Learn How to Link TSA PreCheck to Delta

Understanding TSA PreCheck and What It Offers

TSA PreCheck is a program that lets U.S. citizens and nationals move through airport security more quickly. When you have TSA PreCheck, you can go through a special security lane at participating airports instead of the standard line. The program covers more than 200 airports across the United States.

The main benefits of TSA PreCheck include not having to remove your shoes, belt, or light jacket during security screening. You can also keep your laptop and liquids in your carry-on bag instead of taking them out. These small changes can save you 5 to 10 minutes at security, which adds up if you travel frequently.

TSA PreCheck is run by the Transportation Security Administration, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. The program costs $78 to $85 for five years, depending on where you apply. Some credit cards and airline programs offer reimbursement for this fee as a cardholder benefit.

As of 2024, more than 12 million people hold active TSA PreCheck memberships. The program is different from Global Entry, which covers international travel, though Global Entry members also get TSA PreCheck benefits. TSA PreCheck works on domestic flights and does not give you expedited customs screening when returning to the United States.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding what TSA PreCheck includes and what it does not cover helps you decide if linking it to your Delta account makes sense for your travel patterns. Consider how often you fly and whether you use other airlines when thinking about the program.

How TSA PreCheck Connects to Airline Accounts Like Delta

Linking your TSA PreCheck to your Delta account means connecting your known traveler number (KTN) to your SkyMiles frequent flyer profile. This connection allows Delta's check-in systems to recognize that you have TSA PreCheck and automatically include this information when you book flights and check in.

When your TSA PreCheck is linked to Delta, the airline will print your TSA PreCheck indicator on your boarding pass. This indicator—usually a TSA PreCheck logo or special marking—tells security screeners at the checkpoint that you are enrolled in the program. Without this indicator on your boarding pass, screeners will not know you have TSA PreCheck, even if your membership is active.

Delta does not charge any fee for linking your TSA PreCheck to your SkyMiles account. This is a free service that the airline provides to help you get the most value from your TSA PreCheck membership. The process involves sharing your known traveler number with Delta's system.

Your known traveler number is a unique nine-character code assigned to you when you complete your TSA PreCheck process. This number stays the same for the five-year length of your membership. Delta uses this number to match your account with your TSA PreCheck record in the TSA's system.

When you fly on other airlines, you will need to link your TSA PreCheck to those airlines as well. Each airline maintains its own system for storing and displaying passenger information on boarding passes. Linking to Delta does not automatically link your TSA PreCheck to United, American, Southwest, or other carriers.

Practical Takeaway: Linking takes just a few minutes and requires only your known traveler number. Even if you have already finished your TSA PreCheck interview and received your membership, the link to Delta is a separate step that you need to complete.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Linking Through Delta's Website

To link your TSA PreCheck to Delta through the airline's website, you first need to sign into your SkyMiles account. Go to delta.com and click on "Log In" in the upper right corner. Enter your SkyMiles number or email address and your password. If you do not have a SkyMiles account, you can create one for free before proceeding.

Once you are logged in, look for the account settings or profile section. This is often found by clicking on your name in the upper right corner and selecting "My Profile" or "Account Settings." Different versions of the Delta website may have slightly different layouts, but there is usually a section labeled "Travel Information" or "Known Traveler Information."

In this section, look for a field or option to add your known traveler number. This may be labeled as "TSA PreCheck," "Known Traveler Number," or "KTN." Click on the option to add or update this information. You will see a box where you can type your nine-character known traveler number.

Enter your known traveler number exactly as it appears on your TSA PreCheck card or confirmation letter. Make sure you type all nine characters correctly, as even a single mistake will prevent the link from working. Your known traveler number typically starts with letters or numbers depending on the program you are in.

After entering your known traveler number, look for a "Save" or "Update" button. Click this button to submit your information. Delta's system will then connect your known traveler number to your SkyMiles profile. This process usually happens right away, though it may take a few minutes for the change to show up in all of Delta's systems.

Once the link is complete, you should see your known traveler number displayed in your profile information. You can verify this by checking your profile page again or by booking a test flight to see if the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on your boarding pass.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your known traveler number before you start this process. Having it in front of you prevents typing errors and makes the whole process faster. The entire step-by-step process usually takes less than five minutes.

Linking TSA PreCheck Through Delta's Mobile App

If you prefer to use your phone or tablet, you can link your TSA PreCheck through the Delta mobile app. Download the free Delta app from the Apple App Store if you use an iPhone or iPad, or from Google Play if you use an Android phone. Open the app and log in with your SkyMiles number and password.

Once you are logged into the Delta app, tap on the menu icon—usually three horizontal lines in the corner of your screen. Look for "My Profile," "Account," or "Settings." The exact wording depends on which version of the app you have. Tap on this option to view your profile information.

Inside your profile settings, look for a section about travel documents, known traveler information, or passport details. This section may be grouped together with other travel-related information. Tap on the option to add or edit your known traveler number.

Type your nine-character known traveler number into the field provided. Double-check that you have entered it correctly before saving. Once you have typed it in, look for a "Save," "Done," or "Submit" button and tap it.

The app will send your information to Delta's servers. This usually happens instantly, but it may take a few minutes for all systems to update. You can check if the update was successful by booking a test flight in the app. On the confirmation page or in your booking details, you should see your TSA PreCheck indicator if the link worked.

The Delta app is often faster and more convenient than using a web browser, especially if you travel frequently and already use the app to book flights or check in. Many travelers find it easier to manage their profile information through the app because it is designed for mobile phones and keeps everything in one place.

Practical Takeaway: Using the mobile app is just as effective as using the website. If you already have the Delta app installed and use it regularly, linking your TSA PreCheck through the app is a natural choice. You can also update your information the same way you would change other travel details in your profile.

Verifying Your Link and Troubleshooting Common Problems

After you link your TSA PreCheck to Delta, you should verify that the connection worked properly. The best way to do this is to book a flight—even a test booking you do not purchase—and check your boarding pass. When you view your confirmation or boarding pass, look for a "TSA PreCheck" indicator or logo. If you see this indicator, your link was successful.
