Learn How to Calculate Your Pool Gallons

Understanding Pool Volume: Why It Matters

Knowing your pool's volume in gallons is one of the most important pieces of information a pool owner can have. The volume determines how much chlorine, algaecide, and other chemicals you need to add to maintain safe water quality. It also tells you how long it will take to fill your pool, how much water you'll use, and helps you calculate the turnover rate—how many times per day all the water circulates through your filter system.

The average residential swimming pool contains between 10,000 and 20,000 gallons of water. A small above-ground pool might hold only 3,000 gallons, while a large in-ground pool could contain 50,000 gallons or more. Without knowing your exact volume, you might add too little chemical treatment, which leaves water unsafe, or too much, which wastes money and can damage equipment or irritate swimmers' skin and eyes.

Pool volume also matters for energy efficiency. Understanding your pool size helps you select an appropriately sized pump and filter. An oversized pump wastes electricity, while an undersized one won't circulate water effectively. Additionally, if you ever need to drain and refill your pool, knowing the volume tells you what to expect from your water bill and how long the process will take.

Municipal water departments often track pool water use separately because it counts toward conservation efforts and can affect your rates. Some areas have regulations about pool size or require permits based on volume. Whether you're a new pool owner or someone who inherited a pool, calculating gallons gives you the data you need to maintain it properly.

Practical Takeaway: Measure your pool dimensions and calculate the volume now. Write the number down and keep it with your pool maintenance records. You'll reference this number repeatedly when buying chemicals, scheduling maintenance, or troubleshooting water quality problems.

Measuring Your In-Ground Pool: Step-by-Step Dimensions

Measuring an in-ground pool requires taking three key measurements: length, width, and average depth. For rectangular pools, this process is straightforward. For pools with irregular shapes, you'll need to break the pool into sections and calculate each one separately.

Start with length and width. Use a standard measuring tape to measure from one end of the pool to the other. If your pool is rectangular, measure from the inside edge where the water actually sits, not the deck edge. For length, measure along the longest dimension. For width, measure the shortest dimension. Write both numbers down in feet and inches, then convert inches to decimals (6 inches = 0.5 feet, 3 inches = 0.25 feet).

Next, measure depth. This is trickier because pool depth often varies. Walk into the pool or use a long pole marked with measurements to find the depth at different points. Most residential pools have a shallow end and a deep end. You need the average depth, not the maximum depth. Measure depth at the shallow end, the middle, and the deep end. Add these three numbers together and divide by three. For example: if shallow is 3 feet, middle is 5 feet, and deep is 7 feet, your average depth is (3+5+7)/3 = 5 feet.

For L-shaped or kidney-shaped pools, divide the pool into two rectangles mentally. Calculate the volume of each rectangle separately, then add them together. Some freeform pools might divide into three or more sections. The more sections you create, the more accurate your calculation becomes.

Practical Takeaway: Don't estimate depth from the outside. Actually measure it. Most people underestimate or overestimate depth by 1-2 feet, which creates large errors in gallons. A 1-foot error in a 20-by-40-foot pool changes the volume by about 6,000 gallons.

Calculating Gallons for Rectangular and Square Pools

Once you have your measurements, the math is straightforward. For rectangular and square pools, use this formula: Length × Width × Average Depth × 7.5 = Total Gallons. The number 7.5 is the conversion factor that turns cubic feet into gallons (one cubic foot equals 7.5 gallons).

Let's walk through a real example. Suppose you have a rectangular pool that's 30 feet long, 15 feet wide, and has an average depth of 5.5 feet. Here's the calculation:

• 30 × 15 = 450 square feet (the surface area)
• 450 × 5.5 = 2,475 cubic feet (the volume)
• 2,475 × 7.5 = 18,562.5 gallons (the total volume)

In this case, your pool holds approximately 18,560 gallons. When you order chemicals or plan maintenance, you'd round to 18,500 or 19,000 gallons depending on whether you want a conservative or generous estimate.

Here's another example with a smaller pool: 20 feet long, 12 feet wide, average depth of 4 feet:

• 20 × 12 = 240 square feet
• 240 × 4 = 960 cubic feet
• 960 × 7.5 = 7,200 gallons

For a square pool that's 18 feet on each side with 5 feet average depth:

• 18 × 18 = 324 square feet
• 324 × 5 = 1,620 cubic feet
• 1,620 × 7.5 = 12,150 gallons

Practical Takeaway: Do the calculation twice to catch errors. You can also photograph your measurements and use a basic calculator app on your phone to multiply the numbers in sequence. Double-checking takes two minutes and prevents ordering the wrong amount of chemicals.

Calculating Gallons for Circular and Oval Pools

Circular and oval pools use different formulas because they don't have four straight sides. Many above-ground pools are circular, and some in-ground pools have rounded designs.

For circular pools, you need the radius (the distance from the center to the edge) or the diameter (the distance across the full width). If you have the diameter, divide it by 2 to get the radius. The formula is: Radius × Radius × 3.14 × Average Depth × 7.5 = Total Gallons. The 3.14 represents pi, the mathematical constant used for circles.

Example: A circular above-ground pool with a diameter of 18 feet and average depth of 4 feet. First, find the radius: 18 ÷ 2 = 9 feet. Now calculate:

• 9 × 9 = 81 square feet
• 81 × 3.14 = 254.34 square feet (the surface area)
• 254.34 × 4 = 1,017.36 cubic feet
• 1,017.36 × 7.5 = 7,630.2 gallons

For oval pools, the formula is: Length × Width × 3.14 ÷ 4 × Average Depth × 7.5 = Total Gallons. This accounts for the rounded ends.

Example: An oval pool that's 30 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 5 feet average depth:

• 30 × 18 = 540
• 540 × 3.14 = 1,695.6
• 1,695.6 ÷ 4 = 423.9 square feet (the surface area)
• 423.9 × 5 = 2,119.5 cubic feet
• 2,119.5 × 7.
