Learn How to Check Your Blood Glucose at Home

Understanding Blood Glucose and Why Home Monitoring Matters

Blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is the amount of glucose (a type of sugar) in your bloodstream at any given moment. Your body uses glucose for energy. When you eat food containing carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks them down into glucose, which enters your blood. Your pancreas produces a hormone called insulin that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Understanding how this process works is important for managing your health, especially if you have diabetes or prediabetes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 37 million Americans have diabetes, and about 1 in 5 don't know they have it. Checking your blood glucose at home provides valuable information about how your body responds to food, activity, stress, and illness. This information can help you and your healthcare provider make better decisions about your diet, medications, and lifestyle.

For people with type 1 diabetes, regular blood glucose monitoring is essential because the pancreas produces little or no insulin. For people with type 2 diabetes, home monitoring helps track how well treatment is working. Even people without diabetes may monitor blood glucose to understand their health patterns or per their doctor's recommendation.

Home monitoring is different from the A1C test, which shows your average blood glucose over about three months. Home monitoring shows your glucose levels at specific moments, giving you immediate feedback about what's happening in your body right now. This real-time information helps you see patterns—for example, how a particular meal affects your glucose or how exercise impacts your levels.

Practical Takeaway: Blood glucose monitoring at home gives you day-to-day information about your blood sugar levels, helping you understand how your body responds to food, activity, and other factors that affect your health.

Types of Blood Glucose Monitoring Devices and How They Work

Several types of devices can measure blood glucose at home. The most common method is using a glucose meter (also called a glucometer or blood glucose monitor), which requires a small blood sample, usually from the tip of your finger. You prick your finger with a small needle called a lancet, apply the blood drop to a test strip, insert the strip into the meter, and the device displays your glucose reading within 5 to 15 seconds. Meters vary in size, speed, and features, but they all use the same basic principle.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are wearable devices about the size of a large coin that you attach to your skin, usually on your abdomen or arm. A tiny sensor under the skin measures glucose in the fluid between cells approximately every 5 minutes. CGMs send readings to a receiver, smartphone, or smartwatch. You typically wear a CGM for 10 to 14 days before replacing it. CGMs don't require finger sticks and provide more frequent readings throughout the day and night, making it easier to see patterns in your glucose levels.

Flash glucose monitors are a newer option that sits on your skin like a CGM but requires you to scan it with a reader or smartphone to get a reading. Unlike CGMs, flash monitors don't automatically send data to your phone—you must actively scan them. They're often less expensive than traditional CGMs.

Traditional glucose meters remain popular because they're affordable, portable, and straightforward to use. Most insurance plans cover them when prescribed by a doctor. CGMs and flash monitors typically cost more but may be covered for people with type 1 diabetes or those taking insulin. Your healthcare provider can recommend which device might work best for your situation based on your diagnosis, treatment plan, and lifestyle.

Practical Takeaway: Choose a monitoring device based on your needs and lifestyle. Traditional glucose meters work well for occasional testing, while CGMs provide continuous information if you need frequent monitoring throughout the day.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Using a Glucose Meter

Using a glucose meter correctly ensures you get accurate readings. Start by washing your hands with warm soap and water. Warm water helps increase blood flow to your fingertips, making it easier to get a blood sample. Dry your hands completely—moisture can dilute the blood and give an inaccurate reading. Some people use alcohol prep pads to clean the finger before testing, but this isn't necessary if hands are clean, and alcohol can also dilute the blood sample.

Next, prepare your lancing device by inserting a fresh lancet (the small needle). Most lancing devices have a depth setting—start with the recommended setting for your skin type, usually in the middle range. Pierce the side of your fingertip rather than the center, where there are fewer nerve endings and it causes less discomfort. Squeeze gently around the puncture site until a small drop of blood forms. The drop should be large enough to cover the test strip's sample area completely, but you shouldn't have to squeeze hard or milk your finger excessively.

Hold the test strip up to the blood drop—depending on your meter, you either apply the drop to the strip before inserting it into the meter or insert the empty strip first and then apply blood to the strip's opening. Follow your specific meter's instructions. The meter will begin counting down, typically 5 to 15 seconds, and then display your reading on the screen. Most meters also store your reading along with the date and time in their memory, allowing you to review trends over days or weeks.

After testing, place the used lancet in a sharps container—a puncture-resistant container designed for needles and lancets. Never throw lancets in regular trash. Used test strips can go in regular trash. Keep your meter and supplies at room temperature; extreme heat or cold can affect accuracy. Most meters work best between 50°F and 104°F (10°C to 40°C).

Practical Takeaway: Wash hands with warm water, use a fresh lancet each time, apply enough blood to the test strip, and dispose of lancets in a sharps container to ensure accurate readings and safe handling of supplies.

Understanding Your Results and Target Ranges

Blood glucose readings are measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) in the United States or millimoles per liter (mmol/L) in many other countries. Target glucose ranges depend on several factors, including whether you have diabetes, what type of diabetes you have, your age, and your individual treatment plan. These ranges are general guidelines, and your healthcare provider should give you your personal target range.

For people without diabetes, fasting blood glucose (measured after not eating for at least 8 hours) typically falls between 70 and 100 mg/dL. Random blood glucose readings (at any time of day) are usually below 140 mg/dL. For people with diabetes, target ranges are often higher because the goal is to balance preventing high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) with preventing dangerously low blood glucose (hypoglycemia).

The American Diabetes Association suggests target ranges for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes of 80 to 130 mg/dL before meals and below 180 mg/dL two hours after meals, though individual targets vary. Some people using insulin might have different targets recommended by their doctor. During pregnancy, target ranges are typically stricter to protect the developing baby.

Low blood glucose, below 70 mg/dL, is called hypoglycemia and can cause shakiness, sweating, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. Severe hypoglycemia can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizures. High blood glucose, above 240 mg/dL, is called hyperglycemia and typically develops slowly, causing increased thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue. Very high blood glucose can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (in type 1 diabetes) or hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (in type 2 diabetes), both serious medical emergencies.

Keeping a record of your readings helps you and your healthcare provider identify patterns. For example, you might notice your glucose rises significantly after breakfast but stays stable after lunch, or that stress increases your readings. These patterns inform decisions about medication timing, meal composition, or lifestyle changes.

Practical Takeaway: Learn your personal target glucose range from your healthcare provider, track your readings to spot patterns, and report concerning trends to your doctor rather than making changes to medications or diet on your own.
