Learn How to Change Device and Clock Time

Understanding Device Time and Clock Settings

Every device—whether it's a smartphone, computer, tablet, or smart home device—has an internal clock that keeps track of the current date and time. This clock serves several important functions. It timestamps files when you save them, schedules reminders and alarms, manages appointment calendars, and synchronizes data between different devices. Without accurate time settings, you might miss important notifications, have trouble with scheduled tasks, or experience problems with email and file management.

Device clocks work by using either a quartz oscillator (found in most consumer electronics) or network time servers (for internet-connected devices). Quartz clocks keep time by measuring vibrations in quartz crystals, but they can drift slightly over days or weeks. Network time synchronization pulls the correct time from servers maintained by organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which ensures your device stays accurate.

There are two main time formats you'll encounter. The 12-hour format displays time with AM or PM designations (such as 3:45 PM), while the 24-hour format shows time without AM/PM using numbers 00:00 through 23:59 (such as 15:45). Different regions prefer different formats, and you can usually choose which one your device displays.

Time zones divide the world into regions that observe the same clock time. There are 24 main time zones, each representing one hour of difference. The Continental United States spans four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. If you travel between time zones or work with people in different regions, your device needs to know which time zone you're in to display the correct local time.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that your device has a clock separate from the actual time, and that this clock can drift without updates, helps explain why changing time settings matters for accuracy in scheduling and file management.

How to Change Time on Windows Computers

Changing the time on a Windows computer is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. The process differs slightly depending on whether you have Windows 10 or Windows 11, but both follow similar principles. Most people access these settings through the system clock in the taskbar—that's the time display at the bottom right corner of your screen.

For Windows 11, click the clock in the taskbar at the bottom right. A calendar widget will appear showing the current date and time. Look for the text that says "Time zone settings" and click it. This opens the Settings app with the Date & Time section already displayed. You'll see several toggle options. The "Set time automatically" toggle, when turned on, allows Windows to synchronize with internet time servers. Below that is "Set time zone automatically," which uses your location to select the correct time zone. If you prefer to set the time manually, turn off "Set time automatically" and click "Change" to enter your preferred date and time in the fields that appear.

For Windows 10, the process is nearly identical. Click the taskbar clock and select "Date and time settings." You'll see the same toggles for automatic time and time zone settings. Windows 10 also includes an option to "Sync now," which you can click to immediately synchronize with time servers if automatic synchronization is enabled.

If you want to change only your time zone without changing the actual time, both Windows versions allow this. After opening Date & Time settings, find the "Time zone" dropdown menu. Click it and select your region from the list. Windows will automatically adjust the displayed time to match the new time zone.

One important note: changing system time on Windows can affect scheduled tasks, file timestamps, and some software licenses. Most people should keep "Set time automatically" turned on, which syncs with Microsoft's time servers every week. Only change the time manually if your computer's clock has drifted significantly or you've physically moved to a different time zone.

Practical Takeaway: Use the automatic time synchronization feature in Windows settings for the most accurate timekeeping, and manually adjust only when necessary for time zone changes or after long periods without internet connection.

Adjusting Time on Mac and Apple Devices

Apple devices handle time settings through their System Settings (on newer Macs) or System Preferences (on older models). The philosophy behind Apple's approach emphasizes making automatic synchronization the default option, with manual adjustments available when needed.

On a Mac running macOS Ventura or later, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select "System Settings." Then click "General" in the sidebar and find "Date & Time." You'll see checkboxes for "Set date and time automatically" and "Set time zone automatically." Keeping both checked ensures your Mac stays synchronized with Apple's time servers and automatically detects your time zone based on your location or network. If you need to set the time manually, uncheck "Set date and time automatically" and the fields become editable. Click the date or time fields to change them.

For older Mac models using macOS Big Sur or earlier, the path is similar but labeled System Preferences instead of System Settings. The location is the same: Apple menu > System Preferences > Date & Time. The controls work identically to newer versions.

On iPhones and iPads, open the Settings app and scroll to "General." Tap "Date & Time" to view your settings. You'll see a toggle for "Set Automatically." When this is on, your device receives time and time zone information from your cellular network or Wi-Fi connection. If you turn this off, manual time and time zone fields appear below.

Apple Watch users should note that their watch automatically synchronizes with their paired iPhone. There's no separate time setting on the watch itself—changing the time on your iPhone automatically updates the watch. This synchronized approach reduces the chance of mismatched times between devices.

One useful feature in Apple's ecosystem is that if you travel internationally, your iPhone, iPad, and Mac can all update their time zones automatically when they detect a new location through Wi-Fi networks or cellular data. This means you don't need to manually change the time zone on each device.

Practical Takeaway: Keep automatic date and time enabled on all Apple devices to ensure accurate synchronization, and rely on the automatic time zone detection when traveling rather than manually adjusting multiple devices.

Changing Time Settings on Android and Mobile Devices

Android phones offer flexible time and date settings that can be automatically synchronized or manually configured. The exact menu path varies slightly between manufacturers like Samsung, Google Pixel, and others, but the core settings remain consistent across all Android devices.

To access time settings on most Android phones, open the Settings app and look for "System" or "Advanced" options (the exact label depends on your manufacturer). From there, find "Date and time." You should see toggles for "Automatic date and time" and "Automatic time zone." When both are enabled, your phone receives accurate time from your mobile network provider or through internet synchronization. This is the recommended configuration for most users because it requires no maintenance and ensures accuracy.

If you need to set the time manually, toggle off "Automatic date and time." This reveals editable fields where you can tap the date and time to change them. A calendar picker and clock interface appear, allowing you to select your preferred date and time. The time format—whether 12-hour or 24-hour—can usually be changed in these same settings, often under "Time format" or "Use 24-hour format."

For time zone changes, you can keep "Automatic time zone" enabled if you want Android to detect your location, or toggle it off to manually select from a list of available time zones. The list is organized by region, making it easy to find your location even if you're unfamiliar with which time zone you're in.

Some Android devices, particularly those from Samsung, include additional features like "Automatic time zone via Wi-Fi" in their advanced network settings. This allows your phone to determine the correct time zone by analyzing Wi-Fi signals, which can be useful in areas with weak cellular signals.

Older Android versions (Android 10 and earlier) may have slightly different menu labels or locations. The principle remains the same: look for System Settings, then Date & Time. If you cannot find the setting in the expected location, use your device's search function within Settings to search for "date" or "time."

Practical Takeaway: Enable automatic date and time on Android devices for hassle-free accuracy, and only manually adjust when your phone is in
