Learn How Social Security Spousal Benefits Work

Understanding Social Security Spousal Benefits: The Basics

Social Security spousal benefits represent a feature of the Social Security program that permits married individuals to potentially receive payments based on their spouse's earnings record, rather than solely on their own work history. This program has been in place for decades and serves millions of people across the United States.

The fundamental concept behind spousal benefits relates to how Social Security calculates payment amounts. When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you build a personal earnings record. The Social Security Administration uses this record to determine your retirement benefit amount. However, if you are married, you may have the option to receive payments based on your spouse's earnings record instead—or in addition to—your own. This can be particularly valuable for individuals who have limited work histories, took time away from the workforce to raise children or care for family members, or worked in lower-paying positions.

As of 2024, there are approximately 68 million Social Security beneficiaries in the United States, with spousal benefits accounting for a meaningful portion of monthly payments distributed. The amount you might receive as a spouse typically cannot exceed 50 percent of what your spouse receives at their full retirement age, though this amount may be reduced if you claim before reaching your full retirement age.

It's important to note that spousal benefits are not automatic. You must take specific steps to request them through the Social Security Administration. The rules governing spousal benefits have changed over time, particularly following legislation enacted in 2015, which means the rules that applied to people born on different dates vary considerably.

Practical Takeaway: Spousal benefits may offer an additional source of retirement income based on your spouse's work history. Understanding how these benefits work requires learning about your full retirement age, the timing of claims, and how your own earnings record interacts with spousal benefit rules.

Who Can Receive Spousal Benefits and Basic Requirements

To receive spousal benefits, several conditions must be met. First, your spouse must have already claimed their own Social Security retirement benefits. You cannot receive spousal benefits if your spouse has not yet filed for their benefits, even if they have reached their full retirement age.

Age requirements vary depending on when you were born. For people born in 1954 or earlier, you may be able to claim spousal benefits as early as age 62. However, if you were born after 1954, the rules changed significantly. If you were born between 1955 and 1959, your full retirement age for spousal benefits (the age at which you can receive your full spousal benefit amount without reduction) gradually increased. For those born in 1960 or later, your full retirement age for spousal benefits is age 67.

You must be legally married to the person whose record you want to use. This means you are currently married to the individual. However, Social Security also recognizes divorced individuals in certain circumstances. If you have been divorced for at least two years and were married for at least 10 years, you may be able to receive spousal benefits on your ex-spouse's record without their knowledge or permission—and without their benefits being reduced. Your ex-spouse does not need to have claimed benefits yet if you are age 62 or older and the marriage lasted at least 10 years.

Citizenship is not required to receive spousal benefits, but there are residency requirements. Generally, you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident to receive benefits. Some non-citizens who are permanent residents or who meet other specific criteria may also qualify.

If you are receiving benefits on your own work record, you will not also receive a separate spousal benefit. Instead, Social Security will combine your benefit amounts and pay you the higher of the two amounts you are entitled to receive.

Practical Takeaway: To explore whether spousal benefits may be available to you, verify that your spouse has claimed benefits, confirm your age relative to your full retirement age, and determine whether your marriage meets the duration and legal requirements Social Security establishes.

How Benefit Amounts Are Calculated

The calculation of spousal benefit amounts involves several steps and depends heavily on when you claim relative to your full retirement age. Understanding this calculation helps explain why timing matters significantly in spousal benefit decisions.

The starting point is your spouse's Primary Insurance Amount, often called the PIA. This is the monthly benefit amount your spouse receives at their full retirement age. Your spousal benefit at your full retirement age typically cannot exceed 50 percent of your spouse's PIA. For example, if your spouse's full retirement benefit is $2,000 per month, your spousal benefit at your full retirement age would be approximately $1,000 per month (though the exact amount may vary slightly based on rounding rules).

However, most people do not claim spousal benefits at their full retirement age. If you claim before reaching your full retirement age, your benefit amount is reduced. The reduction percentage depends on how many months before your full retirement age you claim. These reductions are permanent, meaning your monthly benefit amount will not increase to the full 50 percent amount later. For someone born in 1960 or later, claiming at age 62 results in approximately a 32.5 percent reduction from the 50 percent spousal benefit amount. This means you would receive roughly 35 percent of your spouse's PIA instead of 50 percent.

Conversely, if you delay claiming spousal benefits past your full retirement age, your benefit does not increase further. This differs from your own retirement benefits, which increase by approximately 8 percent per year if you delay claiming past your full retirement age. For spousal benefits specifically, there is no incentive to delay past your full retirement age.

Your own earnings record also affects spousal benefits. If you are entitled to retirement benefits based on your own work history, Social Security will calculate both amounts and pay you the higher of the two. Some people receive a combination—their own retirement benefit plus an additional amount that brings them up to their full spousal entitlement, though the rules about these "deemed" elections changed in 2015.

Cost of living adjustments (COLAs) apply to spousal benefits. Each year, if inflation has occurred, Social Security increases benefit amounts for all beneficiaries, including those receiving spousal benefits. In 2024, this adjustment was 3.2 percent.

Practical Takeaway: Your spousal benefit amount at full retirement age is roughly half your spouse's benefit amount, but claiming earlier reduces this amount permanently. Comparing your own retirement benefit to your potential spousal benefit helps determine which benefit stream is larger and therefore which you might receive.

How Timing Affects Spousal Benefits and Long-term Outcomes

The decision of when to claim spousal benefits involves complex tradeoffs between receiving benefits sooner versus receiving larger amounts later. This timing decision can significantly impact your total lifetime benefits.

If you claim spousal benefits at age 62—the earliest age possible for those born before 1955—you receive a reduced amount each month. However, you receive benefits for more years overall. If you live to an average lifespan, this early claiming typically results in a lower total amount of benefits received over your lifetime compared to waiting until your full retirement age. However, if your health circumstances suggest a shorter life expectancy, claiming earlier might result in larger total lifetime benefits.

For every year you delay claiming spousal benefits beyond age 62 and up to your full retirement age, your monthly benefit amount increases. For example, someone born in 1960 or later who waits until age 67 instead of age 62 to claim spousal benefits receives approximately a 35 percent higher monthly payment. The crossover point—the age at which total lifetime benefits become equal between the two strategies—typically occurs around age 80.

It is important to understand that delaying spousal benefits past your full retirement age does not increase the amount further, unlike delaying your own retirement benefits. This is a critical distinction. If waiting to claim is part of your strategy, your reasoning should involve other factors, such as coordinating with your spouse's claiming decisions or managing other income sources.

Your spouse's claiming decision also affects your timing considerations. If your spouse claims at a younger age and receives a reduced benefit, your spousal benefit will be calculated based on that reduced amount. However, if your spouse delays claiming and receives an increased benefit amount, your potential spousal benefit is correspondingly higher. Some couples coordinate their claiming strategies to maximize household benefits over time.
