Learn How to Change Your Screen Picture on Devices

Understanding Screen Picture Basics Across Different Devices

Your screen picture, also called a wallpaper or background image, is the visual display that appears on your device when you're not using any apps or programs. This background serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose. On smartphones and tablets, the screen picture typically shows behind your app icons and widgets. On computers, the wallpaper appears on your desktop when all windows are minimized or closed. The screen picture is one of the first things you see when you turn on your device or unlock it, making it a personal element that many people customize to reflect their preferences.

Different types of devices store and display screen pictures in different ways. Smartphones and tablets use operating systems like Android and iOS, which have their own methods for managing wallpapers. Desktop and laptop computers running Windows, macOS, or Linux each have distinct processes for changing backgrounds. Despite these differences, the basic concept remains the same: you select an image file and set it as your device's background display.

Screen pictures can be static images that don't change, or they can be animated or dynamic, meaning they shift and change over time. Some devices let you set different images for your lock screen (the screen you see before entering your password) and your home screen (the main screen after you unlock). Understanding these distinctions helps you make informed choices about which image to use where.

The image file formats that work for screen pictures typically include JPG, PNG, and BMP files. Most devices come with built-in image galleries or apps that let you browse files on your device. Some people use photos they've taken themselves, while others choose images from online sources, manufacturer-provided collections, or design apps.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing your screen picture, identify which part of your device you want to customize (lock screen, home screen, or desktop) and gather an image file you'd like to use. This preparation makes the actual process much faster.

Changing Your Screen Picture on Android Smartphones and Tablets

Android devices, which include phones and tablets made by Samsung, Google, OnePlus, and many other manufacturers, offer straightforward methods for changing your screen picture. The process typically begins by accessing your device's settings menu. On most Android devices, you'll find the settings app in your app drawer or by swiping down from the top of your screen and looking for a settings icon. Once in settings, look for an option labeled "Display," "Home screen," "Wallpaper," or "Themes," depending on your device's manufacturer and Android version.

Many Android devices let you set different images for your lock screen and home screen. To change your home screen wallpaper, navigate to Settings, then find the Display or Wallpaper option. You'll typically see a button that says "Wallpaper," "Change wallpaper," or "Set wallpaper." Tap this option, and your device will show you available choices. These often include pre-loaded wallpapers that came with your device, a gallery of images from the internet, and access to photos stored on your phone or tablet.

When you select this option, your device usually opens a file browser or gallery where you can choose from categories like "Nature," "Abstract," "Colors," or "My Photos." If you want to use a photo you've taken, select the option for your device's photo gallery or file manager. Navigate to the folder containing your image, select the photo you want, and your device will show you a preview. At this point, you can move or zoom the image to position it how you like it. Once you're satisfied with the preview, look for a button labeled "Set wallpaper," "Apply," or "Save" to complete the change.

To change your lock screen wallpaper separately, follow a similar process but look specifically for "Lock screen" settings rather than home screen options. Some Android devices also have a "Themes" app that lets you change multiple visual elements at once, including wallpaper, icons, and colors. These theme apps can be found in your device's app store.

Practical Takeaway: On Android devices, start by opening Settings and searching for "Wallpaper" using your device's search function if you can't immediately find the wallpaper option. This shortcut works on most Android versions and saves time navigating through menus.

Changing Your Screen Picture on iPhones and iPads

Apple's iOS operating system, used on iPhones and iPads, has a dedicated process for changing screen pictures that differs from Android devices. On iOS, you can set separate wallpapers for your lock screen and home screen, giving you more customization options. To begin, open the Settings app on your device—this is typically found on your home screen and looks like a gear icon. Once in Settings, look for an option labeled "Wallpaper" or "Display and Brightness," then select "Wallpaper."

When you tap into the Wallpaper section, iOS shows you your current lock screen and home screen wallpapers, with thumbnails displayed at the top. You'll see a button that says "Add New Wallpaper" or a plus icon. Tapping this opens options for selecting a new image. iOS provides several categories of pre-designed wallpapers, including "Dynamic," "Stills," "Collections," and "Photos." The Dynamic wallpapers are animated and change subtly over time, creating a more interactive background experience. The Stills category contains static images in various styles and colors.

If you want to use a personal photo, select the "Photos" option. This opens your photo library, allowing you to navigate to any photo stored on your device or in iCloud. Once you've selected a photo, iOS displays a preview where you can pinch, zoom, and move the image to position it exactly how you want it to appear. Below the preview, you'll see a "Customize" button that lets you add color filters, change the style, or add widgets to your lock screen. After positioning your image, tap "Add" to save it, then choose whether to apply it to your lock screen, home screen, or both.

One useful feature of iOS is the ability to create smart stacks of wallpapers that automatically change throughout the day based on the time. You can also use the Focus feature to set specific wallpapers that appear when certain Focus modes are active, such as Work or Sleep mode.

Practical Takeaway: On iPhones and iPads, use the Photos app option to set wallpapers, as it gives you the most control over image positioning and sizing. iOS's preview feature lets you see exactly how your chosen image will look before you commit to the change.

Changing Your Screen Picture on Windows Computers

Windows computers, whether running Windows 10, Windows 11, or earlier versions, allow you to customize your desktop background through the Settings app or by right-clicking directly on your desktop. The most direct method is to right-click on an empty area of your desktop—away from any icons or windows—and select "Personalize" or "Change background settings" from the menu that appears. This opens your Personalization settings directly to the background options.

In the background settings, you'll see several choices for what type of background you want. The most common option is "Picture," which lets you select a single image file. Windows also offers "Solid color" backgrounds, which display a single color, and "Slideshow," which cycles through multiple images over time. To use the Picture option, click "Browse" to navigate to a folder containing an image file. Windows accepts common image formats like JPG, PNG, and BMP. Once you select an image, Windows shows you how it will look on your screen, and you can adjust settings like how the image is positioned (fill, fit, stretch, tile, or center).

If you prefer not to navigate through settings, you can also change your background by right-clicking directly on an image file stored on your computer. Most image viewing programs have an option to "Set as background" or "Set as desktop background" in their right-click menu. This method is particularly quick if you already know which image you want to use.

Windows 11 introduced additional personalization options, including the ability to create custom theme packs that change your background along with accent colors and sounds. You can also access Windows's built-in collection of backgrounds by going to Settings, then Personalization, then Background, and selecting from Microsoft's curated collection of images. Some of these images update seasonally.

Practical Takeaway: For the fastest method on Windows, locate an image file you want to use in File Explorer, right-click it, and
