Understanding Beach Waves: What They Are and Why They Work

Beach waves, also called beachy waves or surfer waves, are a hairstyle characterized by loose, tousled curls or waves that look effortlessly relaxed. Unlike tight curls or structured waves, beach waves have a natural, undone appearance that mimics the texture hair gets from saltwater and sun exposure at the beach. This style works on various hair types, from straight to naturally curly hair, though the technique varies depending on your starting point.

The science behind beach waves relates to how texture is created in hair. Hair is made of protein structures that can be temporarily reshaped through heat or moisture. When you curl hair and cool it down, the proteins set into that new shape. Beach waves differ from traditional curls because they're intentionally less uniform—they vary in size, direction, and tightness, which creates that casual, natural look.

Beach waves became particularly popular in the 1970s and 1980s, though they've remained a staple style through modern times. According to hair industry data, beach waves consistently rank among the top three most-requested hairstyles at salons. The appeal lies partly in their versatility—they work for casual daily wear, professional settings, and special occasions. They also work across different hair lengths, from shoulder-length hair to much longer styles.

The style gained renewed interest in the 2010s with the rise of effortless, "no-makeup makeup" aesthetic in popular culture. This preference for undone-looking styles extended to hair, making beach waves a go-to choice. The texture can last several days with proper care, making it practical for people who don't want to style their hair daily.

Practical takeaway: Beach waves work across different hair types and lengths because they rely on loose texture rather than precise curl formation. Understanding that this style mimics natural wave patterns helps you recreate it at home using appropriate heat or moisture techniques.

Preparing Your Hair for Beach Waves: The Foundation Step

Proper preparation is essential before creating beach waves. Starting with clean, damp hair gives you the best foundation. Wash your hair with your regular shampoo and conditioner, but don't apply conditioner to your roots—focus on the mid-lengths and ends. Conditioning the roots can make waves fall out faster because the weight of the product pulls the curls down.

After washing, gently squeeze out excess water without roughly wringing your hair. Pat your hair with a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt rather than a regular towel, which can cause frizz. Your hair should be damp but not dripping wet when you begin styling. If your hair is very fine or thin, you might want to apply a lightweight mousse to your damp roots—this adds texture and helps waves hold longer. Use about a quarter-sized amount and work it through with your fingers.

Applying a heat protectant spray is crucial when using hot tools. These sprays create a barrier between your hair and the heat source, reducing damage. Spray the product evenly throughout your damp hair, holding the bottle about six inches away. Common heat protectants include silicone-based sprays and lighter water-based formulas. Choose based on your hair type: silicone products work well for thicker hair, while lighter formulas suit fine hair better.

If you have naturally curly or textured hair, you might skip heated tools entirely. Instead, you can enhance your natural waves using a curl-defining cream or gel applied to damp hair, then allowing it to air dry or diffusing it with a blow dryer on low heat. This method works particularly well for people with waves already present in their hair texture.

Many people also find that slightly dirty hair—hair that's been a day or two since washing—holds waves better than freshly washed hair. The natural oils that build up help texture stick. However, the hair should still look and feel clean to you personally.

Practical takeaway: Begin with damp, conditioned hair, use heat protectant products, and avoid over-conditioning the roots. These preparation steps make a significant difference in how long your waves last and how healthy your hair remains.

Using a Curling Iron to Create Beach Waves

A curling iron is one of the most straightforward tools for creating beach waves at home. For this method, you'll want a barrel size between 1 and 1.5 inches in diameter. Larger barrels create looser, bigger waves, while smaller barrels create tighter, more defined waves. A 1.25-inch barrel is a good middle ground that works for most people and hair types.

Start with damp hair that's been treated with heat protectant. Blow dry your hair until it's about 80 percent dry—not completely dry, as damp hair takes heat better and creates more defined waves. Divide your hair into four to six sections using clips. Working from the bottom layer first helps ensure all your hair gets styled, not just the outer layer.

Take a section of hair about one inch wide. Starting near the roots, wrap the hair around the barrel away from your face. Hold for about five to eight seconds, depending on how strong you want the wave. The barrel temperature matters: most people use settings between 300 and 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Finer hair needs lower temperatures (around 300-325 degrees), while thicker hair can handle higher temperatures (350-375 degrees).

The key to beach waves rather than tight curls is the way you wrap and release. Instead of wrapping the entire section tightly, try wrapping only partway down the barrel, leaving the ends out. Or, wrap the hair loosely rather than tightly. After holding the heat, let the curl cool slightly before sliding the iron out—this sets the wave. Some people press the curl gently with their fingers as it cools.

Alternate the direction you curl your hair as you move around your head. Curl some sections away from your face and others toward your face. This creates a more natural, less uniform look than curling everything the same direction. You can also skip curling some sections entirely—having some straight pieces mixed with waves creates a more beachy appearance.

After you've curled all sections and they've cooled completely, gently run your fingers through your hair to break up the curls and create waves rather than ringlets. Some people use a wide-tooth comb to do this. The result should look tousled, not perfectly coiffed.

Practical takeaway: A curling iron creates beach waves through varied wrapping techniques and alternating directions. Breaking up curls with your fingers after styling transforms tight curls into the relaxed wave pattern that defines this look.

Using a Waving Iron or Straightener for Softer Waves

A waving iron (also called a crimping iron) or a flat iron can create beach waves with a different texture than a curling iron produces. These tools are particularly useful if you want softer, more subtle waves rather than pronounced ringlets. A waving iron has zigzag plates that create texture throughout the hair, while a flat iron uses heat and technique to form waves.

For a flat iron method, you'll need a 1-inch to 1.5-inch wide plate. Start with blow-dried hair treated with heat protectant. Take a one-inch section of hair and clamp the flat iron near the roots. Instead of running it straight down, twist the iron as you glide down the hair section. This twisting motion creates a wave pattern. Adjust your twist speed and angle—slower twists create tighter waves, while faster movements make looser waves.

Another flat iron technique involves the "S" motion: move the iron in an S-shaped pattern down each section of hair. Close the plates, glide down slightly while moving to the right, then glide down while moving left, creating a zigzag pattern. This technique requires practice but creates beautiful, natural-looking waves.

Waving irons work differently because the plates do the texturing work for you. Clamp a section of hair in the waving iron and slide it down from root to tip. The zigzag plates automatically create texture. Because waving irons create more uniform texture, you'll want to vary how you use them—wave some sections and leave others relatively straight, or apply the waving iron multiple times to some sections and just once to others.

One advantage of flat irons and waving irons is that they create
