Learn How to Change Your Google Account Password

Understanding Why You Might Change Your Google Account Password

Your Google Account password is the key to accessing many services. When you log into Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, Google Photos, and other Google products, you use this same password. Understanding when and why you might change your password helps you protect your account from unauthorized access.

There are several reasons people change their Google passwords. If you suspect someone else knows your password, changing it prevents them from accessing your account. Maybe you used the same password on multiple websites, and another site experienced a data breach. Perhaps you haven't changed your password in a long time and want to create a fresh one. You might also change your password after lending your device to someone else or after using a public computer to access your account.

Security experts generally recommend changing your password periodically, though there is debate about how often. Some suggest changing it once or twice per year as a precaution. Others recommend changing it only when there is a specific reason to do so, such as suspecting unauthorized access or after a security incident. The important thing is to create a strong password that is difficult for others to guess.

A strong password typically contains at least 12 characters and includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using common words, birthdays, names of family members, or other predictable information. The longer and more random your password, the harder it is for someone to crack it through guessing or using computer programs.

Takeaway: Knowing when you need to change your password helps you maintain account security. Consider changing your password if you suspect a breach, if you have used it on other websites, or if you haven't changed it recently.

Preparing to Change Your Password

Before you change your Google Account password, there are several preparation steps to take. First, make sure you know your current password. You will need to enter it during the password change process to confirm your identity. If you have forgotten your current password, you will need to go through Google's account recovery process before you can change it.

Next, think about what your new password will be. Don't use a password you have used before, as this defeats the purpose of changing it. Also avoid using a password that is similar to your old password with just one or two characters changed. Write down your new password in a secure location, or use a password manager to store it. A password manager is a program or service that securely stores your passwords so you don't have to remember them yourself.

Check which devices you use to access your Google Account. When you change your password, you will be signed out of your account on all devices. This includes smartphones, tablets, computers, and any other devices where you have signed in. After you change your password, you will need to sign back in on these devices using your new password. This process typically takes just a few minutes per device.

Consider setting up additional security measures for your account before changing your password. Google offers a feature called two-factor authentication, which requires a second form of identification in addition to your password when you sign in. This might be a code sent to your phone, a fingerprint scan, or a security key. Having this extra layer of security means that even if someone learns your password, they cannot access your account without the second form of identification.

Takeaway: Prepare by knowing your current password, choosing a strong new password, and being ready to sign back into your devices. Consider enabling two-factor authentication to add extra security to your account.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Changing Your Password on a Computer

To change your Google Account password using a computer, start by opening a web browser and going to the Google Account website. You can find this by visiting myaccount.google.com or by searching "Google Account" in your web browser. Once you arrive at the Google Account page, look for a button or option that says "Sign in" if you are not already logged in to your account. Enter your email address and password to sign in.

After you sign in, you should see your Google Account dashboard. On the left side of the screen, you will see a menu with several options. Look for an option that says "Security" or a lock icon. Click on this option to go to the Security page. This page shows information about how your account is protected and what security features you have turned on.

On the Security page, look for an option that says "Password" or "Change password." This is usually near the top of the security settings. Click on this option. Google will ask you to confirm your identity by entering your current password again. This is a safety measure to make sure that you really are the owner of the account and not someone else trying to change your password. Type in your current password and click "Next."

Now you will see a screen where you can enter your new password. There will be two fields: one where you type your new password and another where you type it again to confirm. Make sure both entries match. Google will show you how strong your password is as you type it. Green text usually means your password is strong, while red or yellow text means it could be stronger. After you have entered your new password twice, click the "Change Password" button.

Google will confirm that your password has been changed successfully. You will see a message saying something like "Your password has been changed." You may also see a message telling you that you have been signed out of your account on all other devices. This is normal and expected. From this point forward, use your new password to sign into your Google Account.

Takeaway: Change your password by signing into myaccount.google.com, going to Security settings, selecting Password, confirming your current password, and entering your new password twice.

Changing Your Password on Mobile Devices

You can also change your Google Account password using a smartphone or tablet. The process is similar to using a computer, but the screen layout is different because mobile devices have smaller screens. On an Android phone, you can often change your password directly through the Settings app. Open Settings, scroll down to find "Google" or "Accounts," and tap it. Select your Google Account email address, then tap "Manage your Google Account."

Once you are in your Google Account settings, look for the "Security" tab at the top of the screen. On smaller mobile screens, you might need to scroll to find all the tabs. Tap on the Security tab. You will then see your security settings. Scroll down until you find the "Password" option and tap on it. Google will ask you to sign in again to confirm your identity. Enter your current password.

After confirming your identity, you will see the password change screen. Enter your new password in the first field. You must enter it a second time in the confirmation field to make sure you typed it correctly. As you type, Google shows you whether your password strength is acceptable. Tap the "Change Password" button or "Update Password" button, depending on what your device shows.

On an iPhone or iPad, the process is slightly different because Apple's iOS operating system does not have a built-in Google Account settings app. Instead, open a web browser like Safari and go to myaccount.google.com. Sign in with your Google Account email and password. From there, follow the same steps as you would on a computer: go to Security, find Password, confirm your current password, and enter your new password twice.

After you change your password on a mobile device, you will be signed out of the Google apps on that device. You will need to sign back in using your new password. This typically happens automatically, and the device will prompt you to sign in again the next time you open a Google app like Gmail or Google Drive.

Takeaway: On Android phones, use Settings to access your Google Account, then go to Security and Password. On iPhones or iPads, use a web browser to visit myaccount.google.com and follow the computer instructions.

What Happens After You Change Your Password

Once you have successfully changed your Google Account password, several things happen automatically. First, you are signed out of your Google Account on all devices except the one you are currently using. This includes computers, smartphones, tablets, and any other devices where you have previously signed in. This sign-out is a security feature that prevents someone who had your old password from continuing to use your account on other devices.
