Learn How to Change Oil in Your Nissan Altima

Understanding Your Nissan Altima's Oil System

Your Nissan Altima's engine relies on oil to function properly. Oil serves several critical functions: it lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, cools the engine, and helps remove dirt and debris. Without adequate oil, your engine would overheat and suffer severe damage within minutes of starting. The oil circulates through your engine via the oil pump, which pushes it through passages and filters to keep everything running smoothly.

Nissan Altimas produced from 2007 onward typically use either 0W-20 or 5W-30 oil, depending on the model year and engine type. You can find the correct oil specification in your owner's manual or on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb. The oil capacity varies by year but generally ranges from 3.5 to 4.8 quarts. Checking your manual ensures you purchase the right type and quantity before starting the job.

Over time, oil breaks down due to heat exposure and collecting contaminants. Most modern Nissan Altimas require oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, though some newer models with synthetic oil can go up to 10,000 miles. Your owner's manual contains the specific interval for your vehicle. Regular oil changes extend engine life, improve fuel economy, and maintain warranty coverage. Neglecting oil changes can lead to engine sludge buildup, reduced performance, and costly repairs.

Understanding how your oil system works helps you recognize when maintenance is needed. When your dashboard oil pressure warning light appears or when you're approaching your maintenance interval, an oil change becomes necessary. Many Altima owners choose to perform this maintenance themselves to save money and maintain control over their vehicle's care.

Takeaway: Familiarize yourself with your Altima's oil type, capacity, and recommended change interval from your owner's manual before attempting to change the oil.

Gathering the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before beginning an oil change, you'll need to gather specific tools and materials. Having everything ready prevents interruptions and ensures the job goes smoothly. Most of these items are inexpensive and commonly available at auto parts stores, general retailers, or online.

Essential tools include an oil filter wrench or socket set to remove the old filter, an oil drain pan to catch used oil, a jack and jack stands to safely lift your vehicle, and wrenches or a socket set to remove the drain plug. A funnel designed for oil makes pouring new oil into the engine easier and reduces spills. Some people also use an oil filter removal tool if they lack a wrench large enough to grip the filter.

You'll need new oil in the correct type and quantity for your Altima, a replacement oil filter that matches your model year, and a new drain plug gasket if your vehicle uses one instead of a reusable rubber seal. Synthetic oils like Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, or Nissan-brand synthetic oil cost more than conventional oil but last longer. Conventional oils from brands like Pennzoil or Quaker State are less expensive and work well for regular maintenance intervals.

Additional helpful items include rags or paper towels for cleanup, a creeper or low stool to work underneath the vehicle, safety glasses to protect your eyes, and work gloves to keep your hands clean. A socket wrench set typically costs $30-$50 and lasts for years of maintenance work. An oil drain pan costs $10-$20 and can be reused indefinitely. Most auto parts stores rent specialized tools like filter sockets inexpensively if you don't own them.

The total cost of materials—oil, filter, and gasket—typically ranges from $30 to $60 depending on whether you choose conventional or synthetic oil. Labor costs at a shop for the same service usually range from $50 to $100, making DIY oil changes a worthwhile investment.

Takeaway: Create a checklist of required tools and materials, then gather everything before lifting your vehicle to avoid delays and ensure safety.

Preparing Your Vehicle and Workspace

Proper preparation sets the foundation for a safe, efficient oil change. Start by parking your Nissan Altima on a level, flat surface away from traffic. Parking on an incline can cause the oil drain pan to overflow on one side. Allow the engine to cool for at least five minutes after driving, though some mechanics recommend waiting longer. Warm oil flows more easily but is too hot to touch safely. Ideally, perform the oil change when the engine is warm but not hot to touch.

Engage the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before using a jack to lift the vehicle. Never rely solely on a jack to support the vehicle—always use properly rated jack stands. For a Nissan Altima, locate the designated lift points underneath the vehicle frame. These reinforced areas near each wheel are marked in your owner's manual. Lifting at incorrect points can damage the vehicle's undercarriage.

Once safely lifted and supported on jack stands, remove the wheel well plastic liner if present. This access panel protects the engine components but must be removed to reach the oil drain plug and filter. Some Altima models use clips or screws to secure the liner. You may need a Phillips or flathead screwdriver to remove it. Lay this panel aside in a safe location where it won't be lost or damaged during the work.

Ensure adequate lighting by setting up a work light or using your vehicle's interior lights if working in a garage. Arrange your tools and materials within arm's reach of your work area. Locate the oil drain plug underneath the engine. It typically appears as a bolt protruding from the oil pan's lowest point. The oil filter sits nearby, usually mounted vertically on the engine block. Identifying these components before starting prevents confusion once you begin working.

Takeaway: Always work on level ground, engage the parking brake, use proper jack stands, and ensure you can safely access the drain plug and filter before beginning.

Draining Old Oil and Replacing the Filter

With your vehicle safely lifted and supported, position the oil drain pan underneath the drain plug. The plug typically requires a wrench or socket in the range of 17-19mm, depending on your Altima's year. Turn the plug counterclockwise by hand if possible, then carefully remove it the rest of the way. Old oil will begin flowing immediately, sometimes forcefully, so ensure the pan is positioned directly below. Older Altimas tend to have hotter oil that drains faster than anticipated.

Allow the oil to drain completely, which usually takes 3 to 5 minutes. While waiting, inspect the old drain plug and gasket. If the gasket is rubber and appears cracked, damaged, or flattened, it should be replaced with a new one. If the plug has a metal crush washer gasket, you must replace it every time you change oil. Install the new gasket or crush washer on the drain plug, then reinstall it by hand to thread it correctly. Use your wrench to tighten it firmly but not excessively—over-tightening can crack the drain pan and cause oil leaks.

Next, locate the oil filter. Most Nissan Altimas have a traditional spin-on filter mounted vertically on the engine block. Position the drain pan beneath it to catch residual oil, then use an oil filter wrench or socket to turn it counterclockwise and remove it. The filter contains oil that will spill as you remove it, so work carefully. Once the old filter is removed, wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a rag to remove any debris or old gasket material.

Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of new oil around the rubber gasket on top of the replacement filter. This helps create a proper seal and prevents the filter from sticking during the next change. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten an additional three-quarter turn. The filter should be snug but not over-tightened, which can crack the housing or damage the gasket and cause leaks.

Takeaway: Drain oil completely, replace the drain plug gasket if needed, and apply oil to the new filter's gasket before installation to prevent future leaks and sealing issues.
