Learn How to Change Your VRChat Username

Understanding VRChat Usernames and Account Basics

VRChat is a social virtual reality platform where users create avatars and interact with others in virtual worlds. Your username is your primary identifier in this community—it's what other users see when they interact with you, and it appears on your profile, in chat messages, and during gameplay sessions. Unlike some gaming platforms, VRChat usernames serve as your persistent identity across all virtual environments and social features within the platform.

When you first create a VRChat account, you choose an initial username during the registration process. This username must follow VRChat's community guidelines, meaning it cannot contain profanity, hateful language, or impersonation of known figures. The platform maintains these standards to keep the community welcoming and safe for all users.

Your VRChat account is separate from any other gaming accounts you might have. You cannot transfer usernames between accounts, and each account requires its own unique username. Understanding this structure is important before you decide to change your username, as the process differs from simply updating a display name in other applications.

The username change feature has been available in VRChat for several years, though the specific process and limitations have evolved. Currently, VRChat allows username changes, but there are certain restrictions and considerations you should understand before making changes. These restrictions exist to prevent username squatting, reduce confusion in the community, and maintain account security.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing your username, verify that your new choice follows community guidelines and won't conflict with existing accounts. Write down your current username and keep it saved, as you may want to remember it for account recovery purposes.

Checking Your Current Account Status and Eligibility Requirements

Before you can change your VRChat username, your account must meet certain requirements. These requirements exist to ensure account security and prevent abuse of the username system. First, your account must be in good standing, meaning you haven't received bans or severe violations of community guidelines. VRChat monitors behavior across the platform, and accounts with active violations may be restricted from making changes.

Your account must also be at least a certain age. VRChat requires accounts to exist for a minimum period before username changes become possible. This waiting period typically ranges from several days to a few weeks, depending on VRChat's current policies. This requirement helps prevent the creation and immediate abandonment of accounts with offensive names.

You'll need to have a verified email address connected to your VRChat account. This email serves as your primary recovery method and security measure. If you created your account using a social login (such as Steam or Oculus), you may need to add an email address to your account before proceeding with a username change. You can verify your email by checking your account settings and looking for the email verification section.

Account security status matters as well. If your account has been compromised recently or flagged for suspicious activity, VRChat may temporarily restrict username changes while they review the account. Similarly, if you've violated community guidelines recently, you may not be able to change your username until a cooling-off period has passed. You can check your account status by logging into the VRChat website and reviewing your account dashboard.

Practical Takeaway: Log into your VRChat account on the official website and navigate to your account settings. Review your email verification status and check for any notifications about account restrictions. Ensure your email is current and accessible.

Accessing the Username Change Feature Through the VRChat Website

To change your username, you must use the official VRChat website rather than the VR application itself. Open a web browser and navigate to the VRChat login page. Enter your username and password to access your account. If you've forgotten your password, use the "Forgot Password" link to reset it via email. After logging in successfully, you'll see your account dashboard.

Once you're logged into the VRChat website, look for your account settings. This is typically found in a menu labeled "Settings," "Account," or accessible through your profile. The exact location may vary depending on when VRChat last updated their website interface. Your account settings page will display various options for managing your profile, security, and account information.

Within your account settings, find the section related to your profile or username. This section is sometimes labeled as "Profile Settings," "Display Name," or "Username Settings." VRChat may also display this option in a dedicated "Account Management" area. The interface will show your current username and may provide information about any restrictions on changing it.

Before making changes, review any notifications or messages from VRChat about your account status. The website may display alerts if your account doesn't meet the requirements for a username change. These alerts will explain what you need to do before proceeding. For example, you may see a message stating that your account is too new or that you must wait a certain number of days before changing your username again.

If you're having trouble locating the username change feature, check VRChat's official documentation or help center on their website. The platform maintains support articles that describe where to find account management features. You can also reach out to VRChat support through their official channels if you believe your account should allow username changes but the option isn't appearing.

Practical Takeaway: Bookmark the VRChat website login page and test your login credentials before you decide on a new username. Having confirmed access to your account makes the actual change process smoother.

Selecting an Appropriate New Username and Following Guidelines

Choosing a new username requires thoughtful consideration. Your username represents your identity in the VRChat community and will be visible to thousands of other users. Start by brainstorming several options that reflect your personality or interests. Consider whether you want something serious and professional, creative and humorous, or based on your real name or a nickname you use elsewhere.

Your new username must comply with VRChat's Community Guidelines. Specifically, your username cannot include profanity, slurs, hate speech, or language that demeans others. It also cannot impersonate specific real people, celebrities, or well-known figures. VRChat staff reviews usernames and can force changes for accounts that violate these standards, so it's important to verify your choice complies with these rules before submitting.

Consider the length and memorability of your username. Shorter usernames are easier for other users to remember and type, though VRChat allows for longer names. Names with consistent capitalization or clear word separation tend to be clearer than names with random capitalization or special characters. If you include numbers, make sure they serve a purpose rather than appearing random.

Think about whether your username preference might change over time. Usernames that reference current trends, memes, or temporary interests may feel outdated within a few years. While you can change your username again in the future, there may be waiting periods between changes, so selecting something relatively timeless can reduce the need for future changes.

Avoid usernames that might be considered offensive to others or that reference controversial topics, even if not explicitly against the rules. VRChat is a diverse community with users from many backgrounds and cultures. A username that seems acceptable to you might offend others or attract negative attention. When in doubt, choose something neutral and inclusive.

Practical Takeaway: Write down three to five username options and evaluate each against VRChat's Community Guidelines. Ask yourself if each name will still feel appropriate a year from now. Test how each name sounds when spoken aloud or appears in writing.

Completing the Username Change Process and Verification

Once you've confirmed your account meets requirements and selected an appropriate new username, locate the username change option in your account settings. This will typically be a text field where you can enter your new username, along with a button to submit the change. Type your new username carefully, as you want to confirm you're making the exact change you intend. Double-check the spelling and formatting before proceeding.

Before confirming the change, VRChat may ask you to verify your password again as a security measure. This requirement confirms that you, the account owner, are deliberately making this change and not someone who has gained unauthorized access to your account. Enter your password exactly as it is—passwords are case-sensitive, so verify that Caps Lock is not accidentally enabled.

After submitting your username change request, the system will process your change. In most cases, the change takes effect immediately or within a few minutes. VRChat will send a confirmation email to the address associated with your account notifying you that your username has been changed. This email serves as a
