Learn How Push Notifications Work For Apps

What Are Push Notifications and How Do They Reach Your Phone?

Push notifications are short messages that appear on your phone, tablet, or computer without you having to open an app. They show up as alerts, badges, or banners on your device's screen. When you receive a push notification, you'll typically see text, sometimes an image, and occasionally a link to take action. These messages are called "push" notifications because the app sends, or "pushes," them directly to you rather than waiting for you to open the app and retrieve the message yourself.

The process of delivering a push notification involves several technology layers working together. When a company wants to send you a notification, they use a service called a push notification platform or provider. This platform acts as a middleman between the company's servers and your device. Major platforms include Apple Push Notification service (APNs) for iPhones and iPads, Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for Android devices, and other services for web browsers and other platforms.

The journey of a single notification starts when a company's system creates a message and sends it to the push notification platform. The platform then checks which devices should receive this message based on user preferences and settings. It routes the notification through Apple's, Google's, or another provider's servers, which then transmit it to your specific device. Your phone receives the notification and displays it according to how you've customized your notification settings.

Push notifications differ from text messages or emails because they use the internet rather than phone networks. This means they work whenever your device has an internet connection, whether through WiFi or mobile data. The notifications are designed to be less intrusive than phone calls but more immediate than checking an email inbox. They appear on your lock screen, notification center, or as banner messages, depending on your device's operating system and the app's settings.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding push notifications as a communication channel helps you make informed decisions about which apps you want to receive messages from. Push notifications rely on the internet connection on your device, not cellular networks, so they work equally well on WiFi or data plans. Knowing this information can help you understand why some notifications might be delayed during poor internet connections.

The Technical Steps Behind Delivering a Push Notification

Each push notification goes through a specific technical process to reach your device. This process begins the moment a company decides to send a notification to its users. First, the company creates the notification message within their system, often through an app, website, or automated trigger. For example, a rideshare app might create a notification when a driver accepts your ride request, or a weather app might send a notification when a storm enters your area.

Once created, the message is sent to the push notification service platform, which the app company has already set up and configured. The company provides information to this platform about which users should receive the message. This information might include factors like user location, past behavior, preferences, or whether they've opted into specific notification types. The push platform then filters the message to only send it to relevant users who have the app installed and have given permission for notifications.

Next, the push platform connects to Apple's, Google's, or another provider's notification infrastructure. These companies maintain massive networks of servers that handle billions of notifications daily. The platform sends your notification through these networks using specialized protocols designed for speed and reliability. These protocols ensure that even if one connection fails, the system will attempt alternative routes to reach your device. Statistics show that major push notification platforms have delivery rates exceeding 95% in most cases, though some notifications may fail if a device is offline or has disabled notifications entirely.

When your device receives the notification, it displays it according to several factors: your notification settings for that specific app, your device's overall notification preferences, whether your screen is locked, and what time the notification arrives. If you've set an app to "silent" notifications, it might add a badge number to the app icon without showing a visible alert. If you've allowed full notifications, you'll see a banner or alert appear on your screen. Your device stores these preferences locally, so the push platform can make some decisions about how to display the notification before it even reaches you.

Practical Takeaway: Push notifications undergo multiple filtering and routing steps before reaching your device. Understanding this process shows why not all notifications might arrive immediately or display the same way—your device's settings, internet connection, and notification preferences at the time of delivery all affect what you see and when you see it.

How Apps Request Permission and Store Your Device Information

Before an app can send you push notifications, it must first ask for your permission. When you first open an app that uses notifications, you'll typically see a prompt asking whether you want to receive alerts from that app. This permission system is a requirement built into iOS, Android, and other platforms specifically to protect user privacy and prevent apps from sending unwanted messages without consent. If you tap "Allow," the app can send you notifications. If you choose "Don't Allow," the app cannot send notifications to your device.

When you grant permission, the app doesn't collect your phone number or email address. Instead, your device generates a unique identification token called a "device token" or "push token." This token is a long string of characters that identifies your specific device to the push notification service. The app then registers this token with the push platform, essentially saying, "This is device XYZ, and it has permission to receive notifications for this app." The company stores this token in their database, which may contain millions of other tokens from other users' devices.

Device tokens are temporary and may change periodically, especially when you update your operating system, reinstall the app, or restore your device from a backup. Apps are designed to refresh these tokens regularly to ensure they have the most current information. If an app tries to send a notification using an outdated or invalid token, the notification will fail to deliver. This is one reason why you might stop receiving notifications from an app after a major software update—the token may have changed and the app needs to re-register with the notification system.

The information stored about your device is minimal from a privacy standpoint. Push platforms and app companies typically store only the device token, the app identifier, and your account information with the company. They don't necessarily have access to your location, contacts, or other sensitive data just because you've enabled notifications. However, individual apps may collect additional information based on other permissions you've granted them. You can revoke notification permission at any time through your device's settings without affecting the app's other functions.

Practical Takeaway: Permission management is a two-way process—you control whether apps can send notifications, and apps must ask before sending them. Your device generates a unique token that serves as the "address" for notifications, similar to a mailing address. You can change notification permissions anytime in your device settings without uninstalling the app, giving you ongoing control over which apps can contact you.

Different Types of Push Notifications and What Triggers Them

Push notifications come in several varieties, each triggered by different events or circumstances. Understanding these types helps explain why you receive notifications at different times and why they have different purposes. The most common type is event-triggered notifications, which are sent when something specific happens. For example, a social media app sends a notification when someone likes your post, a banking app sends one when a transaction occurs, or a delivery app sends one when your package is nearby. These notifications respond directly to user actions or system events.

Time-based notifications, also called scheduled notifications, are sent at specific times you've set or that companies have scheduled. Many news apps send notifications at 6 a.m. with morning headlines, or sports apps send notifications just before games start. A fitness app might send a reminder at 7 p.m. to complete your daily activity goal. Some scheduled notifications are triggered by user preference—you tell the app what time to notify you—while others are on a schedule the company has decided works well for their users. Research shows that time-based notifications, when sent at relevant times, have higher engagement rates than random notifications.

Location-based notifications are triggered when you enter or leave a specific geographic area. A retail store app might send you a notification when you're near one of their locations, offering a special promotion. A rideshare app sends a notification when the driver is a few blocks away. These notifications use your device's GPS data or nearby WiFi networks to determine location. You can usually control location-based notifications through separate location settings in your device, distinct from general notification permissions.

Another category includes behavioral notifications, which are triggered based on how you use the app or your patterns of inactivity. If you haven't opened a shopping app in two weeks, it might send you a notification about a sale to encourage you to return. A messaging
