Learn How to Change Your Password Online

Why Changing Your Password Matters for Online Safety

Your password is like a key to your digital life. It protects your email, bank accounts, social media profiles, and personal information from people who shouldn't see it. According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, over 800,000 complaints about cybercrime were filed in 2022, with many involving compromised passwords. When you change your password regularly, you reduce the chance that someone else can access your accounts.

Hackers use several methods to get passwords. They might use programs that guess common passwords, trick you into revealing your password through fake emails, or buy lists of passwords from data breaches. When a major website gets hacked, criminals can access millions of passwords at once. If you reuse the same password across multiple sites, one breach could give hackers entry to all your accounts.

Changing your password every few months is a basic security practice recommended by organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This becomes even more important if you've noticed suspicious activity on an account, received a notification of a data breach, or shared your password with someone else who no longer needs it.

Different types of accounts may have different security needs. Your email password is particularly important because most other accounts use email for password recovery. Your banking and financial accounts need strong protection because they control your money. Social media accounts, while often less critical, still contain personal information and can be used to impersonate you.

Practical takeaway: Plan to change passwords for your most important accounts (email, banking, medical records) at least twice a year. Make a calendar reminder so you don't forget.

Creating a Strong Password You Can Actually Remember

A strong password is your first line of defense against unauthorized access. According to cybersecurity research, passwords that are at least 12 characters long and use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols are significantly harder to crack. A computer trying random combinations might need millions of attempts to break a truly strong password, but could crack a weak one in seconds.

However, creating passwords that are both strong and memorable is challenging. Many people make passwords that are easy to guess: their pet's name, their birthday, their child's name, or simple patterns like "123456" or "password." Studies show that over 25% of people use passwords from the 100 most common passwords ever used. These are discovered within moments by hackers using automated tools.

One method that works well is creating a passphrase—a sentence or phrase that only you know. For example, you might use "ILove2DrinkCoffeeBefore9am!" or "MyDog8Shoes-InThePark2023." This approach creates a long password that's easier to remember than random characters but still strong because it's unique and not found in password dictionaries. The key is making it something meaningful to you but not something obvious to others, like your public social media posts.

Another approach is the substitution method, where you replace certain letters with numbers or symbols: replacing "a" with "@", "e" with "3", "i" with "!", or "o" with "0". If your passphrase is "coffee time is best time," you might write it as "C0ff33T!m3!s83stT!m3." This makes it longer and more complex while still being based on something you can recall.

When you're changing your password, avoid patterns you've used before. If your old password was "Password2023!" don't just change it to "Password2024!" Hackers who obtained your old password will try obvious variations. Similarly, don't use your account name, username, or any part of the website name in your password.

Practical takeaway: Create a passphrase based on a personal but not publicly known memory or event. Write it down (securely, not on a sticky note at your desk), and practice typing it a few times before confirming the password change is complete.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Changing Your Password

While each website and service has slightly different layouts, the general process for changing your password is similar. Most of the time, you'll find the password change option in your account settings or security settings. Here's the typical process: First, log into your account normally with your current password. Look for a menu—usually in the top right corner—that says "Account," "Settings," "My Account," or shows your name or a gear icon. Click that menu.

Within that menu, look for options like "Password," "Change Password," "Security," or "Account Security." Click on that option. The website will typically ask you to enter your current password to verify it's really you making this change. This is an important security step. Enter your current password exactly as it is (passwords are case-sensitive, meaning "Password" is different from "password"). Then you'll see fields for your new password and to confirm the new password by typing it again.

Type your new password in the first field. As you type, many websites show a strength indicator—usually a colored bar or words like "weak," "fair," or "strong"—that tells you how secure your password is. Aim for "strong." Type the same new password again in the confirmation field to make sure there are no typos. Double-check that both match before clicking "Save," "Update," "Confirm," or whatever button the website uses to complete the change.

Different websites have different requirements. Some require at least 8 characters; others require 12 or more. Some require numbers and symbols; others don't. Some won't let you use any part of your username or email address in the password. Pay attention to any requirements listed on the screen before creating your password so your new password actually meets the criteria and gets accepted.

For email accounts specifically, the process is similar but especially important. For Gmail, click your profile picture in the top right, select "Manage your Google Account," go to the "Security" tab, scroll down to "Your password," and click "Change password." For Outlook or Hotmail, go to account.microsoft.com, select "Security," choose "Change your password," and follow the prompts. For Yahoo Mail, go to account.yahoo.com, select "Account security," and click "Change password."

Practical takeaway: Before you start, have your new password written down or memorized. Don't create it as you go—prepare it first so the process moves smoothly and you don't get locked out trying to enter a password you're unsure about.

What to Do If You Can't Remember Your Password

Sometimes people try to change their password, but then can't complete the process because they forget their current password. Or they might not have accessed an account in so long that they genuinely don't remember what password they set. Most websites have a recovery process for this exact situation, though it requires extra steps to verify your identity.

Look for a link that says "Can't sign in?" or "Forgot password?" on the login page. Click that link. The website will ask you to enter your username or email address associated with the account. You'll then receive a message (usually in your email, but sometimes via text message) with a recovery link. Click that link to create a new password.

For this process to work, you need to still have access to the recovery email address or phone number registered to the account. If you've lost access to your recovery email, some websites offer additional verification methods like security questions you set up when you created the account, or uploading a photo ID. Keep this in mind when you create a new account—set a recovery email that you'll maintain for years and answer security questions honestly but not with answers someone could guess from your social media.

Some services use two-factor authentication as part of their recovery process. This means they send a code to your phone or another device, and you need to enter that code to prove it's really you. While this adds an extra step, it makes your account much harder for someone else to break into. If you've set up two-factor authentication on an account, make sure you still have access to the phone number or authentication app you used when setting it up.

For financial accounts like banks and investment accounts, password recovery is more strict. You might need to answer several security questions, provide your Social Security number, or even visit a branch in person. This is intentional—banks protect your money more carefully than social media protects your photos. If you're locked out of a financial account, contact customer service by phone using the number on your official statements, not a number from an internet search
