Learn How to Delete Saved Usernames From Chrome

Understanding Chrome's Username and Password Storage System

Google Chrome includes a built-in password manager that stores usernames and passwords you enter when logging into websites. This feature is designed to make your online experience faster by automatically filling in login information when you revisit sites. However, many people don't realize that Chrome saves these usernames even when you choose not to save the full password, or when you're browsing in regular (non-incognito) mode.

When you visit a login page and enter your username and password, Chrome detects the form and prompts you to save this information. If you click "Save," both the username and password are stored in your Chrome profile. If you click "Not now" or dismiss the prompt, Chrome may still remember the username for that site. This happens because Chrome treats usernames as general form data separate from sensitive password storage.

The stored usernames appear in autofill suggestions whenever you click on a username field on that website. They also sync across devices if you've signed into Chrome with your Google account and enabled sync features. This means a username saved on your desktop computer may appear on your laptop, tablet, or phone as well.

Understanding this system is important because you may want to remove saved usernames for privacy reasons, before sharing your computer with someone else, or simply to clean up your autofill suggestions. Removing usernames doesn't delete your account on those websites—it only removes the stored information from Chrome's memory.

Practical Takeaway: Chrome stores usernames separately from passwords in its autofill system. Knowing this distinction helps you understand why a username might appear in autofill suggestions even if you didn't save the password, and why you may want to remove certain usernames from your browser.

Accessing Chrome's Password and Autofill Settings

To delete saved usernames from Chrome, you first need to access the browser's settings menu. The location of these settings varies slightly depending on whether you're using Chrome on Windows, Mac, or Linux, but the general process is the same across all platforms.

On any device, open Google Chrome and look at the top-right corner of the browser window. You'll see three vertical dots (called the menu button) next to your profile picture if you're signed into Chrome. Click on these three dots to open a dropdown menu. From this menu, select "Settings." This action opens Chrome's main settings page in a new tab.

Once you're in the Settings page, you'll see several options on the left side panel including "You and Google," "Autofill and passwords," "Privacy and security," and others. The section you need is called "Autofill and passwords." Click on this option to expand it and see related settings.

Within the "Autofill and passwords" section, you'll see several subsections including "Google Password Manager," "Addresses and more," and "Payment methods." The usernames you want to remove are typically found under the "Google Password Manager" section, which shows saved passwords and associated usernames. If a username was saved as general autofill data (without a password), it might appear under "Addresses and more."

Some users report that their browser version might have slightly different naming. Older versions of Chrome might show "Passwords" instead of "Google Password Manager," but the functionality remains the same. If you can't find these options, ensure you're using an updated version of Chrome by checking the menu for "About Google Chrome," which will automatically update your browser if needed.

Practical Takeaway: Finding Chrome's password settings is straightforward: click the three-dot menu, select Settings, then navigate to "Autofill and passwords" and "Google Password Manager." This is your gateway to viewing and managing all saved usernames and passwords in Chrome.

Deleting Individual Usernames from the Password Manager

Once you're in the Google Password Manager section, you'll see a list of websites and apps where Chrome has saved login information. Each entry typically shows the website name, the saved username or email address, and sometimes a partial view of the password (usually shown as dots for security). This list is organized alphabetically, making it easier to find specific sites.

To delete a single username, locate the website in the password manager list. Click on the entry to expand it and view more details about the saved information. You'll see the full username displayed, along with the website URL. Once you've clicked on the entry and it expands, you should see options to view, edit, or delete this saved information.

Look for a delete button, which is typically represented by a trash can icon or the word "Delete." The exact appearance depends on your Chrome version and device. On most versions, you'll see this option either within the expanded entry or as a button that appears when you hover your mouse over the saved password entry. Click the delete button.

Chrome will ask you to confirm that you want to delete this saved password (and associated username). This confirmation step prevents accidental deletion. Simply confirm your choice, and Chrome will immediately remove the saved username and password from your account. The deletion is permanent—if you want to save this information again, you'll need to manually enter it when logging into that website next time.

If you're signed into Chrome and have sync enabled, this deletion will also apply to other devices where you're logged into Chrome with the same Google account. The username will disappear from the password manager on your phone, tablet, and other computers.

Practical Takeaway: Deleting individual usernames is a straightforward process: find the website in your password manager, click to expand it, select the delete option, and confirm. The username is then removed from all synced devices.

Clearing Autofilled Usernames Not Stored as Passwords

Sometimes Chrome saves usernames as general autofill data rather than as part of the password manager system. This commonly happens when you enter a username but don't save the password, or when websites use non-standard login forms. These usernames appear in the "Addresses and more" section of autofill settings rather than in the password manager.

To access these saved usernames, go to Settings, then "Autofill and passwords," and click on "Addresses and more." This section displays addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and other form data that Chrome has learned from your browsing. Any usernames saved this way will appear here as well, though they may be listed as email addresses or generic text rather than specifically labeled as "usernames."

To remove a saved username from this section, click on the entry to view its details. You should see an option to delete this autofill entry. Click the delete button (usually a trash can icon) and confirm your choice. Chrome will remove this autofill suggestion, and it won't appear in your autofill dropdown when you visit that website again.

If you want to clear all autofill suggestions at once, rather than deleting them one by one, you can go to the "Autofill and passwords" section and look for an option to delete all autofill entries. However, this nuclear option will remove all stored autofill data, not just usernames, so use it carefully if you want to keep other autofill information like addresses or phone numbers.

Another method to remove autofill suggestions is through clearing your browsing data. Go to Settings, then "Privacy and security," and select "Delete browsing data." Make sure the time range is set to "All time," and check the box for "Autofill form data" (not passwords, which have a separate checkbox). This will clear all autofill suggestions including saved usernames, though you'll need to decide if you want to clear other browsing data at the same time.

Practical Takeaway: Usernames saved as autofill data (not passwords) are found in the "Addresses and more" section. You can delete them individually or clear all autofill data through the privacy settings—just be aware that this affects all autofill suggestions, not just usernames.

Managing Synced Usernames Across Multiple Devices

If you're signed into Google Chrome on multiple devices (such as a desktop computer, laptop, phone, and tablet) and have sync enabled, any usernames saved on one device will appear on all your other devices. This is a powerful feature for convenience, but it also means that deleting a username on one device requires understanding how sync works.
