Learn How To Disable Google Password Manager Notifications

Understanding Google Password Manager and Its Notification System

Google Password Manager is a built-in feature available across Google's ecosystem of products and services. This tool stores passwords for websites and apps, making it easier for users to log into accounts without manually typing credentials each time. The Password Manager integrates with Chrome browsers, Android devices, and other Google services to provide cross-device password synchronization.

When you enable Google Password Manager, you may receive notifications about various password-related activities. These notifications serve different purposes: some alert you when the system detects a password breach, others remind you to update weak passwords, and some simply confirm when passwords are saved or auto-filled. Google introduced these notifications as a security feature to help users maintain stronger accounts.

As of 2024, Google Password Manager sends notifications for several scenarios. According to Google's documentation, notifications appear when passwords matching your saved credentials are found in data breaches, when the system detects weak or reused passwords across multiple accounts, when you successfully use auto-fill to sign in, and when new passwords are saved to your manager. These notifications appear as pop-ups in your browser, banners in Chrome settings, or push notifications on mobile devices depending on your configuration.

Understanding how these notifications work is the first step toward managing them. The notification system is designed to operate by default, which means most users receive these alerts unless they've previously adjusted their settings. Different devices and platforms handle notifications differently, so what you experience on a computer may differ from what appears on your phone.

Practical Takeaway: Before disabling notifications, consider which types genuinely bother you. Security notifications about breached passwords provide valuable information, while save confirmations may be less critical to your workflow.

Disabling Password Manager Notifications on Chrome Desktop

The process for turning off Google Password Manager notifications on Chrome differs slightly depending on your operating system, though the general approach remains consistent. Chrome stores notification settings within its main preferences menu, and Password Manager notifications fall under the broader notification settings category.

To begin, open Google Chrome and look for the three vertical dots menu in the upper right corner of your browser window. Click this menu, then select "Settings" from the dropdown options. On the left sidebar, you'll see several categories including "Privacy and security." Click on this section to expand it. Within Privacy and security, locate and click on "Site settings," which contains all notification permissions for websites and services.

In Site settings, scroll down until you find "Notifications." Click on this option to view all services that currently have permission to send notifications. Google services, including Password Manager, appear in this list if they're currently enabled. You'll see entries like "google.com" or "accounts.google.com" depending on how Chrome categorizes these services. Next to each entry, you'll see either "Allow" or "Block" status.

To prevent Password Manager notifications specifically, click on the Google service entry that handles password notifications. A small popup window appears showing more detailed options. Look for a toggle switch or dropdown menu that controls notification permissions for this particular service. Change the setting from "Allow" to "Block." This action prevents Google Password Manager from sending browser notifications, though the Password Manager itself continues functioning normally for auto-fill and password storage purposes.

After making this change, Chrome saves your preference automatically. No additional confirmation is required. You may notice that the notification appears differently in your settings list, now showing "Block" status instead of "Allow." This change applies only to the Chrome browser on that particular computer, so you'll need to repeat the process on other devices if you use Chrome on multiple machines.

Practical Takeaway: Blocking notifications at the browser level is the cleanest approach for desktop users, as it doesn't affect Password Manager functionality—only the alerts you receive about its activities.

Managing Password Manager Notifications on Android Devices

Android devices handle Password Manager notifications through Google Play Services and the Chrome app, making the process slightly different from desktop management. Android notifications for Password Manager typically appear in your notification shade (the dropdown menu from the top of your screen) and can be individually controlled through your device's settings.

On Android, open your device's main Settings app. Navigate to "Apps" or "Applications," depending on your device manufacturer's naming convention. This section shows all installed applications on your phone. Scroll down to find either "Chrome" or "Google Play Services," as both can generate Password Manager notifications. Select the relevant app to view its detailed settings.

Once you've opened the app information page, look for a "Notifications" option. Tapping this reveals granular controls over what this app can notify you about. You'll likely see several notification categories, which may include password security alerts, saved passwords, breach warnings, and general updates. Some Android devices allow you to disable notifications entirely for the app, while others let you turn off specific notification types.

If you want to keep security-related alerts but disable less critical notifications, examine each category carefully. Some Android versions show toggles for each notification type, allowing you to choose which alerts matter to you. For example, you might enable breach detection notifications while disabling password-saved confirmations. Other Android versions require you to either allow all notifications or block them entirely for that particular service.

An alternative approach on Android involves managing notifications at the Chrome app level rather than the system level. Open Chrome on your Android device, tap the three-dot menu, select "Settings," then "Notifications." Within Chrome's notification settings, you can manage Password Manager alerts separately from other Chrome notifications. Look for password-specific options and toggle them off as desired.

Practical Takeaway: Android users should explore both system-level app settings and Chrome-specific notification controls to find the balance that works best for their security needs.

Controlling Notifications in Your Google Account Settings

Beyond browser and device-specific settings, Google Account itself contains notification controls that affect Password Manager alerts across all connected devices. These account-level settings provide a centralized location for managing how Google services communicate with you, including password-related notifications.

To access your Google Account settings, visit myaccount.google.com in any web browser. Sign in with your Google credentials if you're not already logged in. On the main account page, look for "Security" in the left navigation menu. Click on "Security" to view your account's security-related options and settings. This section contains various tools related to account protection, including Password Manager controls.

Within the Security section, scroll down to find "Your devices" or "Manage all your devices" sections. Google Account settings also contain "Notifications" options that control which types of communications you receive from Google services. Look specifically for sections labeled "Security notifications" or "Google services notifications." In these areas, you'll find toggles or checkboxes for different notification types.

Password Manager notifications may be grouped under "Security alerts" or listed separately depending on your account's configuration. Unchecking the boxes associated with Password Manager notifications prevents Google from sending these alerts to all your connected devices. This differs from browser-level settings, which only affect notifications on that specific browser or device.

It's important to note that account-level notification controls affect your entire Google experience, not just Password Manager. When you disable notifications at this level, you may also prevent other security-related alerts from reaching you, such as unusual sign-in activity or compromised password warnings for your main Google account. Review what you're disabling before confirming changes to ensure you're not losing important security information.

Practical Takeaway: Account-level settings affect all your devices simultaneously, making this approach useful for users who want consistent notification preferences across their entire Google ecosystem.

Disabling Password Manager on iOS Devices

Apple's iOS devices handle Google Password Manager differently than Android or desktop platforms. iOS doesn't allow third-party password managers the same level of system integration as Android, so Google Password Manager notifications on iPhones and iPads work through the Chrome app or through Safari's integration settings.

Open the Chrome app and tap the three-dot menu at the bottom right of the screen. Select "Settings" from the menu options.
