Learn How to Change Your Apple Store Password

Understanding Your Apple ID and Password Basics

Your Apple ID is the core of your Apple experience. It's a single account that connects you to all Apple services, including the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and iCloud Mail. When you create an Apple ID, you establish a password that protects your account from unauthorized access. This password is different from your device passcode or biometric authentication like Face ID or Touch ID—it's specifically for logging into your Apple account online or through the settings on your devices.

Your Apple ID password is important because it controls access to sensitive information. This includes your payment methods, personal data stored in iCloud, your app library, photos, documents, and family sharing settings. If someone gains access to your Apple ID password, they could potentially make purchases, access your private information, change your account settings, or lock you out of your own devices through Find My iPhone.

Apple requires passwords to meet certain security standards. Your password must be at least eight characters long and include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. You cannot use spaces, and your password cannot be the same as your Apple ID email address. Additionally, Apple won't let you reuse your last three passwords when you change your password, which encourages you to create truly new credentials each time.

Understanding why you might need to change your password is the first step. Common reasons include: you suspect someone has accessed your account, you've used the same password on multiple websites and one was compromised, you haven't changed it in several years, you shared it with someone who no longer needs access, or you received a security notification from Apple. Regular password changes are a standard security practice.

Practical takeaway: Before you change your password, gather your trusted devices and phone numbers. You'll need these during the password change process, as Apple uses them to verify your identity for security purposes.

Changing Your Password Through Apple's Official Website

The most straightforward way to change your Apple ID password is through Apple's official account management website. This method works from any computer or mobile device with a web browser, whether you use an Apple product or not. To begin, navigate to appleid.apple.com in your web browser and look for the sign-in section. Enter your Apple ID email address and your current password to log into your account.

Once you're logged in, you'll see your account dashboard. Look for the "Security" section on the left side of the page. Within Security, you'll find an option labeled "Password." Click on this option, and Apple will ask you to enter your current password once more as a verification step. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized password changes if someone gains temporary access to your computer.

After you confirm your current password, you'll see fields for your new password. Apple displays specific requirements on this page: your new password must be at least eight characters long, contain uppercase and lowercase letters, include at least one number, and not contain spaces or your Apple ID. The website will show a real-time strength indicator as you type your new password, helping you understand how strong your choice is.

When creating your new password, consider these practical suggestions: avoid common words or patterns, don't use personal information like birthdays or pet names, use a mix of characters to increase complexity, and consider using a passphrase combining multiple words if you find that easier to remember than random characters. Some people use password managers to generate and store strong, unique passwords securely. After entering your new password twice to confirm you've typed it correctly, click "Change Password" to complete the process.

Practical takeaway: After changing your password through the website, wait a few minutes before signing out of other devices. This gives Apple's systems time to sync the change across all servers. You'll then need to sign back in on your devices using your new password.

Updating Your Password on iPhone and iPad

If you prefer changing your password directly on your iPhone or iPad, you can do this through your device settings. This method is convenient if you're away from a computer, and it uses the same security verification processes that Apple's website uses. Start by opening the Settings app on your device and tap on your name at the top of the screen. This takes you to your Apple ID profile page within Settings.

Look for the "Password and Security" option in the menu. If you have two-factor authentication enabled on your account—which Apple recommends for all users—you'll need to verify your identity before proceeding. Apple may send a verification code to one of your trusted devices or phone numbers. Enter this code when prompted. This verification step prevents someone from changing your password if they've temporarily gained access to your device.

After verification, you'll see a field for entering your new password. Follow the same password requirements as described in the previous section: at least eight characters, including uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. Your device will check the password strength in real-time as you type. Type your new password in the field, then confirm it by typing it again in the second field to ensure accuracy.

On iPad, the process is nearly identical to iPhone. Tap Settings, then your name, then Password and Security. You'll follow the same verification and password entry steps. One advantage of changing your password on your iOS device is that the device automatically stores and uses your new password immediately. You won't need to manually re-enter it for most Apple services on that device, though you may need to enter it on other devices you own.

Practical takeaway: After changing your password on your iPhone or iPad, check your other Apple devices and sign out, then sign back in with your new password. This ensures all your devices are synced to your updated credentials and prevents any authentication issues with iCloud services.

Changing Your Password on Mac

Mac users can change their Apple ID password through System Settings, which is the Mac equivalent of iOS Settings. This method works on any Mac running macOS Big Sur or newer. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select "System Settings." Scroll down the sidebar and click on "General," then look for "About." However, the more direct route is to click on your Apple ID name at the top of the System Settings window if it appears there.

Once in your Apple ID settings, look for "Password and Security" in the left sidebar. You may need to scroll down to find this option. Click on it, and your Mac will prompt you to verify your identity if you have two-factor authentication enabled. Like on iPhone and iPad, Apple sends a verification code to a trusted device or phone number. Enter this code to proceed with the password change.

The password entry fields on Mac work the same way as on iOS. Type your new password according to Apple's requirements, then type it again to confirm. The strength indicator on Mac's System Settings is typically less detailed than on the website, but it will indicate whether your password meets Apple's minimum standards. Your Mac will also inform you if your new password matches one you've used recently, as Apple prevents password reuse for security reasons.

After you successfully change your password on your Mac, the change takes effect immediately for your Apple ID account. However, you may remain signed in on your Mac with the old authentication token. If you want to sign out completely and test your new password, you can do this by opening System Settings again, clicking on your Apple ID, and scrolling to the bottom where you'll find a "Sign Out" option. When you sign back in, you'll use your new password. This step isn't required but is a good way to confirm the password change worked correctly.

Practical takeaway: Mac users should know that changing your Apple ID password in System Settings doesn't automatically change your Mac login password (if you use the same Apple ID for Mac login). If you want to update your Mac login password to match your new Apple ID password, you'll need to do that separately through Users & Groups in System Settings.

What to Do If You Forget Your Current Password

If you've forgotten your current Apple ID password and need to change it, Apple has a recovery process designed for exactly this situation. You cannot change your password without either remembering your current password or going through an account recovery process. Start by going to iforgot.apple.com, which is Apple's dedicated account recovery page. This page works on any device with a web browser and is specifically designed to help people regain access to locked accounts.
