Learn How to Change Your Epic Games Account Name

Understanding Epic Games Account Names and Why You Might Change Yours

Your Epic Games account name is the username you use to log in to the Epic Games Launcher and access games like Fortnite, Rocket League, and other titles in Epic's library. This name appears to other players when you're playing online multiplayer games and shows up on leaderboards, friend lists, and in-game chat. Your Epic Games account name is different from your display name—the display name is what other players see during gameplay, while your account name is your login credential.

People change their Epic Games account names for various reasons. Some players want a fresh start and feel their original username no longer represents them. Others may have chosen a name in haste years ago and now prefer something different. Some players want to distance themselves from old gaming history or simply want a name that better reflects their current interests or gaming style. Parents sometimes create accounts for their children and later want to update the username to something more appropriate as the child grows.

Understanding the difference between an account name and a display name is important before making changes. Your account name is permanent in many cases—Epic Games does have restrictions on how often you can change it. Your display name, by contrast, can be changed more freely and is what appears in-game to other players. If you're primarily concerned about how other players perceive your username during gameplay, you may only need to change your display name rather than your account name.

Before attempting any name change, check your current account settings to see when you last changed your username. Epic Games typically limits account name changes to once per year, though this policy may vary. Knowing your change history helps you understand whether you're currently eligible to make an update or whether you'll need to wait before the system allows another change.

Practical Takeaway: Clarify whether you want to change your account name (login username) or your display name (what other players see in-game), as these require different processes and have different restrictions.

Step-by-Step Process for Accessing Your Account Settings

To change your Epic Games account name, you'll need to navigate to your account settings through the official Epic Games website. Start by opening a web browser and going to www.epicgames.com. Look for the login option, usually located in the upper right corner of the page. Enter your current email address and password to log into your account. If you've enabled two-factor authentication—which Epic Games recommends for security—you'll need to complete that verification step before proceeding.

Once you're logged in, locate your account profile settings. This is typically found by clicking on your username or profile icon in the upper right corner of the website. A dropdown menu should appear with several options. Look for a link that says "Account" or "Settings." Click on this option to enter your account management area. You should now see various sections related to your account, including personal information, security settings, and connected games.

In your account settings, you'll need to find the section specifically labeled "General" or "Account Name." This section displays your current Epic Games account username along with other basic account information like your email address and account creation date. Take a moment to review what information is shown here. Some accounts may show a "Change Username" button directly in this section, while others may require you to look for a pencil icon or "Edit" button next to your username field.

Before making any changes, ensure you're using a secure internet connection. Avoid making account changes on public WiFi networks or shared computers. If you're using a shared device, make sure you're logged out completely after you finish, and consider changing your password after making an account name change as an extra security measure. Keep your account information updated and verify that your recovery email address and phone number are current.

Practical Takeaway: Navigate to www.epicgames.com, log in with your credentials, click your profile icon, select Account or Settings, and locate the General section where your username appears.

Restrictions, Rules, and Important Limitations on Name Changes

Epic Games enforces several rules about account name changes to maintain order and prevent abuse of the system. Most importantly, you can only change your account name once per year. This means if you've changed your username within the past twelve months, you'll need to wait until that year has passed before making another change. The system tracks the date of your last change, and you won't be able to initiate another change until the anniversary date arrives.

There are also content restrictions on what usernames are allowed. Your new account name cannot contain profanity, slurs, or offensive language. Epic Games has filters and review systems in place to prevent names that violate their community standards. Additionally, your username cannot impersonate others, particularly public figures, celebrities, or gaming influencers. You also cannot use usernames that appear to be official Epic Games accounts or attempt to mimic company staff members. Names that reference illegal activities or drug use are also prohibited.

Your account name must meet certain technical requirements. Usernames typically need to be between 3 and 16 characters long, though this may vary. The name can usually contain letters, numbers, and certain symbols like underscores or hyphens, but spaces are typically not allowed. Special characters are usually limited to avoid technical issues. If you attempt to use a name that's already taken by another player, the system will inform you and ask you to choose a different option.

It's important to note that changing your account name does not affect your games, achievements, progress, or connected platforms. Your Fortnite cosmetics, game progress on other titles, and everything tied to your account remains exactly the same. However, you should inform friends and teammates of your new username if they need to look you up or add you to parties. Some players might have you added under your old username, but this connection typically remains intact even after a name change.

Practical Takeaway: Remember that you can change your account name only once per year, your new name must follow content guidelines, and the change won't affect your game progress or cosmetics.

Changing Your Display Name Versus Your Account Name

Many players don't realize that Epic Games offers two separate username options: your account name and your display name. Understanding the difference between these two can help you decide which one—or both—you want to change. Your account name is your login credentials; it's what you enter along with your password to access your account. This is the name that appears in official Epic Games communications and account management areas. Your display name is what other players see when they encounter you in-game during Fortnite matches, in lobbies, on friend lists, and in other multiplayer gaming environments.

The key advantage of having both options is flexibility. If you want other players to perceive you differently in-game without committing to a permanent yearly change to your account login credentials, you can simply change your display name instead. Display names can typically be changed more frequently than account names—sometimes as often as once per month—making them a better option for players who like to refresh their gaming identity more regularly.

To change your display name, navigate to the same account settings area where you found your account name. Look for a section labeled "General" or search for "Display Name" specifically. You should see your current display name listed, and there will likely be an "Edit" option or pencil icon next to it. Click on this to open an editing field where you can type your new display name. The same content restrictions apply here—no profanity, no impersonation, no offensive language—but the frequency restriction is typically more lenient than with account names.

Many players use their display name to express personality or current gaming interests while keeping their account name consistent for login purposes. For example, you might have an account name like "player_2019" but a display name like "ShadowNinja" to show other players. This approach gives you the best of both worlds: a stable login credential and a fun, changeable gaming identity. Consider which change would better serve your goals before making your decision.

Practical Takeaway: If you want to change how other players see you in-game without waiting for an annual account name change, modify your display name instead, which typically has fewer frequency restrictions.

Troubleshooting Common Issues During Name Changes

Sometimes players encounter problems when trying to change their account name. One common issue is receiving an error message stating that the username is already taken. This simply means another player has already claimed that specific name. The system doesn't allow duplicate usernames because each account name must be unique for login purposes. If you encounter this situation, try slightly modifying
