Learn How to Forward Calls on Android Phones

Understanding Call Forwarding on Android Devices

Call forwarding is a telecommunications feature that allows incoming phone calls to be redirected to a different phone number. When you set up call forwarding on your Android phone, calls that would normally ring on your device instead route to another number you specify. This feature has been part of cellular networks for decades and remains one of the most useful tools for managing your communications.

Android phones access call forwarding through settings that connect directly to your mobile carrier's network infrastructure. When someone calls your phone number, the carrier's system checks whether call forwarding is active. If it is, the call gets redirected before it ever reaches your phone. This happens at the network level, meaning the feature works regardless of whether your Android device is powered on, has a data connection, or is in airplane mode.

Different carriers implement call forwarding slightly differently, though the basic concept remains the same across Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and regional carriers. Some carriers offer this as a standard feature included with all plans, while others may charge a small monthly fee—typically between $0 and $5. The specific options available depend on your carrier's network capabilities and your service plan.

Call forwarding comes in several varieties. Unconditional call forwarding sends all calls to your chosen number. Busy call forwarding activates only when your line is busy. No-answer forwarding kicks in if you don't pick up within a set number of rings. Selective call forwarding lets you forward calls from specific numbers only. Understanding which type suits your situation helps you use the feature effectively.

Practical Takeaway: Before setting up call forwarding, contact your carrier to confirm the feature is included in your plan and learn about any associated costs. Ask them which forwarding types they support, as this affects what options you'll see in your Android settings.

Accessing Call Forwarding Settings on Different Android Versions

The location of call forwarding settings varies depending on which version of Android your phone runs. Android 12 and newer versions store call forwarding settings in slightly different places than Android 11 and earlier. Most modern Android phones from Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, and other manufacturers use similar menu structures, though some customization by manufacturers does occur.

On most Android phones, you'll begin in the Phone app—the standard dialer application on your device. Open the Phone app and look for a menu button, usually represented by three vertical dots or horizontal lines. This menu button appears in different locations depending on your phone model. On Samsung devices, it typically sits in the upper right corner. On Google Pixel phones, it may appear at the bottom of the screen. The menu might be labeled "Settings," "More," or "Options."

Once you access the Phone app's settings menu, look for an option labeled "Call settings," "Call forwarding," or "Calling accounts." This section houses various call-related features beyond just forwarding. You may see options for call waiting, caller ID display, call recording, voicemail, and other calling features. The exact naming depends on your carrier and phone manufacturer.

Some carriers provide their own dedicated apps for managing call features. Verizon customers can use the My Verizon app, AT&T customers may use the AT&T Mobile app, and T-Mobile users can access features through the T-Mobile app. These apps sometimes offer easier navigation to call forwarding than the standard Android Phone app. However, the standard Phone app settings method works across all carriers.

If you cannot locate call forwarding in your Phone app settings, your carrier may require you to use their custom app or website. Checking your carrier's official website or calling their customer service line can clarify where to find call forwarding controls for your specific plan and region.

Practical Takeaway: Spend a few minutes exploring your Phone app's menu structure on your specific device. Write down the exact path you take to reach Call settings—for example, "Phone app > three dots > Settings > Calling accounts > Call forwarding." This reference will help you return to these settings later without searching again.

Step-by-Step Process for Enabling Call Forwarding

The basic process for turning on call forwarding follows similar steps across most Android devices, though exact menu names may differ slightly. Start by opening your Phone app and locating the settings menu as described in the previous section. Once you're in the appropriate Call settings or Calling accounts area, look for "Call forwarding" or a similar option. This might appear as a single entry or as part of a larger list of call management features.

When you tap on Call forwarding, you'll typically see options for different forwarding types. Choose "Unconditional call forwarding" if you want all incoming calls redirected. If you only want calls forwarded when you're busy or don't answer, select "Busy forwarding" or "No answer forwarding" respectively. Some phones show these as separate toggles, while others display them in a list format where you tap each type individually.

After selecting your forwarding type, the system prompts you to enter the destination phone number. This is the number where you want your calls to ring instead of on your Android phone. You can enter any phone number, including your work phone, home phone, another mobile phone, or even a business line. Some people forward to a Google Voice number or a VoIP service for additional flexibility.

Enter the phone number carefully, including the area code. Most systems require you to enter numbers in the standard format (for example, 555-123-4567 or +1-555-123-4567). If you're forwarding to an international number, include the appropriate country code preceded by a plus sign. Double-check the number before confirming, as an incorrect digit will cause calls to route to the wrong destination.

After entering the number, you'll see an option to confirm or enable the forwarding. Tap the button labeled "Enable," "OK," "Save," "Turn On," or similar language depending on your device. The system then contacts your carrier's network to activate the forwarding. This process typically takes just a few seconds, though it may occasionally take a minute or two for the change to propagate through the network.

Practical Takeaway: When setting up forwarding for the first time, test it by calling your own Android phone number from another phone to confirm that the call routes correctly to your forwarding destination. This verification prevents frustration if the setup didn't work as intended.

Managing Different Call Forwarding Types and Settings

Once you understand unconditional call forwarding, learning about other forwarding types expands your options for managing incoming calls. Busy call forwarding activates only when your line is occupied with another call. This means if you're already on a call and someone else tries to reach you, that incoming call routes to your forwarding number instead of creating a call waiting situation. This proves useful when you want to keep your current conversation uninterrupted without having calls go directly to voicemail.

No-answer call forwarding triggers when you don't pick up within a certain number of rings. Most systems default to forwarding after four or five rings, though some carriers allow you to adjust this threshold. This option works well when you're sometimes unavailable but don't want to miss important calls. Callers still hear your phone ringing for the specified number of rings, then the call redirects to your chosen number.

Selective call forwarding, available on many carriers, forwards calls only from numbers you specify. You create a list of phone numbers, and only calls from those contacts get forwarded. All other callers reach your Android phone normally. This feature helps when you want certain people (like your boss or a key client) to always reach you at a specific location, while other callers use your main phone.

Some Android phones display your current forwarding status in the status bar or notification area. A small icon or indicator shows that call forwarding is active, providing a visual reminder. This prevents the common mistake of forgetting that forwarding is enabled when you no longer need it. If you don't see a status indicator, you can always return to your call forwarding settings to check the current status.

Disabling call forwarding follows the same path as enabling it. Return to your Call forwarding settings, select the forwarding type currently active, and choose the option to disable or turn off forwarding. Some phones require you to explicitly delete the forwarding number, while others have a simple toggle switch. Once disabled, calls route normally to your Android device again.

Practical Takeaway: Document which forwarding
