Learn How the Amazon Credit Card Works

Understanding the Amazon Credit Card Basics

The Amazon credit card, officially known as the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card, is a rewards credit card issued by Chase Bank in partnership with Amazon. This card allows cardholders to earn cash back rewards on purchases, with higher rewards rates for Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. The card comes in two versions: one designed for Amazon Prime members and a standard version for non-Prime members.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card offers different reward structures depending on where you shop. Prime members earn 5% cash back on Amazon and Whole Foods Market purchases up to a maximum of $1,500 in combined purchases each year (then 1% after that limit), 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Non-Prime members earn 3% cash back on Amazon purchases and Whole Foods Market purchases, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Unlike some other rewards cards, the Amazon credit card does not have an annual fee. This means cardholders do not pay a yearly cost simply for holding the card. The card is a Visa, which means it can be used virtually anywhere Visa is accepted, not just at Amazon or Whole Foods.

The rewards program is structured as cash back, meaning customers receive statements showing their accumulated rewards that can be applied toward purchases. These rewards are typically issued as statement credits and can be used automatically or stored for later use. The card also includes various cardholder protections and purchase safeguards that are standard for Visa cards at this level.

Practical Takeaway: Before using the Amazon credit card, understand which version suits your situation—whether you are a Prime member affects your earning rates significantly, with Prime members earning substantially higher rewards percentages on Amazon purchases.

How Rewards Accrue and Work

The Amazon credit card rewards system operates on a straightforward earning structure where cash back accumulates with each purchase. When you use the card, the transaction is processed through Chase, and the corresponding reward percentage is applied to that purchase amount. These rewards are tracked in your account and typically appear on your billing statement within one to three business days of the transaction posting.

For Prime members, the 5% cash back on Amazon purchases applies to physical items, digital content, and services purchased through Amazon.com. However, this 5% rate applies only to the first $1,500 in combined Amazon and Whole Foods purchases per year. Once you reach $1,500 in eligible purchases during a calendar year, the cash back rate drops to 1% for the remainder of that year. The calendar year resets on January 1st, so if you reach the limit in November, your rewards percentage returns to 5% on January 1st of the following year.

Whole Foods Market purchases also count toward the $1,500 annual cap for Prime members. This means if you spend $800 at Amazon and $800 at Whole Foods in a single year, you would have met your $1,600 cap, and subsequent purchases at both merchants would earn only 1% cash back for the remainder of that year. Non-Prime members do not have this annual cap and consistently earn 3% cash back at Amazon and Whole Foods.

The cash back rewards can be used in several ways. When you make a purchase, you can choose to apply your accumulated rewards as a statement credit, which reduces your current bill. Some cardholders prefer to let rewards accumulate and use them all at once for a larger purchase or to cover an entire billing statement. The rewards never expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing.

Interest rates on purchases vary based on creditworthiness and current market conditions. Most cardholders receive an introductory 0% APR period on purchases and balance transfers (typically lasting 6-12 months), after which a variable interest rate applies. This means the rate can fluctuate over time based on the prime rate. For those who carry a balance month to month, understanding the APR is critical because interest charges can offset rewards earned.

Practical Takeaway: Track your combined Amazon and Whole Foods spending throughout the year if you are a Prime member to know when you are approaching the $1,500 cap, allowing you to plan your larger purchases strategically.

Fees, Interest Rates, and Costs

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card charges no annual fee, which distinguishes it from many premium rewards cards on the market. This means you can hold and use the card year-round without paying a flat yearly cost. Some competing rewards cards charge $95 to $550 annually, making the zero annual fee of the Amazon card attractive for budget-conscious cardholders.

However, the card does carry other potential costs that cardholders should understand. If you carry a balance from month to month, you will incur interest charges based on the card's APR. The introductory APR offer typically lasts 6 to 12 months and applies to both new purchases and balance transfers. After this introductory period ends, a variable APR applies, meaning the rate changes based on market conditions. Current rates for this card typically range from 17.99% to 25.99% APR depending on your credit profile, though these rates can change.

Late payment fees apply if you miss your payment due date. Chase typically charges $39 for the first late payment and up to $39 for subsequent late payments within six months. Additionally, if you pay more than 60 days late, the card issuer may report the delinquency to credit bureaus, which can negatively affect your credit score. Paying at least the minimum payment by the due date avoids these fees.

Cash advances, if you use your card at an ATM to withdraw cash, typically carry a higher interest rate than purchase APR and usually include an upfront fee of 3% to 5% of the amount withdrawn. This makes cash advances an expensive way to access funds and should generally be avoided.

Foreign transaction fees may apply if you use the card internationally. Most standard Visa cards, including the Amazon card, charge 1% to 3% for purchases made outside the United States. This fee is automatically added to your bill when you make international purchases.

Practical Takeaway: To maximize the value of this card, pay your full statement balance each month to avoid interest charges, which would quickly erase any rewards earned through cash back.

How to Use the Card for Maximum Value

To get the most value from the Amazon credit card, consider your spending patterns and align them with the card's rewards structure. Prime members who shop frequently at Amazon and Whole Foods should calculate whether the higher earning rates justify using this card over other general-purpose rewards cards. For example, if you spend $2,000 per year at Amazon, a 5% cash back rate (on the first $1,500) would earn you $75 in rewards, compared to $20 with a 1% flat-rate card.

Pairing the Amazon card with other purchases can optimize rewards across different spending categories. The 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores makes this card competitive for those everyday purchases. However, some other rewards cards offer 2% back on gas and drugstores with a 3% rate at restaurants, so comparing your specific spending is important. If you rarely visit drugstores but frequently eat at restaurants, another card might serve you better.

Timing larger Amazon purchases strategically matters for Prime members who are approaching the $1,500 annual cap. Planning major Amazon purchases early in the year ensures you maximize the 5% rewards rate before the cap is reached. Conversely, if you know you will exceed the cap before year-end, you might decide to use a different card for additional Amazon purchases once the $1,500 limit is met.

Combining the Amazon credit card with Amazon Prime membership creates additional value beyond rewards. Prime members receive free two-day shipping on most items, access to Prime Video, and other benefits. The credit card itself does not grant Prime membership, but Prime members receive enhanced rewards when using the card.

Keeping your account in good standing by making at least minimum payments on time can lead to potential credit line increases over time. Higher credit limits provide more flexibility for large purchases and can improve your credit utilization ratio, which affects your credit score. Chase occasionally offers targeted promotions to existing cardholders, such as bonus cash back on specific categories for limited periods, so monitoring your account communications can reveal these opportunities.
