Learn How to Change Your Phone's Lock Screen

Understanding Lock Screen Basics Across Different Phone Types

Your phone's lock screen is the first thing you see when you wake up your device. It appears before you enter your passcode or use biometric authentication like fingerprints or face recognition. The lock screen serves as both a security feature and a way to personalize your device with information that matters to you.

Most smartphones fall into two main categories: Apple iPhones and Android devices. Each operates differently when it comes to customization options. iPhones running iOS 16 and newer offer more extensive lock screen personalization than previous versions, including the ability to change fonts, colors, and widget placements. Android phones vary by manufacturer—Samsung devices, Google Pixel phones, and other brands each have their own customization systems. Understanding which type of phone you own is the first step toward making changes.

Lock screens typically display time and date by default. Depending on your settings, they may also show notifications from apps, weather information, battery percentage, and other status indicators. Some phones allow you to add widgets—small app windows that show live information without requiring you to unlock your phone. The specific options available depend on your device model and operating system version.

Before making changes, you should know where the settings menu is located on your phone. On iPhones, this is usually found in the Settings app under "Display & Brightness" or "Lock Screen." On Android devices, look in Settings, then navigate to sections labeled "Display," "Home Screen," or "Wallpaper," depending on your manufacturer. Taking time to locate these settings first prevents confusion later.

Practical Takeaway: Identify your phone type and locate your settings menu before attempting any changes. This foundation makes all customization steps clearer and faster.

How to Change Your iPhone Lock Screen

iPhone users with iOS 16 or later have significantly more control over their lock screen appearance than previous generations. The process begins by opening the Settings app and selecting "Lock Screen" from the main menu. If you don't see this option, verify that your device is running iOS 16 or a newer version by checking Settings > General > About.

To change your lock screen wallpaper, long-press (hold your finger) on your current lock screen until a menu appears. This action reveals several options: "Customize," "Edit," or "Lock Screen" depending on your iOS version. Select the option that allows you to modify the background. From there, you can choose from Apple's built-in wallpaper collections, your photo library, or use the Weather, Astronomy, or Emoji options. Each choice offers different visual styles. The Weather option displays your local conditions as a background, while Astronomy shows a rotating view of Earth or the moon.

Font and color customization is another major feature. After selecting your wallpaper, tap the color or font option to see what's available. You can change the color of the time display, adjust text style, and modify the appearance of notifications. Some wallpapers limit your color options to maintain readability, so different wallpapers may offer different color choices.

Widget placement is also customizable on newer iPhones. Below the time display, you can add small widgets that show information like weather, calendar events, fitness rings, or battery status without unlocking your phone. Tap the area below the time to see which widgets are available. You can add multiple widgets, but space is limited—typically two or three depending on their size.

If you want multiple lock screen layouts, you can create additional lock screens with different designs and switch between them. This means you might have a professional-looking lock screen for work and a more personal one for personal use. Each lock screen setup saves independently.

Practical Takeaway: On iPhones, use the long-press method on your current lock screen to access customization options, then work through wallpaper, color, font, and widget choices one at a time rather than trying to change everything at once.

Customizing Your Android Lock Screen

Android lock screen customization varies by manufacturer, but the general process is similar across most devices. Google Pixel phones, Samsung Galaxy devices, and other Android phones typically have their settings located in the Settings app under "Display" or "Lock Screen." Some manufacturers place these options under "Wallpaper & Style" or a similar label. Open your Settings app and look for these sections—the exact wording depends on your phone model.

To change your Android lock screen wallpaper, find the lock screen settings and look for an option labeled "Wallpaper," "Lock Screen Wallpaper," or "Set Lock Screen." Tap this option to view available wallpapers. You'll usually see categories like solid colors, patterns, images from your gallery, or pre-loaded wallpaper collections. Select the type you prefer, then choose a specific image or design. Many Android phones show you a preview before you confirm your selection.

Some Android devices, particularly Samsung phones, offer lock screen style options. These may include different clock designs—digital, analog, or creative fonts. You might find options to adjust the clock's position on the screen or choose between different information displays. These settings are usually labeled "Clock Style" or "Lock Screen Style."

Notification display is another customizable element on Android devices. You can choose whether notifications appear on your lock screen and how much information they show. Some phones let you hide notification content for privacy, showing only that a notification exists without revealing its details until you unlock your phone. This is a security feature worth considering if you receive sensitive messages.

Google Pixel phones introduced "Magic Eraser" functionality that lets you remove unwanted objects from lock screen wallpapers before setting them. If you're using a Pixel device, this tool may appear when you select an image from your gallery as your lock screen wallpaper.

Practical Takeaway: On Android, search your Settings app for "Lock Screen" or "Wallpaper" to find the customization menu, then preview changes before confirming them to ensure you're happy with the result.

Adding Widgets and Information to Your Lock Screen

Widgets are one of the most useful features available on modern lock screens. They display live information without requiring you to unlock your phone, letting you check things like weather, calendar events, fitness progress, or news headlines at a glance. Widget availability and functionality differ between iPhones and Android devices.

On iPhones with iOS 16 and newer, widgets appear below the time on your lock screen. To add them, long-press your lock screen and look for a "+" button or "Add Widget" option. Tap this to see which apps have lock screen widgets available. Common widget options include Weather, Calendar, Fitness, News, Reminders, and Battery. Select an app, choose the widget size if options are available, and tap "Add." You can add multiple widgets, though screen space limits how many fit.

Android widgets work differently depending on your phone. Some Android devices allow widgets on the lock screen itself, while others restrict them to the home screen. If your Android phone supports lock screen widgets, access this through Settings > Lock Screen > Widgets or a similar path. Tap "Add Widget" or a "+" button, then select from available apps. Not all apps offer lock screen widget functionality, so your options depend on what you have installed.

Third-party apps can expand widget options on both platforms. For example, KWGT and Zooper Widget on Android provide customizable widgets that work on lock screens. On iPhone, the number of available widgets has grown significantly since iOS 16's introduction, with developers regularly releasing lock screen widget options for popular apps.

Consider what information you actually need visible without unlocking your phone. Weather is useful if you check conditions often. Calendar events help you see your day's schedule. Fitness rings or step counts work well if you track health. Don't add so many widgets that they clutter your lock screen—two or three relevant ones usually works better than five or six.

Practical Takeaway: Choose one to three widgets that show information you check regularly, then arrange them to leave enough space for your wallpaper and clock to remain visible and aesthetically pleasing.

Adjusting Security and Notification Display Settings

While personalizing your lock screen's appearance, you should also consider security and privacy settings that affect what displays there. Your lock screen is visible to anyone who sees your phone, so balancing personalization with privacy protection matters.
