidden album doesn't display in your standard album browsing unless you scroll to the very bottom of your albums list. This means most people using your phone won't stumble upon these photos by accident when browsing your library.

An important limitation of the Hide feature is that it requires only knowledge of where the Hidden album is located—there's no password or biometric protection required to view hidden photos. If someone knows to look in the Hidden album, they can view the photos without any additional authentication. For this reason, many users combine the Hide feature with other security methods for greater privacy.

Practical takeaway: Hide photos one at a time by tapping the three-dot menu, or select multiple photos and hide them together. Check that photos have moved to your Hidden album by going to Albums > scroll down > Hidden. If you change your mind, you can unhide photos using the same method.

Setting Up a Locked Album for Enhanced Security

iOS 16.1 introduced the Locked Album feature, which combines the hiding functionality with biometric or passcode protection. This provides significantly stronger privacy than the basic Hide feature because accessing the album requires Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode. The Locked Album appears in your album list but displays a lock icon, making it immediately clear that authentication is required to view its contents.

To create and use a Locked Album, first ensure your iPhone runs iOS 16.1 or later by checking Settings > General > About. Open the Photos app and select the images you want to lock. Tap "Select" in the top right, choose multiple photos, then tap "Add to" and select "New Locked Album." Your iPhone may prompt you to confirm your Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode. The selected photos move to this new locked album and remain hidden from your main library.

You can add photos to an existing Locked Album using the same process: select photos, tap "Add to," and choose the specific Locked Album where you want them stored. You can create multiple Locked Albums for different purposes, such as one for personal documents, another for family photos you want to protect, and another for any other purpose you choose.

Accessing a Locked Album requires authentication each time, even if you're already logged into your phone. This means even if someone has physical access to your unlocked iPhone, they cannot view Locked Album photos without providing the required biometric data or passcode. The Locked Album setting automatically protects photos from appearing in search results, memories, featured photos, or shared album suggestions.

Practical takeaway: When setting up a Locked Album, choose authentication method carefully. Face ID or Touch ID provides convenience and strong security, while passcode-only access works if biometrics aren't available. Test the locked album by navigating away and returning to verify the authentication requirement works as expected.

Managing and Organizing Your Locked Photos

Once photos are hidden or moved to a Locked Album, you can still organize and manage them like any other photos in your library. You can add locked photos to albums, create collections, edit them, share them with others (if you choose to), or delete them permanently. The lock or hidden status simply controls visibility and access, not the photos' functionality or usability.

You can move photos between albums by selecting them and using the "Add to Album" option. If you move a photo from your Locked Album to a regular album, it loses its lock protection and becomes visible in your main library again. Similarly, if you hide a photo and later decide you want it visible, you can unhide it by accessing the Hidden album, selecting the photo, tapping the three-dot menu, and choosing "Unhide." These actions are reversible, so you can adjust your privacy settings as your needs change.

Editing locked photos works the same way as editing standard photos. Open a locked photo, tap "Edit," and make adjustments using iPhone's built-in editing tools. These edits apply to the photo itself and are saved when you exit the editing interface. You can also adjust the lock or hidden status of individual photos or batches at any time without losing edits or other metadata like location data or photo date.

When you delete photos from a Locked Album or Hidden album, they move to your Recently Deleted folder (unless you permanently delete them immediately). Photos in Recently Deleted remain for 30 days before permanently disappearing from your device. This gives you time to recover photos if you accidentally delete them. After 30 days, they are permanently removed and cannot be recovered.

Practical takeaway: Keep track of your locked photos by periodically reviewing what's in your Locked Albums. Organize related photos into separate albums even within the locked section for easier management. Remember that moving photos to regular albums removes their lock protection.

Using Third-Party Apps for Additional Photo Protection

Beyond Apple's built-in features, numerous third-party apps in the App Store offer photo-locking functionality with varying security levels and features. These apps provide options ranging from simple PIN-protected galleries to heavily encrypted vaults with additional privacy features like fake password systems and decoy folders. Popular examples include Keepsafe, Vault, and Calculator+ (an app disguised as a calculator but functioning as a photo vault).

Third-party photo protection apps typically work by creating a separate secure space within the app itself, rather than locking photos within the standard Photos app. You import photos into these apps, and they remain locked behind the app's authentication system. Some apps use industry-standard encryption, while others employ proprietary security measures. Reading user reviews and checking the app's security documentation helps you understand what protection level each app provides.

Many third-party photo vaults include features beyond basic locking, such as cloud backup options, the ability to create fake folders with decoy content, password protection with multiple authentication options, or integration with cloud storage services. Some apps allow you to lock videos as well as photos, and others provide tools to securely delete photos to prevent recovery. These additional features may be valuable depending on your specific privacy needs and technical comfort level.

When choosing a third-party app, consider factors such as whether the app is actively maintained by its developer, whether user reviews indicate the security works as described, what types of authentication the app supports, and whether the app requires access to sensitive iPhone information
