Learn How to Grow Mealworms at Home

Understanding Mealworm Basics and Why People Raise Them

Mealworms are the larval stage of the mealworm beetle, scientifically known as Tenebrio molitor. These small creatures measure about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch long when fully grown and have a tan or cream-colored appearance with segmented bodies. Unlike their name suggests, mealworms are not actually worms—they are beetle larvae that go through several life stages before becoming adult beetles.

People raise mealworms for several practical reasons. Many pet owners use them as food for chickens, reptiles, fish, and birds. Mealworms contain approximately 50% protein and 30% fat, making them a nutritious food source for animals. Some people also use mealworms for composting purposes, as they break down organic waste efficiently. Additionally, research into mealworms as a sustainable protein source for human consumption has increased in recent years, with studies showing potential for addressing food security concerns.

The mealworm life cycle takes approximately three to four months from egg to adult beetle, though this timeline can vary based on temperature and humidity conditions. Understanding this cycle is essential for maintaining a successful colony. The stages include eggs (which are difficult to see with the naked eye), larvae (the mealworms you typically see and use), pupae (a transitional stage lasting about 10-12 days), and adult beetles (which lay new eggs to continue the cycle).

Growing mealworms at home requires minimal space and equipment compared to raising other livestock or insects. A small closet corner, shelf, or even under-bed storage area can accommodate a productive colony. Many people find mealworm cultivation rewarding because it produces results relatively quickly and requires less daily maintenance than keeping pets.

Practical Takeaway: Before starting a mealworm colony, determine your primary reason for raising them—whether for animal feed, composting, or personal interest—as this will influence your colony size and management approach.

Setting Up Your Mealworm Habitat and Container

The foundation of a successful mealworm colony starts with choosing the right container. Mealworms can be raised in various types of containers, but certain materials work better than others. Clear plastic storage bins with dimensions of approximately 10 by 10 by 6 inches work well for small starter colonies, while larger colonies may require bins measuring 20 by 15 by 8 inches or larger. The key requirement is that containers have a secure, well-fitting lid because mealworms cannot climb smooth plastic walls, but adult beetles can fly and will escape if given the opportunity.

The container material matters for preventing escape and maintaining proper conditions. Clear plastic allows you to observe your colony without opening the container frequently, which is beneficial. Some people use aquariums or terrariums, but these must have secure covers. Wooden containers can absorb moisture and are generally not recommended. Glass containers work well but offer no advantage over clear plastic and may be more breakable during handling.

Ventilation is critical for mealworm health. Your container needs small air holes to allow oxygen circulation while preventing escape. You can drill small holes (about one-eighth inch diameter) in the lid and sides of plastic containers. Cover any large holes with fine mesh or screen material to keep mealworms inside while allowing air flow. Proper ventilation prevents the buildup of ammonia from waste, which can harm or kill your colony.

The bedding material inside the container serves multiple purposes: it provides food, creates a habitat, and allows mealworms to burrow naturally. Wheat bran is the most common bedding material used in mealworm colonies. A layer of wheat bran approximately 4 to 6 inches deep works well. You can purchase wheat bran at most feed stores or agricultural supply companies for approximately $10 to $20 for a 50-pound bag, which lasts several months for a typical home colony. Some people supplement wheat bran with rolled oats, cornmeal, or ground chicken feed. Avoid using cedar or pine shavings, as these materials contain compounds that are toxic to mealworms.

Your colony also needs moisture regulation. Mealworms do not require standing water, but they need some moisture in their environment. You can provide moisture by placing fresh vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, or lettuce in the container. These vegetables serve dual purposes: they add needed moisture and provide supplemental nutrition. Replace vegetables every few days to prevent mold growth. Alternatively, you can occasionally mist the bedding with a spray bottle to maintain slight moisture, but avoid making it wet or soggy.

Practical Takeaway: Start with a clear plastic storage bin with secure lid and ventilation holes, fill it with 4-6 inches of wheat bran, and add fresh vegetables twice weekly to create a functional mealworm habitat.

Temperature, Humidity, and Environmental Conditions

Mealworms thrive in specific environmental conditions that significantly affect their growth rate and survival. Temperature is the most important factor in controlling your colony's development. Mealworms grow most rapidly at temperatures between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 25-30 degrees Celsius). At these temperatures, the complete life cycle from egg to adult occurs in about three to four months. If temperatures drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, mealworm growth slows dramatically, and development may halt entirely. At temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, mealworms may become stressed and experience higher mortality rates.

Most home environments naturally fall within acceptable ranges, but you may need to provide supplemental heat during cold months or in cooler climates. A heat tape designed for terrariums or a heating pad placed under or beside the container can maintain proper temperatures. These heating devices typically cost between $20 and $50 and use minimal electricity. If you use a heating source, pair it with a basic thermometer to monitor actual temperatures inside the container. Inexpensive digital thermometers or temperature strips cost around $5 to $15.

Humidity levels should remain moderate—not too dry and not excessively wet. The ideal humidity range is between 60 and 80 percent. Humidity that is too low will cause mealworms to dry out, while excessive moisture promotes mold and bacterial growth. In dry climates or during heating seasons when indoor air becomes dry, mist the bedding lightly or ensure fresh vegetables remain available. In humid climates, ensure adequate ventilation and avoid adding excess moisture.

Lighting does not significantly affect mealworm growth, and colonies thrive in darkness or low-light conditions. In fact, mealworms are sensitive to light and prefer dark environments. This makes them ideal for closet or cabinet storage. Avoid placing containers in direct sunlight, which can cause temperature fluctuations and excessive heat.

The location you choose for your mealworm container affects environmental stability. A temperature-controlled closet, basement, or sheltered location offers more stable conditions than areas near windows, doors, or heating vents. Basements maintain relatively consistent temperatures year-round. Avoid locations with temperature extremes or rapid fluctuations. Some people keep mealworm colonies in their kitchens, garage shelves, or bedroom closets successfully.

Practical Takeaway: Maintain temperatures between 77-86 degrees Fahrenheit using room heat or a heating pad, monitor moisture with regular vegetable additions, and store your container in a dark, stable location away from extreme temperature changes.

Feeding Your Mealworm Colony and Preventing Common Problems

Mealworms derive their primary nutrition from the wheat bran bedding material in your container. The wheat bran serves as both habitat and food. You do not need to provide additional grain-based foods regularly, though some people supplement the diet with rolled oats or crushed grains. The wheat bran typically provides sufficient nutrition to sustain a colony for months. A 50-pound bag of wheat bran can feed a large colony for an entire season.

Fresh produce provides essential moisture and supplemental nutrients that keep your colony healthy and productive. Suitable vegetables include carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuce, and squash. Cut vegetables into pieces approximately one to two inches in size and place them directly on top of the bedding. Mealworms will consume these items over several days. Remove any uneaten produce after three to five days to prevent mold development, which can spread throughout the colony and cause significant problems. Moldy food should
