Learn How Hertz Rent-to-Own Programs Work

What Hertz Rent-to-Own Programs Actually Are

Hertz, one of the world's largest car rental companies, operates a rent-to-own program that allows customers to rent vehicles with the option to purchase them later. This type of arrangement sits between traditional car rentals and vehicle financing. Instead of paying a standard daily or weekly rental rate, participants make regular payments that build toward ownership of the specific vehicle they're renting.

The basic structure works like this: a customer selects a vehicle from Hertz's fleet, enters into a rental agreement with purchase terms, and makes monthly or weekly payments. A portion of each payment goes toward the rental cost, while another portion builds equity toward buying the car. After a set period or once a certain amount has been paid, the customer can choose to complete the purchase, return the vehicle, or in some cases, walk away from the arrangement.

Hertz introduced and expanded rent-to-own offerings primarily to serve customers who may face barriers to traditional auto financing. This includes people rebuilding credit, those with limited down payment savings, or individuals who prefer flexibility in vehicle commitments. The program operates in select U.S. markets and may vary by location.

Unlike a typical lease, rent-to-own payments are credited toward purchase. Unlike traditional financing, the process typically involves less upfront documentation and may be more accessible to people with credit challenges. The vehicle remains Hertz property until the full purchase price is paid, similar to how a lender holds a lien on a financed vehicle.

Practical Takeaway: Understand that rent-to-own is a middle-ground option between renting and buying. Before exploring this option, research what your local Hertz locations offer, as programs and terms vary by region and may not be universally available.

How Payment Structures and Terms Work

Payment structures in Hertz rent-to-own programs differ from standard car loans or rentals. Typically, customers make weekly or monthly payments that are substantially higher than a regular rental rate but may be lower than a traditional auto loan payment for the same vehicle. The exact amount depends on several factors: the vehicle's value, the length of the agreement, the total purchase price, and any down payment made at signing.

Most rent-to-own agreements establish an end date or a payment target. For example, an agreement might state that after 24 months or 100 weekly payments, the customer owns the vehicle outright. Alternatively, some programs allow flexibility where the customer can complete the purchase once a certain threshold of payments has been reached, regardless of time elapsed.

Payment breakdowns typically work as follows: each payment is divided between rental costs and equity toward purchase. A $200 weekly payment might be split as $100 for the weekly rental and $100 toward purchase equity. This structure means that even if the customer returns the vehicle early, they've paid for the time they used it as a rental. If they continue to purchase completion, they own the vehicle.

Maintenance and insurance responsibilities vary by program. Some Hertz rent-to-own agreements include basic maintenance in the payment, while others require the customer to handle maintenance once a certain period has passed. Insurance is typically the customer's responsibility throughout the agreement, which differs from standard Hertz rentals where the company provides coverage. Customers should review their specific agreement to understand whether maintenance, registration, and inspection costs are included or separate.

Early buyout options are sometimes available, allowing customers to own the vehicle before the full term ends if they pay the remaining balance. Late payment penalties, similar to those in traditional financing, may apply if payments are missed. Some programs allow a grace period of a few days before penalties are assessed.

Practical Takeaway: Request a detailed payment schedule showing exactly how each payment breaks down and what the total cost will be at purchase. Confirm whether maintenance, insurance, taxes, and registration are your responsibility or included in payments.

Credit Requirements and Financial Considerations

One of the primary reasons Hertz offers rent-to-own programs is to serve customers who may not meet traditional auto loan requirements. However, "less restrictive" does not mean "no requirements." Most Hertz rent-to-own programs still conduct some form of credit and income verification, though the standards are often more flexible than those of traditional lenders.

Typical requirements include proof of income, a valid driver's license, and proof of residence. Income verification might come through recent pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements showing regular deposits. Some locations may require a minimum income level, though this is often lower than traditional financing thresholds. A valid driver's license demonstrates legal driving permission, and proof of residence confirms the customer's address for the rental agreement.

Credit history is examined, but the threshold for approval may be lower than traditional auto loans. Customers with poor credit, recent late payments, collections, or even bankruptcy may still be considered. However, individuals with extremely recent negative marks (such as a repossession within the past few months) may face denial. Each Hertz location has discretion in approval decisions.

The total cost of a rent-to-own agreement often exceeds the vehicle's market value. When you combine all weekly or monthly payments, down payments, and any additional fees, the final purchase price may be 20 to 40 percent higher than buying the same vehicle with cash or traditional financing. This is because the company assumes greater risk with less conventional credit checks and bears administrative costs.

Customers should compare the total rent-to-own cost against alternative options: purchasing a used vehicle outright, obtaining a loan from a credit union, or exploring other subprime auto lenders. Understanding the total financial commitment—not just the weekly payment—is crucial for making an informed decision.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate the total amount you'll pay from start to finish, including all payments, fees, and taxes. Compare this against buying a similar vehicle through traditional financing or cash purchase to understand the actual cost difference.

What Happens During the Rent-to-Own Period

Once an agreement is signed, the customer takes possession of the vehicle and begins making regular payments. During this period, the vehicle remains registered and titled in Hertz's name, though the customer has use and possession of it. This distinction is important because it affects insurance, maintenance decisions, and what happens if the vehicle is damaged.

Insurance is the customer's responsibility throughout the rent-to-own period. Unlike standard Hertz rentals where the company's fleet insurance covers damage, rent-to-own customers must carry their own comprehensive and collision coverage. This protects both the customer and Hertz's interest in the vehicle. If the customer fails to maintain insurance and the vehicle is damaged, they may be held liable for repairs.

Maintenance responsibilities typically transfer to the customer after an initial period (often 30 to 90 days). This includes oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, and other routine maintenance. Major mechanical failures may be handled differently depending on the agreement—some programs include coverage for major repairs up to a certain amount, while others place full responsibility on the customer. Customers should ask during the agreement process whether the vehicle is covered under any warranty and what happens if a major system fails.

Mileage may or may not be unlimited, depending on the specific agreement. Some rent-to-own programs include unlimited mileage, while others charge per-mile overage fees once a certain threshold is exceeded (for example, 10,000 miles per month). Customers should clarify this before agreeing, as unexpected mileage charges can add substantially to the total cost.

Vehicle condition is documented at the start through a damage inspection report. Any pre-existing damage is noted. The customer is responsible for preventing additional damage beyond normal wear and tear. Excessive damage, dents, stains, or mechanical neglect discovered when the car is returned or at purchase may result in charges that reduce the customer's equity or increase the purchase price.

Missing payments triggers consequences similar to a car loan. After a missed payment, the customer typically receives a notice and a grace period (often 10 days). If payment is not made during this period, additional fees accumulate and the customer's right to purchase the vehicle may be suspended. Multiple missed payments could result in repossession, where Hertz reclaims the vehicle and the customer loses all equity built through previous payments.

Practical Takeaway: Understand your maintenance obligations, insurance requirements, and mileage allowances before signing. Budget for insurance costs monthly, as this is an expense beyond the rent-to-own payment that many people overlook.
