Learn How to Deposit Checks Online With Chase

What Is Mobile Check Deposit and How Chase's Version Works

Mobile check deposit, sometimes called remote deposit capture, lets you deposit checks into your Chase bank account using your phone or computer instead of visiting a branch. This service photographs both sides of a check and sends that image to Chase's servers, where the bank processes it like a traditional deposit.

Chase's mobile check deposit feature is built into the Chase Mobile app, which is their official banking application for smartphones and tablets. The service connects directly to your checking or savings account. When you photograph a check, the image is encrypted and sent to Chase's processing centers. Bank employees or automated systems verify the check information, confirm the funds are legitimate, and credit your account accordingly.

The technology behind this process uses optical character recognition (OCR), which reads the printed numbers on checks automatically. The system captures the check amount, routing number, account number, and check number from the images you take. Chase stores these images securely and keeps records for several years, which helps protect both you and the bank if questions arise about a deposit later.

This service differs from other deposit methods in several ways. Unlike ATM deposits, you don't need to be near a Chase machine. Unlike mail deposits, the check doesn't travel through postal systems where it could be lost or delayed. The funds typically appear in your account within one to two business days, though this timing can vary depending on when you deposit and what day of the week it is.

Practical takeaway: Mobile check deposit is a photograph-based banking service that lets you use your phone to deposit checks. Understand that the service works by creating digital images of your check, not by sending the physical check immediately.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Using Chase Mobile Check Deposit

To use Chase's mobile check deposit feature, you'll need the Chase Mobile app, which you can find in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. After installing the app, log in with your existing Chase online banking username and password. If you don't have a Chase account yet, you'll need to open one at a Chase branch or through their website before you can use mobile deposit.

Once you're logged in, look for the deposit option in the app's main menu. Different versions of the app may organize this differently, but it's typically labeled "Mobile Check Deposit," "Deposit a Check," or found under a "Deposits" section. Tap this option to begin the deposit process.

Next, you'll select which account you want to deposit the check into. If you have multiple Chase checking or savings accounts, the app will show you a list. Choose the correct account—this step matters because you cannot reverse a deposit once it's processed if you choose the wrong account.

The app will then ask you to photograph the front of the check. Position your phone camera so that the entire check is visible in the frame, including all four corners. Make sure lighting is adequate so the printed text and numbers are clear and readable. The app usually shows you a live preview and may provide guidance about positioning or lighting. Take the photo when the image looks sharp and complete.

After capturing the front, the app will prompt you to photograph the back of the check. Endorse the back of your check before taking this photo—write "For Mobile Deposit Only" and your signature on the back. Then photograph that side using the same technique as the front.

The app will display both images so you can review them. Check that all information is visible and clear before proceeding. If either image looks blurry or incomplete, you can retake it. Once you confirm the images are acceptable, the app will ask you to enter the check amount manually as a verification step. Type in the dollar amount shown on the front of the check.

Practical takeaway: Mobile check deposit involves six main steps: open the app, select your account, photograph the front, photograph the back, review the images, and confirm the amount. Take clear photos with good lighting to avoid processing delays.

Important Limits and Restrictions to Know

Chase imposes limits on mobile check deposit amounts to manage fraud risk and protect both customers and the bank. These limits change based on your account type and banking history, but Chase typically allows between $2,000 and $10,000 per transaction for most customers. Some accounts with longer histories or higher balances may have higher limits, while new accounts might start with lower limits that increase over time.

In addition to per-transaction limits, Chase also sets daily limits on how much you can deposit through mobile check deposit in a single day. Daily limits typically range from $5,000 to $25,000, though your specific limit depends on your account. If you need to deposit more than your limit allows, you have several alternatives: you can make multiple deposits on different days, deposit some checks at an ATM, visit a branch, or mail checks to Chase using their mailing address.

Chase also has restrictions on the types of checks you can deposit through mobile. You can deposit standard personal checks, business checks, and government checks. However, you cannot deposit certain items including checks that are post-dated (written for a future date), checks older than six months, checks that have already been deposited, third-party checks (checks written to someone else that they've endorsed to you), and checks with illegible or missing information.

There are also timing restrictions. Chase typically processes mobile check deposits only during business hours on business days. If you submit a check deposit after business hours or on a weekend, it will be processed the next business day. Holidays also affect processing times, so deposits submitted on holidays or after holiday hours may take longer to appear in your account.

Geographic restrictions apply as well. You can only use mobile check deposit if you have a Chase account and live in a location where Chase offers the service. Chase operates primarily in the United States, and the service is available to customers with accounts at Chase branches or through their online banking platform.

Practical takeaway: Know your account's specific deposit limits and understand that restrictions apply to check age, type, and processing times. Contact Chase directly to learn your personal transaction and daily limits, as these vary by account.

Security Measures and How Your Information Is Protected

When you use Chase mobile check deposit, your information passes through multiple layers of security. The Chase Mobile app uses encryption technology that scrambles your data while it travels over the internet from your phone to Chase's servers. This encryption standard, called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security), is the same technology used by online retailers and financial institutions worldwide.

Your photos are encrypted on Chase's servers and stored in secure databases that have multiple backups. Chase restricts which employees can access these images and keeps detailed logs of who views what information and when. After a certain period, Chase deletes the images from their active systems, though they retain records for regulatory and legal purposes.

Chase requires you to authenticate yourself before you can make any deposit. You must log into your account with your username and password, and depending on your security settings, you may also need to enter a one-time code sent to your phone or email. This two-factor verification means that even if someone obtained your password, they couldn't make deposits without also accessing your phone or email.

The app itself includes security features that limit how much you can deposit and how often. If unusual activity occurs on your account, Chase's fraud detection systems may temporarily block deposits or alert you to review your account. You should enable notifications on your account so you receive alerts about all deposits, which helps you catch unauthorized activity quickly.

Your responsibility in security involves several practices. Never photograph checks on public Wi-Fi networks—always use password-protected networks or your phone's cellular data. Don't share your phone with others or leave your app logged in on shared devices. After depositing a check, mark it as deposited so you don't accidentally deposit it again. Keep your phone's operating system and the Chase app updated, as updates often include security improvements.

If you notice something suspicious, such as a deposit you don't remember making or an unfamiliar amount, contact Chase immediately. Report the issue as soon as you notice it, as banks have limited timeframes for investigating unauthorized transactions.

Practical takeaway: Chase uses encryption, account verification, and fraud detection to protect your data. Your role in security involves using secure networks, protecting your login information, and monitoring your account regularly.
