Learn How SSDI and SSI Work Together

Understanding the Two Programs: SSDI and SSI Basics

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are two separate federal programs that provide monthly cash payments to people with disabilities, but they work in different ways. Many people confuse these programs because they both come from the Social Security Administration and both serve people with disabilities, but understanding how each one works is important for anyone considering either program.

SSDI is based on work history. To receive SSDI payments, a person must have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain period of time. The amount of money someone receives through SSDI depends on how much they earned during their working years. Think of SSDI as an insurance program—you pay into it through taxes while working, and if you become unable to work due to a disability, the program pays you benefits based on what you contributed.

SSI, on the other hand, is a needs-based program. This means the program looks at how much money and resources a person currently has, not their work history. SSI provides monthly payments to people with disabilities, blindness, or who are age 65 or older, but only if their income and resources fall below certain limits. In 2024, the basic SSI payment for an individual is $943 per month, though this amount changes yearly.

Both programs require that a person have a medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. The Social Security Administration uses the same medical standards to determine disability for both programs. However, the financial rules are very different. Someone might receive both SSDI and SSI at the same time if their SSDI payment is low enough, or they might receive only one program's benefits.

Practical Takeaway: Start by determining which program might apply to your situation. Ask yourself: Do I have a significant work history with recent earnings? If yes, SSDI may be relevant. Do I have limited income and resources right now? If yes, SSI may be relevant. Most people fit into one category more clearly than the other, though some may qualify for both.

How SSDI Works: Building Benefits Through Work History

SSDI is a Social Security insurance program that pays benefits to workers who become disabled before reaching full retirement age. The program also pays benefits to certain family members of disabled workers, and to workers who reach retirement age. To understand SSDI, it helps to know how Social Security credits work.

Every year a person works and pays Social Security taxes, they earn "credits" toward Social Security benefits. In 2024, a person earns one credit for each $1,730 of earnings, with a maximum of four credits per year. To receive SSDI benefits, a person generally needs to have earned at least 40 credits total, with at least 20 of those credits earned in the 10 years before becoming disabled. For younger workers, the requirements are lower. A 24-year-old might need only 12 credits total, with 6 earned in the 3 years before disability.

The amount of the SSDI payment is calculated based on a person's "primary insurance amount" (PIA). This amount is based on the worker's lifetime earnings record. Workers who earned higher incomes during their working years generally receive higher SSDI payments. The Social Security Administration uses a formula that takes a person's 35 highest-earning years and calculates an average. In 2024, the average SSDI payment is approximately $1,550 per month, but payments range widely depending on work history.

An important feature of SSDI is that family members may also receive benefits on a worker's record. A spouse age 62 or older may receive spousal benefits. Children under age 19 (or up to age 19 if in high school) may receive child benefits. An ex-spouse age 62 or older may receive benefits based on the worker's record. Each family member typically receives a percentage of the worker's benefit amount, and there is a family maximum—usually between 150% and 180% of the worker's benefit amount.

SSDI also includes a work incentive called the "Trial Work Period" that allows beneficiaries to test their ability to work without losing benefits. During a nine-month trial work period, a person can earn any amount of money and still receive full SSDI benefits. After the trial work period ends, benefits continue for an additional 36 months as long as earnings stay below the "substantial gainful activity" level, which is $1,550 per month in 2024.

Practical Takeaway: Review your Social Security earnings record to understand your work history. You can create a "my Social Security" account at ssa.gov to view your earnings history. This record determines how much SSDI you would receive and whether you have enough credits. Understanding your earning history before contacting Social Security helps you ask better questions and understand your options.

How SSI Works: Need-Based Support for Disabled Individuals

SSI is a federal income support program for people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older. Unlike SSDI, SSI does not require any work history. Instead, SSI looks at current financial need. The program is funded through federal taxes, not through Social Security payroll taxes.

To understand SSI, you need to know the program's resource and income limits. In 2024, an individual can have no more than $2,000 in countable resources to receive SSI, and a couple can have no more than $3,000. Resources include things like money in bank accounts, stocks, bonds, and property (with some exceptions). A person's home and one car are not counted as resources, no matter how much they are worth. Personal items like furniture, jewelry, and household goods are also not counted.

SSI also has income limits. The program counts "unearned income" (like money from other benefits, gifts, or pensions) and "earned income" (like wages from work) differently. In 2024, the federal SSI payment is $943 per month for an individual and $1,415 for a couple. However, these amounts are reduced dollar-for-dollar when a person has other unearned income. For earned income, the first $65 per month is not counted, and only half of income above that amount counts toward the SSI limit. This means someone can work part-time and still receive SSI benefits.

An important aspect of SSI is the "in-kind support and maintenance" rule. If someone receives food or shelter from another person without paying for it, this may reduce their SSI payment. For example, if a person's adult child buys them groceries or pays their rent, this might be counted as income for SSI purposes. However, there are rules about when this applies and how much it reduces the payment.

SSI also includes work incentives to encourage people to try working. The Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS) program allows a person to set aside income and resources for a work goal without losing SSI. For example, someone might save money to attend vocational training or buy equipment needed for a business. Additionally, the "Impairment Related Work Expenses" rule allows a person to deduct certain work-related costs from their earnings when calculating SSI payment amounts.

Practical Takeaway: Gather information about your current finances. Make a list of money in bank accounts, savings, and other resources. Calculate your monthly income from all sources (other benefits, part-time work, pensions, gifts). Compare these numbers to the current SSI resource and income limits. This gives you a realistic picture of whether SSI might be an option and how much your payment might be.

When SSDI and SSI Work Together: Concurrent Benefits

Some people receive both SSDI and SSI at the same time. This situation typically occurs when someone's SSDI payment is very low—lower than the current SSI federal benefit rate. This person is said to receive "concurrent" benefits. Understanding how these programs work together is important because the rules interact with each other in specific ways.

Here is a concrete example: Suppose Maria worked for only a few years before becoming disabled. Her SSDI payment is $500 per month because her earnings record is limited. In 2024, the SSI payment is $943 per month. Maria does not have other income or significant resources. In this case, she might receive $500 from SSDI and an additional $443 from SSI, for a total of $943 per month. The SSI
