Learn How to Grow Onions From Seed or Sets

Understanding Onion Growing Basics

Onions are one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow in a home garden, and they work well in nearly every climate zone across the United States. Whether you live in a cool northern region or a warm southern state, onion varieties exist that will thrive in your area. Onions belong to the allium family, which also includes garlic, leeks, and chives. Unlike some vegetables that demand constant attention, onions are relatively low-maintenance once established.

The onion plant has a simple structure: a underground bulb that stores nutrients and a leafy green top that grows above ground. The bulb develops in layers as the plant matures, eventually forming the papery-skinned onion you harvest. Most home gardeners choose between short-day, intermediate-day, and long-day varieties. Short-day onions, which form bulbs when exposed to 10 to 12 hours of daylight, grow best in southern regions. Long-day onions need 14 to 16 hours of daylight and perform better in northern areas. Intermediate varieties work in the middle zones of the country.

Growing onions from seed or sets (small bulbs) differs in timeline and initial effort. Seeds take longer to produce mature onions—typically 120 to 150 days from planting to harvest—but cost less money and offer more variety choices. Sets are small, dormant bulbs that mature faster, usually ready to harvest in 60 to 120 days depending on the variety and growing conditions. Understanding these differences helps you decide which method suits your garden goals and schedule.

Practical takeaway: Check your location's day length and growing season length to select onion varieties that will perform well in your climate. Count backwards from your first frost date to determine whether seeds or sets make more sense for your timeline.

Starting Onions From Seed Indoors

Starting onions from seed indoors gives you access to hundreds of varieties and costs significantly less than purchasing sets. Begin seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last spring frost date. You'll need seed-starting containers, a seed-starting mix (not garden soil), and a warm location with good light exposure. Many gardeners use standard seed trays with drainage holes and place them under grow lights or on a sunny windowsill.

Fill your containers with moist seed-starting mix and sprinkle onion seeds thinly across the surface. Onion seeds are small, so precision placement helps prevent overcrowding. Cover seeds lightly with a thin layer of seed-starting mix—about one-quarter inch deep. Onion seeds need light to germinate, so don't bury them deeply. Maintain soil moisture at a consistent level, not waterlogged but not dry. Germination typically occurs within 7 to 10 days at temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once seedlings emerge, provide 12 to 16 hours of light daily through grow lights positioned 2 to 3 inches above the seedlings. Keep light levels consistent to prevent leggy, weak growth. Thin crowded seedlings by snipping them off with scissors rather than pulling, which disturbs neighbors. When seedlings reach 2 to 3 inches tall, you can begin a diluted fertilizer feeding every 2 to 3 weeks using a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10. Before transplanting outside, harden off seedlings by exposing them gradually to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days.

Practical takeaway: Start seeds in early February for most northern climates or adjust based on your local frost date. Use a heated seedling mat if your indoor environment stays below 65 degrees, as this speeds germination by several days.

Transplanting Seedlings and Using Sets

Hardened-off onion seedlings and dormant onion sets both transplant into the garden using similar methods. Choose a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Onions tolerate partial shade but produce larger bulbs with full sun exposure. Prepare your planting bed by working in 2 to 3 inches of compost or aged manure to improve soil structure and nutrient content. Onions prefer well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

For transplanting seedlings, space them 4 to 6 inches apart in rows that are 12 to 18 inches apart. Plant seedlings at the same depth they were growing in their containers. For sets, push them into loose soil so the tip is just visible above the soil surface—planting too deep can cause rot or prevent proper bulb formation. Space sets 4 to 6 inches apart using the same row spacing. Sets establish much faster than seedlings and typically show green growth within a few days.

Water both transplants and sets gently but thoroughly after planting. Consistent moisture during the first two weeks after transplanting helps establish root systems. Apply a 1-inch layer of mulch around plants, keeping it away from stems to prevent rot. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weeds, which compete for nutrients. In areas with heavy spring rains, consider planting in raised beds or mounds to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging.

Practical takeaway: If seedlings look weak or spindly before transplanting, trim them back to 2 inches tall a week before moving them outside. This encourages bushier growth and produces sturdier transplants that recover faster from transplant shock.

Caring for Growing Onions Throughout the Season

Once established in the garden, onions need regular watering, feeding, and weeding to reach full size. Water deeply once or twice per week, providing about 1 inch of water per week through rainfall or irrigation. During dry spells, increase watering frequency. The soil should remain consistently moist but not soggy. Water at the base of plants in the morning to reduce disease pressure. Wet foliage can develop fungal issues, particularly in humid climates.

Feed onions every 3 to 4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer or one slightly higher in nitrogen, such as 15-10-10, to support leafy growth that drives bulb development. Stop fertilizing about 4 weeks before your expected harvest date. Excessive nitrogen late in the season delays maturity and reduces storage quality. Many gardeners use fish emulsion or diluted liquid seaweed extract as gentler feeding options. A side dressing of compost every 4 to 6 weeks also provides steady nutrient release.

Weeding matters significantly because weeds compete with onions for water and nutrients, reducing bulb size. Hand-pull weeds carefully to avoid damaging onion roots, or use a thin hoe for shallow cultivation. Mulch application reduces weeding work by suppressing most annual weeds. Watch for common pests including onion maggots, thrips, and pink root fungus. In most home gardens, these issues remain minor. Remove diseased plants promptly and avoid planting alliums in the same bed for two years if serious disease develops. Insect damage typically doesn't warrant intervention in small gardens.

Practical takeaway: Create a feeding calendar in your garden notebook, marking when you planted and calculating when to make your last fertilizer application. Stop feeding 4 weeks before expected harvest to improve storage life and flavor intensity.

Recognizing Maturity and Harvesting Your Onions

Onion bulbs mature when their tops begin to yellow and fall over naturally. This process typically occurs 120 to 150 days after planting seeds or 60 to 120 days after planting sets, though exact timing depends on your onion variety, weather, and daylight hours. Don't clip the tops off artificially to hasten maturity—the falling-over process signals that bulbs have stopped expanding and are preparing for storage. When about 50 to 75 percent of the tops have fallen and turned brown, harvest time approaches.

For curing onions, pull or dig plants carefully to avoid bruising, which shortens storage life. A garden fork lifted gently underneath plants helps extract them without damage. Lay harvested onions on the ground for a few days to dry, or move them to a sheltered location with good air circulation. Leave the dried tops attached—don't trim them yet. Spread onions in a single layer on screens, in mesh bags, or on
