Learn How to Clean Your Oticon Hearing Aids

Understanding Your Oticon Hearing Aid Components

Oticon hearing aids contain several key parts that work together to help you hear better. Before you start cleaning, it helps to know what each piece does and why keeping it clean matters. The main body of the device houses the microphone, amplifier, and speaker. The microphone picks up sounds from your environment, the amplifier makes those sounds louder, and the speaker delivers the amplified sound into your ear canal.

Your Oticon hearing aids also include a battery compartment that powers the device. Depending on your model, you may have rechargeable batteries or disposable ones. Many Oticon models feature wireless connectivity, which means they have small antennas inside the casing. The ear hook or dome sits in your ear and can accumulate earwax and moisture—two of the biggest enemies of hearing aid performance.

Different Oticon models have slightly different designs. Behind-the-ear models have a curved piece that sits behind your ear with tubing that goes into the ear canal. In-the-ear models are smaller and fit mostly inside your ear. Receiver-in-canal models have a thin wire connecting the main body to a small speaker that sits in your ear. Each design requires attention to different areas during cleaning.

Understanding these components helps you clean more effectively because you'll know which parts need the most attention. Microphones and speakers are sensitive and need gentle care. Battery contacts need to stay dry and free of debris to work properly. The dome or ear hook is removable on many models and needs regular cleaning to prevent earwax buildup that can block sound.

Practical takeaway: Locate the removable parts of your specific Oticon model by checking your user manual. Take a photo of your hearing aid and label each part mentally—this helps you remember where to focus during cleaning.

Gathering the Right Cleaning Supplies

You don't need expensive specialty products to keep your Oticon hearing aids clean. Most of what you need is inexpensive and easy to find. Start by getting a dry cleaning brush. This is typically a soft-bristled brush designed specifically for hearing aids. Oticon often includes one with your purchase, but you can also buy replacement brushes at drugstores or online. The brush helps remove earwax and debris from the microphone ports and speaker openings.

Next, get some clean, dry cloths. Microfiber cloths work best because they don't shed fibers like regular cloths sometimes do. You want cloths that are lint-free so you don't end up transferring particles to your hearing aids. A soft cloth from eyeglass cleaning kits works well, or you can purchase microfiber cloths separately. Avoid paper towels or tissues, as these can leave small fibers behind.

Consider purchasing a hearing aid drying container or dehumidifier. These devices use desiccant material (usually silica gel or similar substances) to absorb moisture from your hearing aids overnight. This is especially important if you live in a humid climate or tend to perspire. Some models plug in electrically, while others use replaceable desiccant cartridges. This is one investment that can extend your hearing aid lifespan significantly.

You may also want wax guards or wax filters for your specific Oticon model. These are small, removable filters that catch earwax before it reaches the speaker or receiver. Many Oticon models use these, and they're replaceable when they get clogged. Having extra wax guards on hand means you can replace them whenever needed without waiting to order new ones.

Finally, consider getting a hearing aid storage case with compartments. This keeps your hearing aids safe when not in use and helps organize your cleaning supplies. Some cases include space for your drying container or dehumidifier. Having a dedicated spot for your hearing aids reduces the chance you'll misplace them and makes daily cleaning more of a routine habit.

Practical takeaway: Create a small cleaning kit in a drawer or bathroom cabinet with your brush, cloths, wax guards, and drying container. When all supplies are together in one place, you're more likely to clean your hearing aids regularly.

Daily Cleaning Procedures for Oticon Hearing Aids

Establishing a daily cleaning routine keeps your Oticon hearing aids functioning well and prevents buildup that becomes harder to remove. The best time to clean is in the evening before storing your hearing aids for the night. Start by removing your hearing aids carefully and setting them on a clean, soft surface like a towel or cloth. This prevents them from rolling onto a hard floor if you accidentally drop them.

Using your soft-bristled brush, gently brush the exterior of each hearing aid. Pay special attention to any visible openings where sound enters or exits the device. Use short, gentle strokes rather than scrubbing motions. For behind-the-ear models, brush the curved body, the hook, and the tubing gently. For in-the-ear models, brush the entire outer surface and the area around any vents. If your model has wax guards, check them now to see if they appear clogged with earwax.

Next, use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe down the entire surface of each hearing aid. This removes any loose particles the brush didn't catch and dries any moisture from sweat or humidity. Pay attention to crevices where the battery door closes and around any buttons or controls. If your hearing aids have an ear hook or dome, you can remove these pieces on most Oticon models and wipe them separately with the cloth.

If your Oticon model uses replaceable wax guards and one appears clogged, now is the time to replace it. Follow your user manual for instructions on how to remove the old guard and insert the new one. This usually takes just a few seconds and prevents earwax from reaching the speaker or receiver. Some people replace their wax guards weekly, while others do it only when they notice reduced sound quality.

After cleaning, allow your hearing aids to air dry for a few minutes before storing them. This evaporates any remaining moisture. Then place them in your drying container or dehumidifier overnight. This step is crucial because moisture is one of the biggest threats to hearing aid longevity. Even a small amount of trapped moisture can corrode internal components or cause feedback and reduced performance.

Practical takeaway: Set a phone reminder for 8 p.m. or whenever you typically remove your hearing aids. When the reminder goes off, spend five minutes cleaning and drying your devices. This habit takes minimal time but pays big dividends in performance and longevity.

Removing and Cleaning the Ear Hook and Dome

The ear hook and dome are the parts of your Oticon hearing aid that make direct contact with your ear, which means they accumulate earwax, oils from your skin, and sometimes dead skin cells. Regular removal and cleaning of these components is essential for both hearing aid performance and ear health. On most Oticon models, these pieces are designed to be removed easily without tools—you simply twist or gently pull them away from the main body of the hearing aid.

To remove the dome or ear hook, hold your hearing aid steady and gently pull the dome straight away from the receiver or hook. Don't twist or force it, as this can damage both the dome and the connection point. Some domes twist rather than pull—check your user manual for your specific model. Once removed, examine the dome or hook closely. If it appears discolored, yellowed, or has visible earwax buildup, it needs cleaning.

Rinse the dome or ear hook under lukewarm running water. You can use a tiny amount of mild soap if needed, though water alone usually works fine. Use your finger or a soft cloth to gently rub away any earwax or debris. Avoid using any hard implements, as the dome material can be scratched or damaged. Pay special attention to the tip of the dome—this is where earwax accumulates most. A soft toothbrush can help here, using very gentle motions.

After rinsing thoroughly to remove any soap residue, use a clean microfiber cloth to dry the dome completely. Moisture inside the dome can cause feedback or poor sound quality. Once the dome is completely dry, reattach it to your hearing aid. Make sure it's seated properly so it will stay in your ear during use. Some domes have ridges or threading that guide them into place—make sure these align correctly as you reattach.

Domes typically last several
