Learn How to Change Your LinkedIn Password

Understanding Your LinkedIn Account Security

Your LinkedIn password is one of the most important pieces of information protecting your professional profile and network. LinkedIn is a platform where millions of professionals share career information, connect with colleagues, and explore job opportunities. Your password acts as the main barrier between your account and unauthorized access. When someone has your password, they can view your connections, send messages on your behalf, update your profile information, and potentially damage your professional reputation.

LinkedIn stores passwords using encryption technology, which means the company doesn't actually see your password in its original form. However, if your password is weak or shared, hackers may be able to gain access to your account through various methods. This is why changing your password regularly—especially if you suspect any unusual activity—is an important security practice.

Many professionals use the same password across multiple websites, which creates additional risk. If one website experiences a security breach, hackers may try that same password on other platforms, including LinkedIn. This practice, called credential stuffing, affects millions of accounts annually. By maintaining a unique, strong password on LinkedIn, you reduce the likelihood that your account could be compromised through breaches on other sites.

Understanding password security also means knowing what makes a password strong. A strong LinkedIn password typically contains uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. LinkedIn requires passwords to be at least 6 characters long, but security professionals recommend using longer passwords—12 characters or more—to provide better protection against attempts to guess or crack your password.

Takeaway: Your LinkedIn password protects access to your professional identity and network. Regularly changing your password and using unique, strong passwords across different platforms significantly reduces security risks.

Step-by-Step Process for Changing Your Password on Desktop

Changing your LinkedIn password on a computer is a straightforward process that takes just a few minutes. The method works the same whether you're using Windows, Mac, or Linux, and it applies to any web browser including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Here's the detailed process to follow.

First, log into your LinkedIn account using your current email address and password. Once you're logged in, look for your profile photo or avatar, which typically appears in the top right corner of the screen. Click on this photo to open a dropdown menu with several options. From this menu, select "Settings & privacy." This opens your account settings page, where you can manage various aspects of your LinkedIn account.

After clicking "Settings & privacy," you'll see several tabs or sections. Look for the "Account" tab and click on it. Under the Account section, you should see an option labeled "Change password" or "Password." Click on this option. LinkedIn will then ask you to enter your current password for verification purposes. This security step confirms that you are the account owner and not someone else trying to access your account without permission.

After entering your current password, LinkedIn displays fields where you can enter your new password. Type your new password in the first field. Then, type the same new password again in the confirmation field below it. Make sure both entries match exactly—if they don't, LinkedIn will notify you and you'll need to try again. Before submitting, consider whether your new password meets strong password criteria: mixing uppercase and lowercase letters, including numbers, adding special characters like ! @ # $ % ^ & *, and using a length of at least 12 characters.

Once you've entered your new password twice, look for a "Save" or "Change password" button at the bottom of the form. Click this button to complete the password change. LinkedIn will confirm that your password has been updated. You may also receive an email notification at your registered email address confirming that your LinkedIn password was changed. If you didn't make this change, this email serves as an alert that someone else may have accessed your account, and you should change your password again immediately.

Takeaway: Access your password settings through your profile photo menu, then navigate to Settings & privacy > Account > Change password. Follow the on-screen prompts to enter your current password and your new password twice to confirm.

Changing Your Password on Mobile Devices

LinkedIn offers both iOS and Android mobile apps that allow you to manage your account on smartphones and tablets. The password change process on mobile is similar to the desktop version but uses a slightly different interface due to the smaller screen size. Whether you use an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, you can change your password directly through the mobile app.

To start, open the LinkedIn mobile app and ensure you're logged into your account. Look for the profile icon or your profile photo, which typically appears at the bottom of the screen on iOS devices or in a menu accessible through a hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) on Android devices. Tap on your profile photo or name to open your profile menu. From this menu, scroll down until you find "Settings & privacy" and tap on it.

On the Settings & privacy screen, you'll see various options arranged by category. Look for the section labeled "Account" or scroll until you find an option related to passwords or security. Tap on "Password" or "Change password." The mobile app will then display a screen asking you to enter your current password. Type your current password in the field provided. This verification step ensures that the person making changes to the account is authorized to do so.

After confirming your current password, the screen displays two fields for your new password. Enter your new password in the first field, making sure it's something you'll remember but that others couldn't easily guess. Repeat the password in the second field to confirm you typed it correctly. Both entries must match for the change to process successfully. Take this opportunity to create a password that's significantly different from your previous one—for example, if your old password started with numbers, consider starting your new password with letters instead.

Once you've entered your new password twice, look for a "Save," "Confirm," or "Change Password" button. Tap this button to finalize the change. The app will confirm that your password update was successful. As with the desktop version, you'll receive a confirmation email at your registered email address. This notification allows you to verify that you made the change and alerts you to any unauthorized access attempts on your account.

Takeaway: On mobile devices, access your profile menu, navigate to Settings & privacy, find the Password option, and follow the prompts to enter your current and new password twice before confirming the change.

Creating and Remembering Strong Passwords

After you change your LinkedIn password, you'll need to remember it to log in during future sessions. Many people struggle with password management, leading them to either forget passwords or reuse weak passwords across multiple sites. Understanding how to create passwords that are both strong and memorable helps you maintain security without constant password reset requests.

One method for creating strong, memorable passwords involves using a passphrase—a combination of random words strung together. For example, instead of a password like "Linkedin2024," you might use "BluePiano$Sunset#Learning." This type of password contains uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters while remaining somewhat memorable because it uses recognizable words. Passphrases are typically longer than simple passwords, which increases their strength against cracking attempts.

Another approach involves personalizing a strong password formula while avoiding easily guessable information. Never use your birthday, anniversary, pet's name, or spouse's name in your password, as these details are often publicly available on social media or can be researched by someone attempting to access your account. Avoid sequential numbers like "123456" or keyboard patterns like "qwerty." Similarly, avoid simple substitutions like replacing "E" with "3" or "O" with "0," as hackers regularly test these common variations.

For storing and managing passwords, you have several options. Password manager applications—such as Bitwarden, 1Password, LastPass, or Dashlane—securely store your passwords in an encrypted vault. You only need to remember one strong master password to access all your other passwords. These tools can generate random strong passwords for you and automatically fill them in when you visit websites. Many of these applications offer free versions with basic features or paid versions with additional security capabilities. Alternatively, you can write passwords down and store them in a secure physical location, such as a locked drawer in your home, though this method is less convenient for frequent access.

If you choose to remember your password without a password manager, write it down immediately after creating it and store the note somewhere safe. Test logging out and logging back in with your new password within a few minutes of changing it. This immediate testing ensures your password was entered correctly and helps cement it in your memory.
