Learn How the IHG Hotels Credit Card Works

Overview of the IHG Hotels Credit Card

The IHG Hotels Credit Card is a co-branded credit card issued by Chase in partnership with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). IHG operates a collection of hotel brands including Holiday Inn, InterContinental, Kimpton, Six Senses, Crowne Plaza, and Voco. The card is designed for people who travel frequently to hotels or stay at IHG properties regularly. Understanding how this card works can help you learn whether its features align with your travel patterns and spending habits.

The card comes in several versions: the standard IHG Hotels Credit Card, the IHG Hotels Credit Card with the Premier tier, and higher-tier options. Each version offers different benefits, annual fees, and rewards structures. The standard version typically has no annual fee for the first year, then charges an annual fee in subsequent years. The Premier and higher tiers charge annual fees but offer additional perks that may be valuable depending on your hotel stays.

The core function of the IHG Hotels Credit Card revolves around earning rewards points, called IHG One Rewards points, on both hotel stays and everyday purchases. These points can be redeemed for free hotel nights, room upgrades, elite status within the IHG loyalty program, and other travel-related benefits. The card is connected to the IHG One Rewards loyalty program, so cardholders become members automatically.

Practical takeaway: Review the different card tiers and their annual fees before considering whether the card matches your travel frequency. A person who stays at hotels only once or twice yearly may find the annual fee not worth the benefits, while someone who stays frequently may find substantial value in the rewards structure.

How Points Are Earned and Accrued

The IHG Hotels Credit Card earns points in two primary ways: through hotel stays and through everyday purchases. When you use the card to pay for a room at an IHG property, you earn a specific number of points per dollar spent. The earning rate varies depending on which version of the card you hold. For example, certain card tiers may offer 10 points per dollar spent on IHG hotels, while the standard tier might offer a different rate. Points are credited to your account after the stay is completed and processed.

For everyday purchases made outside of hotels, the card typically earns a base rate of points per dollar spent. This base rate is lower than the hotel earning rate but still accumulates over time with regular use. Everyday categories might include groceries, gas stations, restaurants, and other merchants. Some card versions may offer bonus point categories or elevated earning rates on certain types of purchases, so it's important to review the specific terms of your card version.

When you stay at an IHG hotel and use your credit card to pay, the points appear in your IHG One Rewards account. Your IHG account number is linked to your credit card account, so points track automatically. You do not need to manually enter or register each stay. If you have elite status in the IHG loyalty program, you may earn additional points on top of the credit card earning rate. This means loyalty status and credit card rewards can stack together.

The earning structure also includes sign-up bonuses. When you first open the card, you typically receive a substantial point bonus after spending a certain amount within a specific timeframe. These bonuses can be worth millions of points depending on the card tier, and they represent a significant portion of the total rewards value for new cardholders. The specific bonus amount and spending requirement vary by card version and current offers.

Practical takeaway: Track your spending patterns for a month or two to estimate how many points you might earn annually. If you spend $5,000 yearly on hotels at IHG properties and another $10,000 on everyday purchases with the card, you can calculate approximate annual point earnings based on the earning rates and determine if those points translate to meaningful free nights or perks.

Understanding Points Redemption and Value

Points earned through the IHG Hotels Credit Card can be redeemed through the IHG One Rewards program. The most common redemption method is booking free hotel nights at IHG properties. Each hotel has a nightly point requirement that varies based on the property's category and location. Budget hotels in smaller cities may require 10,000 points per night, while luxury properties in major cities might require 50,000 points or more. The IHG website lists point redemption costs for each property, allowing you to comparison shop before booking.

The point value per night varies significantly depending on which property you choose and when you book. If you redeem 10,000 points for a $100-per-night hotel room, you're getting approximately 1 cent per point in value. If you use 50,000 points for a $250-per-night luxury suite, you're getting 0.5 cents per point. Conversely, if you find a premium property where rates exceed point redemption value, you might receive higher value. Strategic redemption involves finding properties where the nightly rate is high relative to the point cost, maximizing the value you receive.

Beyond free nights, points can be redeemed for other benefits within the IHG ecosystem. You may be able to redeem points for room upgrades, elite status within the loyalty program, or even points transfers in certain circumstances. Some cardholders use a combination of redemption methods depending on their needs. For example, you might redeem points for free nights during expensive travel periods and save cash for slower seasons.

The IHG One Rewards program also occasionally offers special promotions that boost point value. These promotions might include bonus points for redemptions during specific months or double points on stays at certain properties. Understanding these promotions and timing your redemptions accordingly can increase the overall value you receive from accumulated points. Checking the IHG One Rewards website regularly allows you to stay informed about current offers.

Practical takeaway: Before assuming points are valuable, research the average nightly rates at hotels where you typically stay and compare those rates to the point costs. A person who frequently stays at luxury properties may receive significantly more value from points than someone who prefers budget chains, since the dollar value of the free night may be higher.

Annual Fees, Welcome Bonuses, and Card Tiers

The IHG Hotels Credit Card structure includes different tiers, each with distinct annual fees and corresponding benefits. The standard version typically has no annual fee in the first year, then charges an annual fee (ranging from approximately $50 to $100 or more) in year two and beyond. Higher-tier versions charge annual fees upfront but include additional perks such as annual free night certificates, elite status upgrades, and expanded benefits.

The welcome bonus is a major component of the card's value proposition. New cardholders typically receive a significant point bonus after spending a required amount (often $2,000 to $5,000) within the first few months of opening the card. This welcome bonus can equal 50,000 to over 100,000 points depending on current offers and the card tier. For many cardholders, the welcome bonus alone may cover multiple free nights at mid-tier hotels or contribute substantially toward a luxury stay.

Some card versions include an annual free night certificate as part of the annual fee structure. This certificate provides one free night (up to a certain point value) each year, typically on your card anniversary. The value of this certificate depends on where you use it. If you redeem it at a property worth more points than the certificate allows, you'll pay the difference out of pocket. If you strategically use it at a property within its point value range, it can offset a portion of the annual fee.

Higher-tier cards may offer elite status benefits as part of the annual fee. Elite status within IHG One Rewards can provide perks such as room upgrades, late checkout, and bonus points on stays. For frequent travelers, these benefits may justify paying a higher annual fee. However, calculating this value requires honest assessment of how many nights you stay annually and whether you'll realistically use these perks.

Practical takeaway: Compare the annual fee against the annual free night certificate value and any elite status benefits you'd receive. If the card charges a $100 annual fee but provides a $75-$100 free night certificate annually, your effective annual cost may be minimal or even zero if you use the certificate. However, if you don't stay at IHG hotels frequently enough to use these benefits, the fee becomes pure cost with no offsetting value.
