Learn How to Change Your Device Screen Background

Understanding Screen Backgrounds Across Different Device Types

Screen backgrounds, also called wallpapers, are the images or patterns that display behind your apps and icons on mobile devices, tablets, and computers. Nearly every modern device allows you to customize this visual element. According to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center, approximately 67% of smartphone users have changed their device background at least once. The background you choose appears on your home screen, lock screen, or both, depending on your device and operating system.

Different device types offer varying levels of customization. Smartphones running Android or iOS have the most straightforward background-changing processes, typically completed in under one minute. Desktop computers and laptops running Windows, macOS, or Linux also offer background customization, though the steps differ slightly from mobile devices. Tablets, including iPads and Android tablets, generally follow similar procedures to their smartphone counterparts.

Understanding your specific device type matters because the location of settings differs across platforms. An iPhone user will navigate through different menus than an Android user. Similarly, a Windows 10 computer owner will access background settings differently than someone using macOS Ventura. Knowing which operating system powers your device is the first step toward successfully changing your background.

The background you select can be a solid color, a photograph from your device's storage, a pre-installed image provided by your manufacturer, or an image downloaded from the internet. Many people choose backgrounds that reflect their interests, aesthetic preferences, or organizational needs. Some users prefer minimalist solid colors to reduce distractions, while others select detailed landscapes or personal photographs.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing your background, identify your device type and operating system. Check your device settings or about section if you're unsure whether you're using iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS.

Step-by-Step Instructions for iPhone and iPad Users

iPhone and iPad users can change their backgrounds through the Settings app or by using the Photos app. The most common method involves accessing Settings, then navigating to Wallpaper. Open your device, locate the Settings app (usually a gray gear icon), and tap it. Scroll down until you find "Wallpaper" or "Display & Brightness," depending on your iOS version. The exact location may vary between iOS 15, iOS 16, iOS 17, and newer versions, but the general process remains consistent.

Once you've located the Wallpaper section, you'll see an option to "Choose a New Wallpaper" or "Add New Wallpaper." Apple provides built-in wallpaper collections organized by category, including Nature, Colors, Astronomy, and Abstract. Tap on any collection to preview available options. When you find an image you like, tap it to see a larger preview. Apple allows you to set the background for your lock screen, home screen, or both simultaneously.

If you prefer using a personal photograph, select the Photos option when choosing a wallpaper. This opens your photo library, allowing you to browse images stored on your device. After selecting a photo, you can pinch and zoom to adjust how the image appears on your screen. Some images may need cropping to fit your screen dimensions properly. Once you're satisfied with the preview, tap "Set" and choose whether to apply it to the lock screen, home screen, or both.

For users with iOS 16 and newer, Apple introduced the ability to customize lock screen wallpapers with additional features like widgets and font choices. This creates more opportunities for personalization. You can have different lock screen backgrounds for different times of day through Focus modes. For example, your device might automatically switch to a different background when you enter Work mode versus Personal mode.

Practical Takeaway: Access Settings > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper. Select from Apple's built-in collections or tap Photos to use personal images. Preview your selection before tapping Set to confirm your choice.

Changing Backgrounds on Android Smartphones and Tablets

Android devices offer multiple methods for changing backgrounds, though the exact steps vary depending on your manufacturer and Android version. The most straightforward approach uses the native Settings app. Open Settings, look for Display or Home Screen options, and find Wallpaper or Background. Alternatively, many Android users right-click or long-press on an empty area of their home screen and select "Wallpaper" from the context menu that appears.

Once you've accessed the wallpaper settings, Android typically presents three primary sources: built-in wallpapers provided by your device manufacturer, wallpapers from Google, or personal photos from your device storage. Samsung phones, for instance, come with Samsung's proprietary wallpaper collection. Google Pixel phones feature Google's curated collections, which update seasonally. Selecting any of these categories displays available images organized by theme.

After choosing an image, most Android devices allow you to preview it and adjust its position through pinch-zoom gestures. You can then choose whether to apply the wallpaper to your home screen, lock screen, or both. The terminology differs slightly between devices. Samsung uses "Home Screen" and "Lock Screen," while stock Android uses similar terminology. Some manufacturers, like OnePlus and Motorola, provide their own wallpaper apps with additional customization features.

For those wanting to use personal photos, navigating to the Photos or Gallery app on your home screen and selecting an image often provides a quick option to "Set as Wallpaper." This context menu appears when you long-press an image. Different Android versions (11, 12, 13, 14) may present slightly different interfaces, but the core functionality remains consistent. Recent Android versions have also introduced the ability to set different lock screen backgrounds for different notification styles.

Practical Takeaway: Long-press an empty area of your home screen and select Wallpaper, or go to Settings > Display > Wallpaper. Choose from built-in collections or Photos, preview your selection, and choose whether to apply it to your home screen, lock screen, or both.

Customizing Backgrounds on Windows Computers

Windows users can change their desktop background through Settings, a straightforward process that takes approximately one minute. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, right-click on any empty area of your desktop and select "Personalize" from the menu. Alternatively, open Settings (press the Windows key and type "Settings"), then click on "Personalization." In the left sidebar, you'll see "Background" as one of the options.

Windows provides several background options. You can select from a collection of built-in images categorized by theme (Nature, Abstract, Landscapes, and more). You can also select a solid color background if you prefer simplicity and want to reduce visual clutter. Additionally, Windows allows you to set a custom image from your computer's storage by clicking "Browse" and navigating to your desired file. Most common image formats work, including JPG, PNG, BMP, and GIF files.

After selecting your background, Windows displays a preview showing how it will appear on your desktop. If you've chosen a custom image, Windows offers positioning options: Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, or Center. The Fill option scales your image to cover the entire screen while maintaining its proportions. Fit scales the image to fit entirely within your screen. Stretch scales the image to fill your entire screen but may distort the image. Tile repeats the image across your screen, and Center places the image in the middle without scaling.

Windows 11 introduced additional personalization features, including the ability to set different backgrounds for different virtual desktops if you use that feature. You can also set your background to change automatically at specified intervals, creating a slideshow effect. To enable this, select "Slideshow" as your background type, choose a folder containing multiple images, and set the interval at which Windows should change the image (15 seconds to 1 hour).

Practical Takeaway: Right-click your desktop and select Personalize, then click Background. Choose from built-in images, solid colors, or browse for a custom image. Select your preferred positioning option and confirm your selection.

Setting Backgrounds on macOS and Linux Systems

macOS users access desktop background settings through System Preferences or System Settings, depending on their macOS version (Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, or newer). Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select "System Preferences" or "System Settings." Look for "Desktop & Screen Saver" or "Wallpaper." In newer versions, you may
