Learn How To Change App Icons On Your Phone

Understanding App Icons and Customization Basics

App icons are the small images you see on your phone's home screen that represent different applications. These icons serve as visual shortcuts that launch your apps when tapped. Most phones come with default icons designed by the app developers or your phone's manufacturer. However, modern smartphones offer built-in features that allow you to personalize these icons to match your preferences, organizational style, or aesthetic preferences.

Customizing app icons is a feature available on both Android and iPhone devices, though the methods differ between platforms. According to a 2023 survey by Statista, approximately 47% of smartphone users have customized their home screens in some way, with icon changes being one of the most popular modifications. This trend reflects growing interest in personalizing the digital experience of phones.

The process of changing app icons does not require any special technical skills or knowledge. Your phone already contains the tools necessary to make these changes built into its operating system. Understanding these native tools is the first step toward customizing your device.

Before making changes, it's helpful to know that there are different levels of customization available. Some methods involve using widgets, others involve changing how apps appear within folders, and some involve using third-party customization apps. Each approach offers different levels of control and visual results.

Practical takeaway: Start by exploring what customization options your specific phone already offers through its built-in settings before considering third-party solutions. This gives you a foundation for understanding how icon personalization works on your device.

Customizing App Icons on iPhone Devices

iPhone users can change app icons using the Shortcuts app, which became the standard method beginning with iOS 13. This native app is already installed on your device and requires no additional purchases. The Shortcuts app allows you to create custom home screen icons that launch your apps while displaying whatever image you choose as the icon.

To change an iPhone app icon, you first open the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut. You select "Open App" as the action, then choose which app you want the shortcut to launch. Next, you customize the appearance by selecting "Add to Home Screen." This action lets you choose a custom image or take a photo to use as the icon. The image appears on your home screen instead of the default app icon.

Apple also introduced App Library in iOS 14, which automatically organizes your apps into categories. While this doesn't change individual app icons, it offers another way to organize and access apps without cluttering your home screen. Many users combine this feature with custom shortcuts to create a highly personalized layout.

Another method available to iPhone users involves using Focus modes paired with home screen pages. You can create different home screens with different icon arrangements for different times of day or activities. For example, some users maintain a "Work" home screen with productivity apps and a "Personal" home screen with entertainment apps.

A practical consideration: iPhone icon customization through Shortcuts does create a small delay when opening apps, as the shortcut must process before launching the actual application. This delay is typically less than one second but noticeable to some users. For frequently used apps, you may want to keep the original icons on your main home screen and use custom icons for less frequently accessed apps.

Practical takeaway: iPhone users should use the Shortcuts app as their primary tool for icon customization, understanding that this method creates custom home screen icons that launch apps rather than changing the app icons themselves.

Customizing App Icons on Android Devices

Android offers more built-in flexibility for icon customization compared to iPhone. Many Android devices allow direct icon changes through launcher settings. Launchers are the interface that displays your home screen and manages your apps. Samsung devices, for example, include icon customization options directly in the home screen settings, where you can select different icon packs for various apps.

One common method on Android involves using a third-party launcher app. Popular options include Nova Launcher, Action Launcher, and Apex Launcher. These apps replace your default launcher and provide extensive customization options, including the ability to change app icons, create custom icon packs, and adjust grid layouts. According to data from Sensor Tower, Nova Launcher has been installed over 50 million times and maintains consistent user ratings above 4.5 stars across app stores.

Many Android users also utilize icon pack apps available through the Google Play Store. Icon packs are collections of custom icons designed to match a specific aesthetic. You select an icon pack app and then choose it as your icon set within your launcher settings. Thousands of icon pack options exist, ranging from minimalist designs to highly detailed artistic styles. Some popular icon packs include Lineage, Cornie Icons, and Material Design icons.

Some Android devices, particularly those using stock Android or Google Pixel phones, provide icon customization through Wallpaper apps and Themes. These built-in options allow coordinated customization of both wallpapers and icon appearance simultaneously, creating a cohesive visual experience across your home screen.

The widget system on Android also plays a role in customization. Unlike iPhone shortcuts, Android widgets can display live information and take up multiple home screen spaces. You can arrange widgets and apps to create custom home screen layouts that feel more personalized than the default arrangement.

Practical takeaway: Android users have the most flexibility for icon customization, with options ranging from built-in launcher features to downloadable third-party apps. Research your specific device model to determine which built-in customization options are available before installing additional apps.

Step-by-Step Process for Common Customization Methods

For iPhone users using Shortcuts, the process begins by opening the Shortcuts app (a blue icon with a fast-forward symbol). Tap the plus sign to create a new shortcut. Search for and select "Open App," then choose the specific app you want to customize. Tap the three-dot menu icon and select "Add to Home Screen." You'll see an option to choose an image for your home screen icon. You can select from your photo library, take a new photo, or choose from preset images. Name the shortcut something identifiable, then tap "Add." The custom icon appears on your home screen.

For Android users with a compatible launcher, the process is typically: long-press on an empty area of your home screen, select "Home Screen Settings" or "Customization," look for icon options, and choose your preferred icon pack from those installed on your device. Some devices allow you to long-press individual app icons and select "Edit Icon" directly.

For Android users installing a new launcher, the process involves: downloading a launcher app from the Google Play Store, opening the app, and granting necessary permissions. You then set it as your default launcher through Settings. Most launchers then provide tutorials or settings menus where you can select icon packs and customize your layout.

When choosing images for custom icons, consider using square images rather than rectangular ones, as most phones display home screen icons in square or slightly rounded square formats. Images with transparent backgrounds work better than those with solid-color backgrounds. Many users find that photos, artwork, or consistent color blocks work well as custom icons.

A common consideration is icon size consistency. Default app icons are typically designed to appear uniform in size. Custom icons may appear at different sizes depending on your choices. To maintain a cohesive look, consider using images that are consistently sized before uploading them to your launcher or Shortcuts app.

Practical takeaway: Whether using iPhone Shortcuts or Android launchers, the process involves selecting an app, choosing a custom image, and confirming your choice. Start with one or two apps to practice the process before customizing your entire home screen.

Maintaining Organization and Visual Coherence

As you customize your app icons, maintaining organization becomes important. A common approach involves grouping related apps together. For example, many users place all social media apps in one area, productivity apps in another, and entertainment apps in a third section. Custom icons work best when organized this way because it creates visual zones that help you locate apps quickly.

Color coordination is another organizational strategy. Many users select custom icons that follow a consistent color palette. This might mean choosing icons with similar hues, using a monochromatic color scheme, or selecting icons from the same icon pack designer. When custom icons follow a consistent color scheme, your home screen appears more organized and intentional rather than chaotic.

Naming your custom shortcuts clearly helps with organization, particularly on iPhone. When you create a shortcut, give it the exact name of the app, not creative names. This prevents confusion when searching for apps using Spotlight search on iPhone or the search
