Learn How to Block People Online and on Your Phone

Understanding Why You Might Want to Block Someone

Blocking people online and on your phone has become a common way to manage your digital interactions. People block others for many different reasons, and understanding these reasons can help you decide whether blocking is right for your situation.

According to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center, about 40% of internet users have blocked or unfriended someone online. The most common reasons include harassment, unwanted contact, privacy concerns, and toxic behavior. Some people block contacts to reduce stress, while others do it to protect themselves from people who make them uncomfortable.

Blocking can be useful when someone is sending you unwanted messages repeatedly, sharing content you find offensive, or behaving in ways that violate your boundaries. It's also a practical tool if you're trying to distance yourself from someone after a disagreement or breakup. In some cases, blocking is a safety measure—for example, if someone is harassing you or making threats.

Other situations where people use blocking include:

• Preventing an ex-partner from contacting them after a relationship ends
• Stopping spam messages or robocalls from telemarketers
• Avoiding contact with people who have bullied them in the past
• Managing professional boundaries with coworkers or clients
• Protecting children from contact with unknown or unsafe people
• Reducing notifications from social media accounts that produce content they don't enjoy

The key takeaway is that blocking is a personal choice based on your comfort level and safety. It's a legitimate tool for managing your relationships and protecting your peace of mind in digital spaces.

How to Block Someone on Major Social Media Platforms

Most social media platforms make blocking relatively straightforward, though the exact steps vary by platform. Here's how blocking works on the most widely used social networks.

Facebook: To block someone on Facebook, go to their profile page. Click the three dots (•••) in the top right corner of their profile. Select "Block" from the menu. Once blocked, that person cannot see your profile, send you messages, or find you in searches. You can also block someone during or after viewing their message by clicking the block option in your Messages folder. Facebook reports that blocking is one of the most frequently used privacy controls on their platform.

Instagram: Find the person's profile and tap the three dots in the upper right corner (on mobile) or near their username (on desktop). Select "Block" from the options. After blocking, the person cannot see your posts, stories, or profile unless they create a new account. They won't receive a notification that you've blocked them, but they may notice they can no longer find your profile.

Twitter (X): Go to the person's profile and click the three dots menu. Select "Block @username" from the dropdown. A blocked person cannot follow you, see your tweets, or send you direct messages. They will be notified that you've blocked them.

TikTok: Open the person's profile and tap the three dots in the upper right. Select "Block" from the menu. Blocked users cannot view your videos, send you messages, or duet or stitch your content. Like Instagram, they won't receive a notification.

YouTube: Click on the user's profile and select the flag icon. Choose "Block user" from the options. This prevents them from commenting on your videos or contacting you through the platform.

Practical takeaway: Most platforms don't notify the blocked person, but they may discover the block if they search for your profile. Remember that blocking on social media doesn't prevent someone from viewing your profile if they log out or use a different account.

Blocking Contacts and Calls on Your Phone

Blocking someone from calling or texting you directly on your phone is one of the most effective ways to stop unwanted contact. The process differs between iPhone and Android devices, but both offer built-in blocking features.

Blocking on iPhone: If you receive a call or text from someone you want to block, open the Messages or Phone app. Find the contact or number and swipe left on it (on older iPhones, tap "Edit" first). Tap "Block" and confirm. You can also go to Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts and tap "Add New" to manually enter a number. Blocked callers will hear a message indicating the call didn't go through, and text messages from blocked contacts go to a separate folder you can view if needed.

Blocking on Android: Open the Phone or Messages app. Long-press on the contact or number you want to block. Select "Block number" or "Block contact" from the menu. Some Android devices require you to go to Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Spam to add numbers manually. Blocked callers typically hear a message that the number is disconnected or invalid.

What happens when you block a number: The blocked person cannot reach you through calls or text messages. Voicemails may go to a special folder or be deleted automatically, depending on your phone settings and carrier. Most phones allow you to unblock numbers later if you change your mind. Your phone will not send any notification to the blocked person.

Additional blocking options include:

• Using your phone carrier's spam-blocking service (most carriers offer this)
• Installing third-party apps like TrueCaller or RoboKiller that block spam calls
• Enabling "Do Not Disturb" mode and customizing which contacts can reach you
• Creating a separate contact group and blocking all numbers not in your approved list
• Blocking unknown or private numbers through your phone's call settings

Practical takeaway: Phone blocking is permanent until you unblock the number, so make sure you're certain before blocking. Check your phone's blocked list periodically to see all blocked numbers and remove any if needed.

Managing Email and Blocking Unwanted Messages

Email blocking works differently than phone or social media blocking because email addresses are easier to spoof and create new accounts. However, you still have several options to reduce unwanted email contact.

Gmail blocking: Open an email from the sender you want to block. Click the three dots menu next to the "Reply" button. Select "Block [sender]" from the options. You can also highlight the email and click the block icon in the toolbar. Blocked senders' emails will automatically go to your Spam folder.

Outlook/Hotmail blocking: Open the email from the person you want to block. Click the three dots menu and select "Block" or "Junk." Outlook also allows you to create rules through Settings > Mail > Junk Email to automatically send emails from specific addresses to spam.

Yahoo Mail blocking: Click the three dots next to an email and select "Block Sender." This moves their emails to spam and prevents future messages from reaching your inbox.

Important distinction: Email blocking is not the same as preventing someone from sending you email. A blocked sender can still send emails—they just go directly to your spam folder instead of your inbox. This means you won't see them unless you check spam, but the person may not realize they've been blocked.

Beyond blocking individual senders, you can also:

• Use email filters to automatically delete or sort emails based on keywords or sender addresses
• Enable spam filters to catch unsolicited commercial email
• Unsubscribe from mailing lists using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of legitimate marketing emails
• Use email aliases or disposable email addresses when signing up for services you don't fully trust
• Report phishing or threatening emails to your email provider
• Set up forwarding rules to send emails from specific people to a separate folder

According to Statista, the average person receives about 347 billion emails per day globally, with a significant portion being spam. Email blocking and filtering are essential tools for managing this volume. Practical takeaway: Blocking email is useful for persistent senders, but creating filters and rules is often
